WINNO GOES TO DARWIN - THE 2019 EDITION

By Darren Winningham | Tuesday, July 30, 2019

When HRO’s Darren Winningham covers a racing carnival he produces a coverage package … including detailed previews and a quite outstanding range of photographs … that few can match. With the Grafton Carnival now successfully behind him, Winno has set his sights to the far north. His next stop is the major race-days of the Darwin Cup Carnival this coming Saturday and Monday. Here Winno warms up for a hot weekend.

The winter mornings in Brisbane are too much to take and the eight-minute showers with hot water to wake up and get warm are costing me too much.

A little bird has told me the weather is warm in Darwin. With that in mind I have packed the bags – fired up the cameras and will be heading on the QANTAS big bird to Darwin for the 2019 Darwin Cup Carnival.

The Carnival of Colour in previous years has transformed to “one winner – one destination.” They keep coming up with these wonderful slogans and themes that create the foundation of the racing Carnival.

This weekend I will be on track bringing you all the live information from the BET 365 Palmerston Sprint on Saturday. Then on Monday the last race of the day is the pinnacle of the Carnival the 2019 Great Northern Darwin Cup.

Will we see history repeated in 2019? Remember last year when the Palmerston Sprint and Darwin Cup double been completed by the same trainer and jockey combination – the first time since 2004.

I have been keeping my eye on the recent races up north for the past few weeks and my early tip for the Cup – one week in advance – is the Michael Hickmott trained Lieder who finished a gallant second in the Cup last year with Jamie Kah in the saddle.

Well that is it from me for now. I’ll see you all in Darwin at the end of the week … and for those who can’t get there, my hope is that my copy and photographs that will be posted on HRO in the coming week will help whet your appetite so that you can plan your trip for next year.
