WINNO'S WINNERS: DOOMBEN, JULY 6, 2019

By Darren Winningham | Friday, July 5, 2019

DOOMBEN RACES – SATURDAY 6 JULY 2019

Doomben this weekend with the track rated “SOFT” and the rail is out 1 metre for the entire course. With showers forecast we may be racing on a worse surface than the current soft rating.

We are now only a week away from Jeff Lloyd retiring from the saddle. I am hoping that his final day at Doomben on July 13 will be a day we can celebrate the wonderful career of a jockey who has accomplished so much, not only in Queensland, but internationally.

I must give a shout out to a good NSW mate and very underrated jockey Michael “Muppy” Hellyer who won his first Group race last weekend in the Group 3 Sunshine Coast Guineas aboard the David Vandyke trained Baccarat Baby. It was awesome to see trainer and jockey celebrate as they did after the race. I even managed to get a photo in the Courier Mail with the shot!

Wimbledon has started this week. I was enjoying the tennis until the Australian super brat appeared and put on one of his infamous court tantrums. His behaviour is disgraceful, and I fail to see what it achieves other than it detracts from the sport and the tennis that is being played. I am sure that there are others who feel that he brings a new exciting element and new dimension to the game – well I don’t – and that is my thoughts for the week!

With the Carnival over we have a nine-race program this weekend – let’s hook in and find some winners!

NB: As this form assessment was made prior to race-day, please check final fields and track conditions for any changes on the day

**************************************************************************************************

Race 1

Only a small field here to start the program.

The Kelly Schweida trained Shogun Sun (1) was scratched last weekend at the Sunshine Coast. He loves wet tracks and despite the massive weight the claim for Corey Bayliss will assist him in this race. The small field probably permits him to be ridden wherever he likes as well.

Toby Edmonds has Awake The Stars (5) going around with Glen Boss. She has been racing well and probably looks the danger.

Jason Coyle has sent Valentino Rossa (2) north this weekend looking for a victory. Ronnie Stewart is in the saddle and his recent runs in Sydney suggest that he will be competitive here.

Selections: 1-5-2-4

**************************************************************************************************

Race 2

Matthew Dunn has the promising and short priced favourite Snazz ‘N’ Charm going around this weekend after a nice run in the Listed Winning Edge last start at Eagle Farm. He was held up in that race and, while he probably would not have won the race, he may have challenged the winner. Robbie Fradd retains the ride this week.

Darryl Hansen brings Gobsmacked (6) to town after a strong performance when debuting at Rockhampton. That run was only over 1050 metres but the way she hit the line shows she has some talent.

Magic Trick (3), trained by Tony Sears, may have to pull out some magic this weekend. I thought that the Ipswich track may have been against him last start – look for an improved effort this weekend.

Selections: 1-6-3-4

**************************************************************************************************

Race 3

Another small field over 2000 metres. These races are just lotteries!

Ilwendo (10) is a NSW raider trained by Matthew Smith who has a good hit rate when he brings a runner to Brisbane. The runner is third up this weekend and he is undefeated each time third up with a 2 from 2 record. Matthew McGillivray is in the saddle and he comes off some solid form last weekend at the Sunshine Coast riding the last two winners including the Glasshouse Handicap for Les Ross.

Heathcote and Anderson Racing have the topweight Our Mantra (1) looking for a hat trick of wins this week after two strong efforts in recent starts. He will be competitive again despite the large weight – however, if the track is heavy, he may struggle.

John Symons and Sheila Laxon have two runners in the race. Mewstone Rock (6) went around last weekend on the heavy track at the Sunshine Coast and worked home well late – probably not suited by the extra heavy track and maybe she is looking for the 2000 metres of this race. Jackson Murphy retains the ride and his claim will be a bonus.

The stable mate is Bronzegate (9) who is around $41 presently. He is third up this weekend and has some solid form on wet tracks – he may be one at some odds for your exotics!

Selections: 10-1-6-9

**************************************************************************************************

Race 4

The Open sprint for the program.

Amanaat (1) was sensational last start in the Group 3 WJ Healy over 1200 metres. He goes up in weight, but trainer Mark Currie has opted to put Corey Bayliss aboard and utilise the claim for the apprentice who is riding well.

Whypeeo (3) has had some support since the markets opened. He likes to lead, and last start faded in Group 3 company. Back to a Class 6 race he looks well placed for the Edmonds Racing stables.

The other two I like are Handsome Thief (2) and Divine Dice (4) both trained by John & Chris Meagher.

Handsome Thief (2) looked disappointing last start in the Moreton Cup (Group 2). Since then he smashed it in a barrier trial. Back in grade this weekend and at $12 he could be the one to jump on here if the other two are prohibitive odds.

His stable mate is Divine Dice (4) has been racing consistently and comes off a recent barrier trial as well.

Selections: 1-3-2-4

***************************************************************************************************

Race 5

A class 3 race here for the fillies and mares – our day just got more challenging!

