WINNO'S WINNERS: SUNSHINE COAST, SEPT 22, 2018

By Darren Winningham | Friday, September 21, 2018

Sunshine Coast racing. The track is rated as “GOOD” and the weather is warm for the coming days.

The rail is in the true position this weekend. Looks like an even program at the Sunshine Coast while the action is certainly hotting up in Sydney and Melbourne with some good quality races scheduled each weekend now down south.

NB: As this form assessment was made prior to race-day, please check final fields and track conditions for any changes on the day.

Race 1

A small field to start the day.

Not a fan of the race. Throw a dart at the board and see what you come up with.

Pegapus (7) trained at Murwillumbah by Matthew Dunn was scratched from the Lismore Cup on Thursday for this race – maybe that is a lead?

Rob Heathcote has Pinch Passion (2) and Monaco Snob (4) going around. They both have been racing well. Monaco Snob (4) won here last start over the distance with Michael “Muppy” Hellyer aboard – I am placing him on top!

Selections: 4-7-2-6.

Race 2

Chris Munce and Jeff Lloyd combine here with last start winner Smartypy (6). She is only a lightly raced mare and she won well at Ipswich. I think she shows some promise and should cut the mustard and be competitive in Saturday grade.

Intrinsic (9) is a Kris Lees runner making her debut in Queensland. His strike rate has been great in recent months – you must respect this runner.

Selections: 6-9-1-7.

**************************************************************************************************

Race 3

From Within (9) is trained by the Toby Edmonds team who are flying now! This week they claimed the Lismore Cup on Thursday with Ryan Maloney doing the honours in the saddle. This runner has Jeff Lloyd aboard and is looking for a hat trick of wins.

Progression (13) is another Kris Lees runner. Her last run at Randwick midweek was better than it appears in the form guide – she may be some value and a knock out chance.

As for the rest take your pick!

Selections: 9-13-7-3.

****************************************************************************************************

Race 4

Chris Munce has another good chance here with Racecourse Road (5) who was solid first up from a spell when he ran second here over 1000 metres. Mark Du Plessis is in the saddle this weekend and, from barrier 4, he should race handy.

The Tony Gollan runner Shamurt (2) is resuming from a spell with Jim Byrne aboard. She raced in some good races over the Winter Carnival. The trial the other day was nothing too flash – however, she does race well fresh.

Les Ross trains Defence Missile (1) - the naughty colt that threw apprentice Sheriden Tomlinson off at the track a few months ago. Sheriden is going well by all accounts and should be back riding soon. This colt has been racing well and posted a solid win a fortnight ago at Doomben. He has won previously at this course. He will be in the finish.

Spending My Time (4) won here first up and, to be honest, was impressive. He may just continue on his winning ways!

Selections: 5-2-4-1 rough chance 10.

*****************************************************************************************************

Race 5

Not a race I can get excited about.

The topweight Dal Cielo (1) has got a massive 60.5 kilograms for some recent consistent performances but probably is the one to beat.

Hi I’m Back (2) is resuming here and was unlucky last preparation. He has won two recent barrier trials and lines up here for the first time in his career at the Sunshine Coast track. He may be the knock out chance at some decent odds.

Selections: 1-2-4-3.

****************************************************************************************************

Race 6

The first leg of the Quaddie and it is a lottery!

Capital Connection (6) was unlucky last start at Doomben. Forgive that run and I think we may see the best of him here this weekend.

Jack’s Bar (8) was impressive winning at Newcastle last start over 1200 metres. Kris Lees has shipped him north to grab some more Queensland Racing prizemoney. He looks the logical danger.

Divine Dice (2) was a solid effort behind Tawfiq Boy at Doomben a fortnight ago. He has an impressive record on this circuit and Tegan Harrison has been in great form in recent weeks – do not leave him out!

Selections: 6-8-2-5.

***************************************************************************************************

Race 7

The Open race over 1400 metres.

I tipped Zumbelina (3) last start when she saluted at Doomben after being well backed. I think she will be difficult to beat again here this weekend for the Chris Waller stables on the Gold Coast.

Apoloboom (7) had nothing go right for him in the run last start. As a matter of fact, I did back him at the $12 that was on offer and WINNO and Ben Currie stood and watched the race replay after the race to comfort each the other.

He has left Taylor Marshall on board this weekend and with the wide-open track here at the Sunshine Coast watch out if he backs up after his race last weekend!
Bel Burgess (8) won here three weeks ago after leading the entire way. There is a jockey change this weekend with Michael Murphy taking the reins. Michael Murphy has been in great form in recent meetings – he may just pull off an upset here.

Selections: 3-7-8-11.

*****************************************************************************************************

Race 8

Tough race this – not one I would be betting in with any confidence.

I have gone for the Tony Gollan trained, Jim Byrne to ride Dream Kisses (9). I think I have given a fair few chances this weekend to this renown Queensland combination! I may be in trouble but this four-year-old mare was solid when beaten by From Within (engaged Race 3 here today) last start at Doomben. That was only her second run this preparation. Third up and in this grade, she will be difficult to hold out!

Impasse (8) is another runner that has been sent from the Waller stables in Sydney to the Gold Coast. This gelding will appreciate the drop-in class and grade here. He is only a lightly raced Sepoy gelding and likes to race handy.

Impasse’s (8) stable mate is Cedarwood (6) who drew wide last start at Doomben and had no favours. He has drawn barrier 13 here this weekend, however, on this large track should be able to get in and get a trail in behind the speed. He also has a gear change with a tongue tie being applied for the first time. Maybe this will make him run a little more genuinely.

Selections: 9-8-6-4.

**************************************************************************************************

Race 9

This race is scheduled for 6.01pm with the Sunshine Coast lights blazing.

We race over the mile for the last race. Take note there are a few early scratchings.

Gold Ambition (8) was unlucky at Doomben last start. A massive weight, got too far back and had no luck in the straight. Forgive him that run and back on a track where he should be able to settle and flash home unobstructed out wide I think he may just get the chocolates for trainer Michael Costa and jockey Scott Galloway.

Zofonic Dancer (9) has never been out of a place here at the Sunshine Coast track with three starts for two wins and a second. This Robert Heathcote runner ticks a few boxes and is third up. I expect a bold run and improved effort on his last start performance.

Miss Miao (15) right down the bottom here won well last start over 1400 metres with Ryan Wiggins aboard. She gets in with 54 kilograms and I think the way she won this distance will suit her. She is a definite chance!

Selections: 8-9-15-6 rough chance 13

Jockey Challenge

Looks like it is a battle of the old heads! In the Maroon corner – Jim Byrne and in the South African corner Jeffrey Lloyd. A battle royal – I am going for Jeff just to pip Jim!
