WINNO'S WINNERS: DOOMBEN, MARCH 30, 2019

By Darren Winningham | Thursday, March 28, 2019

Doomben this weekend – a ten race program – a massive day of racing is scheduled …. I did say scheduled!

The track is rated “SOFT” (Thursday morning) and the rail will be out 1 metre for the entire course this weekend.

There is rain forecast for the rest of the week. Ex tropical cyclone Trevor is slowly making its way through the Central West and south towards Brisbane. It is a slow-moving rain depression (are you impressed) that will hand around for the next 48 hours. If the rain continues the track will surely be subject to a downgrade – will we even race?

With the track maybe rain affected and the meeting maybe in danger – I am going to extra brief this weekend.

NB: As this form assessment was made prior to race-day, please check final fields and track conditions for any changes on the day.

****************************************************************************************************

Race 1

I have gone to the bottom of the field here for my two selections – both resuming here first up, and both have won recent barrier trials in great style.

Ben Currie trains Bella Occhi (11) a lightly raced mare who has won on both soft and heavy tracks. She will race on the speed from barrier 2 and the recent barrier trial win at Toowoomba looked good.

Tony Gollan has Sundarbans (12) making her Queensland debut for the new stable. Her win in her trial at Doomben suggests that she is ready to throw down a challenge this weekend. She has no wet track form, however, she has drawn the rails in barrier 1.

Selections: 11-12-4-5

***************************************************************************************************

Race 2

A two-year old race on a wet track – maybe not a race to bet in!

You cannot go past the form and run of Miss Cavallo (2), from the Michael Nolan stables in Toowoomba, who ran a massive race in the Two-Year-Old Jewel on the Gold Coast a fortnight ago. Dale Smith remains aboard, and he was covered in mud after making a sustained run coming from the rear of the field on a heavy track.

I just am concerned that he will need some luck in this large field and may run into problems in the straight – that is not to say I do not respect this runner!

I found a runner that will probably race on the lead – Quart Pot (7) trained by Donald “Ducky” Baker. This runner trialled strongly before an impressive win at Kilcoy on debut. Emma Ljung remains aboard the filly. Sure I am gambling that she will handle the wet conditions – but she will be in front or near the lead for a long way!

Chris Munce and Ryan Wiggins combine with Buckets Of Pride (10) who is second up here. I remember this runner flying home on a heavy track here on debut. I think that she will be ready to fire this weekend.

Galaxy (3), $41 in some markets, is trained by Wendy Roche. This runner recently trialled on a bog heavy track at Warwick Farm and won well – do not overlook this runner.

Kris Lees has sent another runner to Brisbane this weekend – Magic Palace (5). Jeff Lloyd has been booked for her second career start. The markets opened her at $12 on Wednesday and she has been smashed into $6. The run on debut at Coffs Harbour was good. Despite laying out in the final 200 metres of that race still won impressively. Keep your eye on her markets with this runner.

Selections: 7-10-2-3 rough chance 5

***************************************************************************************************

Race 3

A small field over the mile here.

Kris Lees is represented here with Hallelujah Boy (7) who nearly won at Quality level at the Gold Coast on Jewel Day. In fact, the ride from Jimmy Orman was 11/10 and probably deserved to get the chocolates, however, was run down on the final stride by the impressive Mishani Vaidra on the heavy track. He has proven wet track form and looks well placed here this weekend.

Trommleschlagen (3) from the Rob Heathcote yards has good wet track form as well. I see they have gone with Michael Murphy to ride him this weekend – his claim may prove vital if the track is wet. He should race on the speed as well and create a genuine test.

Le Juge (4) is from the Waller stables at the Gold Coast. The gelding has had a month between runs and has no disclosed winning form on wet tracks but should fill a place.

Selections: 7-3-4-1

***************************************************************************************************

Race 4

This race is scheduled for 1.02pm and it is over 2200 metres. I am putting my feet up and having some lunch!

It is an open field anything can win this!

I liked the run of the Toby Edmonds runner - Seento (9) - at the Gold Coast a fortnight ago on a heavy track. He got too far back and stormed home out wide late to be beaten by around 2 lengths. Jag Guthmann-Chester is aboard again this weekend and he is riding in superb form. Riding a double each Saturday in the last two meetings. I think his claim and the extra distance will suit this runner - $10 is a good each way price.

Matthew Dunn trains Spanish Hurricane (10) another $10 chance in the race. He dropped back to 1700 metres at Grafton last start after posting a maiden win over 1900 metres the previous start at Ballina. He loves wet tracks and I would suggest the way he raced last time he will certainly run out this distance.

Chris Waller has Allcash (6) making his debut in Queensland. He is an 8-year-old – he is the early favourite – but he is not for me!

It is a tough race – I am not too confident.

Selections: 9-10-13-6 rough chances 3 & 7

*****************************************************************************************************

Race 5

An Open Class race.

Matthew Smith has sent Tonsor (9) north to Doomben looking for a win. He has won his last two starts on soft tracks and looks well in at the weights.

Impasse (7) ran a solid race last start when beaten by Tumbler by just 0.3 lengths. I see that he has some form on soft and heavy surfaces without winning. I am placing him on top here. Another good ride for Jeff Lloyd.

