WINNO'S KILCOY KASH: KILCOY, DECEMBER 1, 2018

By Darren Winningham | Thursday, November 29, 2018

This weekend the Kilcoy Race Club has its annual X-mas meeting. We are racing on Saturday 1 December with some spectacular weather forecast – so if you want to experience country racing close to the Brisbane and Sunshine Coast areas at its very best I would strongly suggest you get in your car and take the drive to Kilcoy!

The feature races are the Tattersall’s Racing Club Christmas Cup Pace – a horse pacing race on grass on the track proper – an amazing site that cannot be missed! Tattersalls are also sponsoring the Christmas Cup on the gallops program!

Then we have the Carlton United Brewery Great Northern Cannonball Series Final over 800 metres – where the gates open and the horses go flat out. This is another great sight to see and is the culmination of heats over the past month across Queensland.

The track is rated GOOD – the rail in the normal position and the weather is forecast to be great!

Just a reminder to grab one of the infamous Kilcoy Race Club steak burgers – this is the first win you will have once you get to the track!

The program has been proudly supported by:
Tattersall’s Racing Club
Carlton United Brewery
Kilcoy Global Foods
Somerset Regional Council
Butler McDermott Lawyers
Kilcoy Exchange Hotel
Kilcoy BP Driveway
Pump-it Environmental Services, and
Searles Garden Products

These sponsors should be acknowledged and congratulated for supporting Country Racing in Queensland!

Here we go …

NB: As this form assessment was made prior to race-day, please check final fields and track conditions for any changes on the day.

Race 1

We start the day with a small but competitive field of six runners - Sponsored by the Kilcoy Exchange Hotel.

I am with the Les Ross trained Holdin’ My Own (3) who is third up this weekend with Hannah English to ride. This Spirit of Boom filly has resumed in some tough races at Doomben and drops back to Class 2 and has drawn barrier 1. She has raced well when leading in the past and I think she should hold a forward position from the rails.

The Donald “Ducky” Baker runner Just Favulous (1) has had a month off and does love these shorter distances. “Ducky” loves to set his horses for a betting plunge here at Kilcoy and they always seem to produce. Gary Geran rides this runner and will be positive and race forward once the gates open.

Ben Currie trains Mishani Valentino (2) and his stables have been firing of late – 4 winners last weekend at Toowoomba. This runner is resuming, however, loves to race in the lead and will be competitive here with Nozi Tomizawa to ride.

Selections: 3-1-2-4

***************************************************************************************************

Race 2

A maiden race here over 1060 metres for the second on the program – sponsored by Pump-It Environmental Services. A very open race with a number of these runners facing the starter for the first time.

The Liam Birchley trained Club Soda (3), ridden by Beau Appo, has drawn well in barrier 7. He is third up this preparation and raced well first up prior to an average run at Beaudesert last start.

I am overlooking that run and I think he did not appreciate the track. He got too far back and found it hard to make up ground late. This weekend look for Beau to be positive and sit in behind the speed and make a move with 120 metres to go!

Phony Pony (5) is a debutant here for the Ben Ahrens stable and will be ridden by Matthew Gray. This gelding has been trialling well and has drawn barrier 1 which is always a help here at this tight turning track.

Cherie O’Neill has Pentaformance (9) who makes her debut here as well and ran well in a trial at Doomben last week. That trial form could see her be competitive here this weekend and she could be a nice chance with Bruce Powell aboard.

Selections: 3-9-5-11

**************************************************************************************************

Race 3 The Tattersall’s Racing Club Kilcoy Christmas Cup

General Assault (5, trained by Kim Loy, looks well placed here. He will race on the speed and I like to see runners lead in these distance races here.

Singaraja (1) has won here previously and has a superb record at the track and jockey Bek Williams has a good strike rate on this 11-year-old gelding.

As for the rest of them – I have no idea some of their recent form is average.

Selections: 5-1-3-4

***************************************************************************************************

Race 4 The Cannonball Series Final

The 2018 Great Northern Cannonball Series Final – blink you will miss it!

The Michael Nolan trained Redex (2) has been in sensational form winning his past two starts over these shorter distances. He has drawn awkwardly in barrier 8, however, I think with Fionnlagh (8) engaged from the Ben Currie stable who is likely to lead he may be able to sit off the speed and fly home.

Fionnlagh (8) has drawn well and will dominate in front. This could be the end of the race if he gets his own way on front and can scoot away. He looks a superior sprinter looking to stamp his impression on this race.

Wudang Blade (3) trained on the Gold Coast by Marcus Wilson can race forward and does love these shorter distances. Nathan Thomas has been riding winners of late and gets to guide this one around the tight Kilcoy track.

Then you have Zouzoukakia (5) who drew wide in this race last year and had no luck. She is owned by the Kilcoy Race Club Chairman and local bookmaker Con Searle. Maybe from barrier 1 and with Bek Williams aboard you should watch out for this runner. She may be ready to show her best here this weekend!

Selections: 7-2-5-3

***************************************************************************************************

Race 5

This race is very even as well … over 1500 metres and to be sponsored by Butler McDermott Lawyers!

Bacchur (3), trained by Joel Pengilly on the Gold Coast, looks like he is looking for 1500 metres and should race close to the lead for veteran jockey Cyril Small.

The danger is the Mick Lakey trained – Beau Appo ridden Abstain (4) who has run two placing here in two starts at the track! Maybe she can break the duck egg and snag a win. She is second up from a small let up and her run last week at the Sunshine Coast was very solid.

Pipemajor (7) won last weekend at Gympie for Jason “Hoops” Hoopert. He takes the ride here and may continue with that winning form.

Selections: 3-4-7-6

***************************************************************************************************

Race 6

The last race of the day over 1200 metres – sponsored by Kilcoy Global Foods.

Tapa (8) is trained by the young talented Sunshine Coast Billy Healey (he paid me $50 to say that punters).

He is a great trainer with some nice horses in his stables. He presents this mare after a 6-month spell. Her trial 3 weeks ago was not that impressive – however, it was in Open company. She has won twice from three starts first up and I would like to see those cerise and white horseshoe colours of the Healey Racing stable to salute in the last here.

Maybe I could get him up on my shoulder if he has lost some weight!

Grandioso (2) will be ridden by Gary Geran again here. They won here back in September and he will be the testing material again.

Doctor Zed (6) could be one to upset the punters and the favourites in the last race. If he gets any luck and can settle in behind the speed he may just be able to finish off over the top of them in the final 60 metres!

Selections: 8-2-6-10 rough chance 11

Jockey Challenge

Looks like an open field. It may come down to scratchings. With the early jockeys declared I think it may be a battle between the boys – Gary Geran, Nozi Tomizwa and Beau Appo. Maybe Beau and Gary could be hard to toss!
