WINNO'S WINNERS: EAGLE FARM, AUGUST 17, 2019

By Darren Winningham | Thursday, August 15, 2019

Eagle Farm this weekend with the track rated “GOOD” and the rail is in the true position for the entire course.

I was up watching the news late on Tuesday night and was drawn to live reports from Hong Kong International Airport where protestors had stormed the terminal and were combative with police and authorities.

It is not the wonderful and safe Hong Kong that I have visited on multiples occasions – it saddens to me to see the violence and the attacks on innocent people and property. I hope that the authorities can resolve these issues soon before any further damage is done to the Hong Kong image.

The Hong Kong racing season is due to resume in a few weeks. Blake Shinn amongst other international jockeys will be making their appearance in the new season – we wish Blake all the best. He obviously faces some tough opposition from Zac Purton and Joao Moreira – but I am sure he will rise to the occasion and compete well once he gets settled in and creates some solid networks.

The Anderson – Heathcote Racing franchise keeps rolling along – three winners on EKKA Day at Doomben – they are really starting to hit their straps.

How good is the King of The Coalfields – veteran jockey Robert Thompson who won his third consecutive Cairns Cup and his sixth win in the race overall. For a jockey based in NSW he comes to these Northern Queensland Carnivals each year and takes home a swag of feature races!

Lastly, I’m not one for political statements – but the recent spate of alleged dog baits being placed in parks around Brisbane is disturbing. I hope they catch the person/s responsible soon. Until then keep your pets and dogs close to your side!

Well nine races for decision – it is time for my preview.

NB: As this form assessment was made prior to race-day, please check final fields and track conditions for any changes on the day

**************************************************************************************************

Race 1

A small field to start the day off the day with the three-year old’s.

Stuart Kendrick seems to hold the key here with his two runners – Star Of Michelin (1) and Don’t Waiver (3).

Tony Sears runners – Miss Silky (4) and Red Bloom (7) also look nicely placed. Looks a race with little interest for me here.

Selections: 1-3-4-7

**************************************************************************************************

Race 2

A distance race here with a small field.

Ilwendo (2) made his presence felt and was dominant here seven weeks ago at Doomben. He then returned to Sydney and stepped up to 2400 metres in Rosehill. I think he may have been just one run short then and running over 2200 metres this weekend should see him and jockey Matthew McGillivray return to the winner’s stalls.

Ocean Addict (5) got too far back last start here a fortnight ago when he was really not suited to the muddling speed – overlook the run and look for an improved effort this week.

Selections: 2-5-3-4

**************************************************************************************************

Race 3

A restricted race over 1200 metres greets us here. Not a race I can get into.

Macewen (9) is from the Gollan Racing stables. It is worth noting that the stable won four races last week and was unlucky not to win a fifth. I think he has this runner primed to fly second up here this weekend. He finished off the race nicely last start and he has won second up previously. Brad Stewart is back from suspension and will be eager to be back riding winners.

Ditmas (1) was caught wide last start – just unlucky from the barrier – maybe he can improve this weekend with apprentice Jackson Murphy in the saddle.

I must make a special mention of Under The Thumb – clearly named after Josh Fleming – trained by a wonderful lady Sue Grills. I hope she brings one of her sons to strap it!

Selections: 9-7-1-12 rough chance 11

***************************************************************************************************

Race 4

A class 6 race here – some nice horses going around as well. A competitive race – 8 runners now with early scratchings.

Hold The Line (9) resumed with a solid win here three weeks ago. She is trained by David Vandyke who won two races on EKKA Day at Doomben – his stable seems to be firing. Robbie Fradd remains aboard.

New Horizons (6) ran on the same day as Hold The Line (9) and despite running second in a different race he did run a faster time and looked like he has some improvement in him. Tegan Harrison has elected to ride this runner over Epic Girl (8) who she won on last weekend.

Epic Girl (8) is a Anderson-Heathcote Racing runner on the quick back up after a solid win last weekend at Doomben. On that day she was well supported late and got the race and conditions to suit.

Tisani Magic (3) has been racing very well for trainer Kevin Kemp and he has elected to put the new apprentice on the Brisbane scene aboard – Nick Keal, who rode a winning metropolitan Saturday double last weekend – his first one! This runner always races well in this class. I would be more confident if the track was wet.

Selections: 9-6-8-3 rough chance 4

**************************************************************************************************

Race 5

One of these Class 3 lotteries that seem to greet us each week now.

Say I Cee You (3) from Birchley Racing win last start at the Sunshine Coast and gets a chance to post consecutive wins.

