WINNO'S WINNERS: DOOMBEN, SEPTEMBER 8, 2018

By Darren Winningham | Friday, September 7, 2018

Well we are back at Doomben again this weekend. With rain all week across South East Queensland it looks like we are stepping out onto a wet track.

The weather men are saying warm and fine conditions for the most part – however, they are having an each-way bet saying there will be storms in the afternoon.

The track is rated “SOFT” (Friday morning) and the rail will be true the entire course this weekend.

In WINNO NEWS this week.

The finals in the Rugby League and that other sport have started! I am hoping for a quick exit for the Broncos! I am hoping to see a Roosters V Storm Grand Final!

I should be cleared by the doctors to return to the track next weekend! I am hoping to get back into the swing of it.

The Canon cameras have been serviced, the computer has been cleared and unlike my beloved Bulldogs my clothes have been dry cleaned and ironed – yes punters I will turn up fully clothed at the track!

With the wet track and the wet weather in the past week – the fields have already been chopped about with many scratchings. I will try and keep it brief this week – just in case there are more runners removed from the fields.

NB: As this form assessment was made prior to race-day, please check final fields and track conditions for any changes on the day.

Race 1

A real tough way to start the day. Many of these runners are resuming.

I am going for the Robert Heathcote runner who is a Flying Start Syndications runner. They seemed to have formed a formidable relationship in recent times. This runner comes from Sydney and runs at Doomben for the first time. His two trials have looked impressive and Jimmy Orman jumps aboard – so let’s take a chance on Bold Chance (4)!

Phabeni (9) is trained by Terry McCarthy on the Northern Rivers of NSW. I thought his debut effort for the stable when beaten under a length at Grafton over their Carnival has him well placed here. Do not under estimate this runner.

Hi Fever (12) from the Brian Wakefield stables has strung three wins together and steps up to his first Saturday run. Winning form is good form – so I am putting him in as well.

Blue Seattle (14) ran a nice run at the Gold Coast first up. She steps up to 1050 metres this weekend. She has won second up. A genuine each way chance for mine.

Selections: 4-9-14-12

*************************************************************************************************

Race 2

A small field of eight here to face the starter.

Tawfiq Boy (5) for mine to continue in his winning ways after a dominant win at the Sunshine Coast. (Did I mention I tipped him that day?)

Martinelli (7) is trained by Chris Munce and has an excellent first up record with 4 wins from 5 starts. He loves to lead and put a space on them and has drawn well in barrier 1. He will be in a front for a long way here!

The Gollan Racing runner Prue’s Angel (8) seemed to race out of sorts last start at the Gold Coast – it may pay to overlook that run and forgive her. She has some solid form on soft tracks and will race well here.

Despite the large weight Mishani El Lobo (1) is well in here. The Les Kelly runner gets 3 kilograms off for Clayton Gallagher and his run at the Gold Coast first up was solid. He has a great second up record.

Selections: 5-7-8-1

*************************************************************************************************

Race 3

Here we go – the stayers race scheduled for the program. Who wants to win this weekend?

I am going for another Heathcote runner here, Ingeegoodbe (3), who was run down late last start at the Sunshine Coast. He drops back to 2000 metres here and has Taylor Marshall aboard. I think he is a good chance.

The top weight Montauk (1) was working home well when defeated here by Ingeegoodbe (3) a month ago after a terrific run in the Grafton Cup 2018. He looks the testing material – especially with Jeff Lloyd aboard.

Brilliant Jet (2) looks like he will run this weekend for the Aiden Nunn team from Tasmania. I am just worried if the track deteriorates any further he may struggle.

Prioritise (6) has won his past two starts for Steve Tregea. Last week at the Sunshine Coast he flashed home late under the urgings of Jackson Murphy to claim a solid win. He steps up to 2000 metres for the first time in his career. On the run last weekend, it would appear he will get the distance. I slight concern with this is his third run in consecutive weeks.

Selections: 3-1-6-2

***************************************************************************************************

Race 4

Short and sweet here.

The David Vandyke runner Asharani (3) just wins! Looks like another great chance for jockey Jeff Lloyd.

If you want to look beyond that I like the chances of the Gold Coast runner Mystic Mist (5), trained by Harold Norman and to be ridden by Rikki Palmer, to cause an upset – she may be the knock out runner at around $25.

Aileach (1) has a gear change with the addition of blinkers this start. This may see an improved effort.