Courtza King (4) is a Gollan Racing runner who Ioves wet tracks and race well fresh. Do not leave him out of your exotics.

Selections: 7-9-4-5

***************************************************************************************************

Race 6

Pressway (9), trained by Steven O’Dea, steps up to 1350 metres this weekend after running over 1200 metres. He has solid heavy track form and I think is sensational odds at $14 in some markets. He is fourth up this start and he has raced all previous starts this preparation at Eagle Farm. I just don’t think he is a Farm horse – I reckon we will see the best of him this weekend back at Doomben where he has had two starts for a win and a second.

Deep Image (4) has had a month between runs. He has a good hit out in a barrier trial a fortnight ago on his home track at the Sunshine Coast. He is the pre post favourite and has won four times over this distance.

Secret Mo (5) is third up this weekend and he will handle wet conditions. He has never won third up, however has never been out of the money in four starts (2 seconds and thirds).

Selections: 9-4-5-7

*****************************************************************************************************

Race 7

The Ben Currie runner Soxagon (9) is on a short 7 day back up after racing last weekend. He ran home solidly there after being slightly inconvenienced at the 200 metres. I think stepping up to 1350 metres this weekend he will be better suited and should be flashing home late.

Toby Edmonds trains Millard Reaction (9) who won impressively in his first career start midweek here over 1110 metres. He was green and shifted out but was too good for the opposition on that occasion. Jag Guthmann-Chester retains the ride and is looking for a 100% winning record on the gelding.

The Tax Accountant (1) ran in the 3-Year-Old Jewel at Eagle Farm last weekend and was a solid third in the race over 1200 metres. He flashed home late and if the run last weekend hasn’t taken too much out of him should be a nice chance here for apprentice Baylee Nothdurft.

Selections: 6-9-1-10 rough chance 8 & 13

*****************************************************************************************************

Race 8

This is an open race. I went for one down in the weights and up in class.

Kelly Schweida has had some recent luck. His runner Prince Of Tie (13) is drawn in barrier 13 as well. Some people like this methodology (No. 13 – Draw 13) in finding a winner!

He is resuming from a short 6 week let up and is only a lightly raced six-year-old gelding with 19 career starts. He won last time out midweek at Doomben and since that win won a barrier trial on Tuesday this week. He looked good winning that trial. He is drawn awkwardly, however, I think he may be able to get across and settle in behind the speed.

I Am Impinge (9) was unlucky first up here over 1350 metres three weeks ago. He has won on soft tracks previously and I think he looks good value.

Brains (2) has been racing consistently and rates a mention in this field.

The Les Ross Racing trained River Racer (4) loves wet tracks and gets back to Doomben this weekend where I think he performs at his best. Jag Guthmann-Chester is in the saddle and his claim will assist the chances of this runner.

Selections: 13-9-4-2

***************************************************************************************************

Race 9

A No Metro Win on a wet track – this will be another lottery!

The Chris Meagher runners have both been well supported here and look well placed in this grade. Cymbalism (7) has drawn well in barrier 3 and will be ridden by Ronnie Stewart. She won here midweek a month ago and does race well on wet tracks.

The stable mate is Mialign (13) having her first Queensland start for the new stable. She won a trial this week on Tuesday and looked very forward in the trial win. Tegan Harrison rode her in the trial and retains the ride this weekend. She opened at $12 and has firmed into $6 – the stable usually are successful when they unload on a runner!

Gypsy Toff (6) has drawn wide for Paul Butterworth Racing. She will need some luck from out there but does race well fresh.

Selections: 7-6-13-8 rough chances 1

**************************************************************************************************

Race 10

If we make it to the last race, I will be looking forward to getting home and resting up after ten races!

We finish with a No Metro Win for the boys!

Steven O’Dea won the last race at Eagle Farm last weekend – can he do it again this weekend with Totally Charmed (10) with Matthew McGillivray in the saddle? This runner is second up and he was solid first up when beaten narrowly by Crusher.

Cabeirian (2) loves wet tracks. He won last start 2 weeks ago at the Gold Coast on a heavy track with Jag Guthmann-Chester in the saddle. He is strapped by “Gold Coast’s number one strapper” – Luke Milligean. Can Luke bring his special touch to Doomben this weekend to see this runner win back to back? I will be watching closely!

Buck Bay (13) won first up for his new stable – Edmonds Racing on the Gold Coast. He has drawn woefully this weekend in barrier 18 and will need some luck from out there.

Mail Escort (17) likes wet tracks and has drawn well in barrier 6 for trainer Tony Sears. I would not be surprised to see this runner flash home late and make the finish interesting!

Selections: 10-2-17-13 rough chance 4 & 21

***************************************************************************************************

Looks like a one-way street this weekend for Jeff Lloyd.

FLEMO v WINNO

FLEMO claimed a good win last weekend at Eagle Farm – I just could not find a winner. I hope we can find some winners here on this challenging program. Remember to check out our last-minute tips and preview on Facebook on Saturday morning after the track and final scratchings have been sorted out!

Good luck and good punting!