Desleigh Forster trains Red Chase (12) who drops back in class and distance this weekend. He struggled to get the 1840 metres last start and back to 1400 metres he is a solid contender. He has been well supported in the early markets as well, so the smart money is already on!

Six Sigma (4) won first up – just held on on that occasion. He goes up in weight, however Tony Gollan has put Baylee Nothdurft aboard so his claim will come in handy.

Dubai Tycoon (6) is a dual acceptor and they have elected to run him here this weekend.

Selections: 3-12-4-6 rough chance 10

**************************************************************************************************

Race 6

The first leg of the Quaddie this weekend – anything can win this race.

Gollan Racing has Capital Connection (5) resuming here after a recent barrier trial win. He won two consecutive starts last preparation at Eagle Farm and looks well placed to post a win first up.

Matthew Dunn Racing has Lifesaver (12) who is down in weights and will be strip fitter now he is third up this preparation. Overlook the last run here when he copped some interference at the start and really was put out of the race. At around $10 he is a great knock out chance.

Crusher (9) looked like he needed the run first up at Doomben a fortnight ago. He faded out to finish last – he is another great chance to cause an upset.

Whypeeo (1) may get back to his old winning form but has a massive weight to carry.

Selections: 5-12-9-10 rough chance 1

*************************************************************************************************

Race 7

A BM 80 over the mile – a large field as well.

A massive weight for Looks Like Elvis (1) but the three kilograms allowance for Nick Keal will assist. He was very unlucky in the Coffs Harbour Cup when he just was not suited by the short straight and the way the race was run. He stormed home late only to run out of time to run down the leader in that race. He won his previous start here at Eagle Farm and he will be suited by the tempo of the race and the long straight this weekend.

Trevelyan (13) comes off a striking win here last start over a month ago. He normally races well with his runs spaced and he did have a solid barrier trial on Tuesday this week – just to get him ready for this weekend.

Savwell (4) is trained by David Vandyke and comes back to Eagle Farm after a circuit in North Queensland where he raced very consistently without winning. He looks well placed here.

King’s Full (5), trained by Kacy Fogden was sent out favourite in his first up effort at Doomben and looked underdone on that day. He then came out and won his next start at the Sunshine Coast in great fashion.
Michael Hellyer retains the ride and at $11 he looks a nice each way chance.

There are some rough chances in the race as well. See The Master (8) and Granny Red Shoes (9) both who should be better for their recent race efforts.

Tony Gollan has a $31 chance here that looks like he could cause a major upset – Perfect Witness (12). He has done well previously second up and this distance will suit. Keep your eye on the markets here for this one and I think he is one to follow as he steps up in distance this campaign.

Selections: 1-13-5-4 rough chances 8,9 & 12

**************************************************************************************************

Race 8

Auerbach (8) comes off an exciting win last start for the Chris Waller team based at the Gold Coast – that was a fortnight ago. In that race he defeated stable mate The Avenger who won last weekend at Rosehill so maybe that form has been franked.

Manaya (3) won here over the course and distance last start and looks the obvious danger. This weekend Robbie Fradd takes the ride.

Sword of Justice (5) is second up this weekend for Mark Currie from Toowoomba. The 7seven-year-old gelding has raced well second up previously and he looked like he ran out of condition lasts start when he resumed at Doomben over 1200 metres. The step up in distance will assist him as well.

Kubis (6) from the Anderson-Heathcote Racing team can race well fresh and is a massive price at $31 – could be the one to cause a major upset and send punters to the bar to drown their sorrows!

Selections: 8-3-5-11 rough chance 6

**************************************************************************************************

Race 9

A tough way to end the day – a Class 3 race – a massive field – DANGER – DANGER.

Our Girl Silke (4) is second up this weekend for Kelly Schweida Racing. She got back last start at Doomben and flashed home over 1200 metres. Stepping up to the longer distance of 1400 metres and the larger and wider track I think she will be very competitive at $16.

Seentomany (6) is a Michael Costa runner is coming back in distance this start – maybe that will assist her chances.

Sienna Ross (7) is stepping up in distance again. The Steven O’Dea runner will get the chance to finally break through this preparation after being placed in all three runs since resuming. Apprentice Stephanie Thornton – who I may add is better looking and more intelligent than Boris - takes the ride and will claim 2 kilograms.

Bubbles Ball (1) is a Kris Lees Racing runner sneaking into Queensland looking for a win. This is her fifth run this preparation and may improve here.

Barry Lockwood trains Erringhi Spring (12) who is $41 and third up this preparation. She has won previously third up and I think at a massive price she may show up here in a difficult race.

Selections: 4-6-7-12 rough chances 1,3,10 & 14

*************************************************************************************************