Selections: 3-5-1-4

*************************************************************************************************

Race 5

Another Jeff Lloyd ride is my choice. Fuji Flyer (2) who made a big statement on debut at the Gold Coast when he won his maiden by 5 lengths over 900 metres. He is trained by the Gillian Heinrich and Ben Rodgers team. He looked the real deal. There is only a slight concern with him stepping up to 1200 metres here this weekend, however, prior to that run he had won two trials over 1000 metres impressively.

The topweight Defence Missile (1) is trained by Les Ross. He is proven over 1200 metres and has been racing in some higher-class races. If there are any chinks in the armour of the favourite he may be the testing material. The claim for Clayton Gallagher means he will only carry 56 kilograms and this could be a factor over the final 100 metres.

Outside of these two runners I am lost! You can make up your own minds!

Selections: 2-1-11-3

**************************************************************************************************

Race 6

The Q Scan Radiology Clinics Class 3 Plate – these guys are great for medical imaging – they really take good care of you! Speaking from personal experiences!

The Toby Edmonds runner From Within (13) ran well at the Sunshine Coast last start when she won over 1000 metres. I cannot see why she will not go on with it here this weekend with Jeff Lloyd jumping back on board.

The two Tony Gollan runners - Happy Hooves (1) and Il Riccio (8) - both have genuine claims here.

The runner that will probably test this favourite is the Chris Munce trained Johnny Whitesox (2) who is syndicated by the Hancox Bloodstock group. They give great opportunities to owners to get into racing for a small amount. This runner has a large following and support in Brisbane – they always turn up to the track and support this runner!

Selections: 13-2-1-8 rough chance 15

**************************************************************************************************

Race 7

The Open race on the program. As the title says – it is “open”!

Sold For Song (1) looks well placed. She always runs well fresh but, wow, she has got some weight here this weekend. She always needs a lot of luck in her runs as she likes to get back and then storm home.

Fiery Heights (3) won first up at Doomben and then was solid at the Sunshine Coast when defeated last weekend by Tversky last week. He has genuine claims.

Time To Torque (6) is fourth up this preparation – he must be due to show something.

Zumberlina (7) is trained at the Gold Coast by Chris Waller. I think that now she is third up we may see her show up. She likes the wet tracks and she does race well third up. I am gambling that this runner may be the one here that can get us off to a good start in the Treble.

In saying that any of the runners could step up and blow them all away at a big price!

Selections: 7-3-1-6

******************************************************************************************************

Race 8

Another No Metro Win race – AGHHH! Picking winners in these is like trying to win Lotto!

I think just put the field in – or put all four of my selections in!

Splitter (11) is trained by Tony Gollan and last start won midweek at Ipswich. Prior to that I thought her runs at Doomben were both very good. She is great odds here this weekend at $9. Something each way should see a nice collect here.

The stable mate is Capital Connection (4) who, in seven starts, has never been out of the money. He has run two seconds in his last two outings and he has shown that he loves damp tracks. Jim Byrne aboard this weekend – he will be in the finish.

Kris Lees has another runner debuting in Brisbane for his stable. Road To Heaven (14) is a lightly raced four year old who has won his past two starts in NSW. He normally races handy and I think he will find this field competitive but on his last win at Scone he gets in well here.

Steven O’Dea has Scallopini (8) in the race. He has a habit of getting back in the field and then running home. Maybe they will try and ride him forward this weekend from barrier 2. If this is the case he is another genuine chance. This runner has been scratched from race 9 in preference for this race!

Selections: 11-14-4-8

***************************************************************************************************

Race 9

The last race of the day over a mile. I hope you are in front come this race as this is a tough assignment!

I may as well put the mocks of Rob Heathcote again! I think Zofonic Dancer (8) gets in well here. First up he was solid at the Sunshine Coast. He has won second up and will like the sting out of the track - and he did run in some black type races throughout the Brisbane Winter racing Carnival. Dale Smith is in the saddle and he has been riding in dynamic form – at $7 I think he represents good value in this open field.

The topweight Gold Ambition (1) ran over 1800 metres at the Gold Coast last start and was run down late. I think the mile will be more to his liking and I expect a bold performance by this runner who has won here previously.

Looks Like Elvis (4) didn’t fire last week at the Sunshine Coast. I was worried about the 1400 metres and the weight. He steps back up to a mile and Jimmy Orman is back aboard. I would not be surprised with the genuine speed in this race this weekend if Jimmy peels him out 8 or 9 wide like he did at Grafton and let him balance up and come hard late. Will he catch them in time??? That is the question!

Natural Black (13) is back to Doomben on a damp track. This is a winning formula for this Liam Birchley runner. He will be in the placings!

Selections: 8-1-4-13