I like the Tony Gollan trained Bubbles ‘N’ Troubles (11) coming off a solid trial win a fortnight ago after what I thought was a credible run in the Group 3 Moreton Stakes in her previous start. Drops back in grade dramatically and has Jim Byrne in the saddle. He may as well get a win on the board on her as he won’t have must joy when NSW smash QLD next Wednesday night!

Jami Lady (13) is trained by Steven O’Dea and she has been knocking on the door to win a race in recent weeks and gets her chance this weekend. There has been some solid support for her firming from $2.70 to $2.30 since the markets have opened. She is drawn well this weekend and Ronnie Stewart stays aboard.

Churning (12) is another Toby Edmonds runner. She has been racing consistently as well. I am just not too sure how she will handle a heavy track if the rain comes and the track gets downgraded. She is a genuine chance on soft going though!

Selections: 11-13-12-15

**************************************************************************************************

Race 6

The first leg of the Quaddie and it is another Class 3 race!

Looks like a race between All Important (1), first up from the Gollan Racing stables, and New Horizons from the John and Chris Meagher yards.

All Important (1) looked lack lustre in his recent trial but he has done this before and come out and won impressively first up. Jim Byrne is in the saddle.

New Horizons (4) has raced well previously in this grade and has been freshened since his last start – Tegan Harrison is in the saddle.

Liam Birchley has a runner first up here that could cause an upset – Say I See You (11). This runner thrives on wet tracks and has had the benefit of a recent trial. Keep your eye on this one.

Selections: 4-1-11-7

****************************************************************************************************

Race 7

A one metro win race. You can tell we are not racing Carnival time now.

Looks like another solid chance for Gollan and Byrne with Tokoriki Lad (7) who has been racing in higher class races and gets his chance to post a win this weekend in the restricted grade.

Madam Shazam (6) resumes from a 35-week spell for a new stable and she has been trialling well. She does love wet tracks as well and may just sprint well fresh.

Matt Kropp trains Marksfield (4) who raced very well in the Battle of the Bush Final a fortnight ago. He could show up at some odds.

Selections: 7-4-6-8

***************************************************************************************************

Race 8

Ef Troop (2) has been racing without much luck being run down in his past two starts over 1200 metres. Tony Gollan has elected to drop him back to 1110 metres this weekend – maybe this gives him a chance to get into the winners stall again. He gets in very well with Baylee Nothdurft’s claim. He is drawn a little wide but should bounce out and lead this field. There are a few others that may put some pressure on him and when this happens he sometimes can get worried out of the race.

With that in mind I am looking to Jason Taylor who doesn’t get too many chances in town to ride a winner for Gold Coast trainer Mel Eggleston – Ditmas (7) who stormed home last start over 1000 metres at Eagle Farm. The extra distance this weekend would suggest that he may benefit from some solid speed in front and sit back and wait for his chance to strike late.

Jake Bayliss – another QLD supporter who had plenty to say last weekend at the Sunshine Coast -rides Ahwahneechee (5) for Alyssa Ross & Troy Sweeney who could be one to improve second up on a wet track. He has raced well in the past well second up.

Hirtshals (6) was well backed last start from $20 into $10 when he won at Eagle Farm. Despite going up in grade he looks well placed by Brian Smith again this weekend with the claim for apprentice Corey Bayliss.

Maybe it can be the battle of the BAYLISS boys in the final 100 metres of this race!

Selections: 7-2-5-6

*****************************************************************************************************

Race 9

A massive field of three-year old’s in the last race.
This race could all depend on what race Churning (4) starts in as she is a dual acceptor (race 5 as well).

The other chances here are the Mick Lakey trained Enterprise Louise (5) who ran home well at massive odds last start to finish second behind the smart Vega One. She will need some luck in this large field this weekend.

Plumaro (3) is trained by Kevin Kemp who had a winner last weekend at the Sunshine Coast with jockey Luke Tarrant. They combine again here with this runner who has been out of sorts after resuming with a nice win first up. This weekend he has taken the blinkers off and put the winkers on again. Maybe this will enhance his chances.

Spending My Time (11) resumed at Toowoomba with a very good win on his home track three weeks ago for Paul Nolan and may be a solid chance at odds to salute.

A tough race to finish off the day for punters.

Selections: 4-3-5-11

***************************************************************************************************

Jockey’s Challenge

We have a close contest this weekend – with Jim Byrne – Corey Bayliss and Matthew McGillivray. Maybe a win to the “old guy” – Jim Byrne!

1,3,6 / 1,6,10 / 1,2,3 / 11,12,13 - cost is $81 to $1

Quaddie (races 6 to 9)

Value Quaddie (races 6 to 9)

1,11 / 4,7 / 2,7 / 3,4,5 - cost is $24 to $1

Treble (races 6 to 9)

4,6,7,8 / 2,5,6,7 / 3,4,5,11 - cost is $64 to $1

WINNO V FLEMO

FLEMO won last weekend – well done mate! Shame your hopeless Broncos kept their miserable NRL season going with another poor result. Just like the result next Wednesday when NSW bash QLD! How good – I will be in NSW heartland at Grafton reporting live from that Carnival with the NSW comrades as well when the game is played! Be sure to check the up to date and amended tips each Saturday morning on Facebook after any track changes of scratchings!
