WINNO'S WINNERS: DOOMBEN, SEPTEMBER 14, 2019

By Darren Winningham | Thursday, September 12, 2019

DOOMBEN RACES – SATURDAY 14 SEPTEMBER 2019

Doomben this weekend with the track rated “SOFT” and the rail is 0.5 metres out for the entire course. With warm weather forecast for the rest of the weekend and very hot conditions on Saturday I would expect we will be racing on a GOOD surface at some stage on race day.

I see the Birdsville Cup was run and won last weekend – whilst I have never made it out there to experience the Carnival it looked amazing on TV. Great calling as well by Josh Fleming over the two days!

Well nine races for decision – it is time for my preview.

NB: As this form assessment was made prior to race-day, please check final fields and track conditions for any changes on the day

***************************************************************************************************

Race 1

A small field to start the day over 2000 metres.

I think Tegan Harrison being back aboard Boom Boom Epic (3) for Anderson & Heathcote Racing is a great sign for this mare this weekend. The drop back in distance as well should see Boom Boom Epic very competitive in this opening race.

The Waller pair Cormac (4) and Lord Gododdin (7) are not without a chance either.

Galtero (5), from Gollan Racing, drops in weight and has Baylee Nothdurft back aboard this weekend. I think in this small field he will get the run of the race behind the likely leader Boom Boom Epic (3) and may finish over the top of her late. There has been some early support in the early markets for this runner.

Selections: 3-5-7-4

**************************************************************************************************

Race 2

La Pulga (6) is looking to post a hat trick of wins here for Gold Coast trainer Michael Costa. His stable mate Seentoomany (7) is not without a chance as well in this open field.

Ponytales (4) was unlucky last start at the Gold Coast when caught wide and never fired a bullet. I would not be surprised to see a form reversal this weekend - drawn a better barrier and should be able to settle mid field and make her run late.

Highway (8) is her stable mate from Gollan Racing. I liked this runner last start at Eagle Farm but just looked like she needed that run. She has a disappointing record here at Doomben with zero placings from three starts here. Maybe this weekend over the mile we will see the best of her.

Ready For Danger (1) ran a gallant second in the recent Murwillumbah Cup and is not without a chance.

Selections: 6-4-8-1 rough chances 7 & 11

*************************************************************************************************

Race 3

Smug Satisfaction (6) won last weekend and is on the seven day back up. Looks well placed again here. Robbie Fradd remains in the saddle.

AeeCee Tong De (1) won a fortnight ago at Eagle Farm in great style for Desleigh Forster. She goes up in grade and weight for this assignment – but they smarties still must think she is above this lot as they have heavily supported her into $3.70 from $6 since the markets have opened.

Francisca (9) is trained by Steven O’Dea and will be ridden by Stephanie Thornton. These two have been lethal in recent weeks forming a formidable team and winning several races. This mare will appreciate the drop in weight from her last start and should appreciate getting back to Doomben where she goes well.

Yeahnah (10) is a rough chance from the Liam Birchley stables.

Selections: 6-1-9-10 rough chance 2

**************************************************************************************************

Race 4

A class 3 race. There appears to be a few leaders here – so the speed will be on!

Macewen (4) was unlucky last start. He was held up and hampered in the straight. I think third up here this weekend he will be ready to fire. He should get a wonderful run in behind the speed and Jim Byrne should be able to come late and find the winning port first.

Brian Smith trains Full Nelson (8) and jockey Andrew Spinks makes a rare appearance in town on a weekend. At the massive odds of $20 this runner is a definite knock out chance. He will relish the genuine tempo in the race and will be finishing off the race strongly.

The Fire Trap (6) resumes here. He has had two trials recently and races well fresh.

Fuji Flyer (1) is looking to win three in a row – personally I think he struggles at 1200 metres.

Selections: 4-8-6-1

**************************************************************************************************

Race 5

Meet Mr Taylor (3), from the Kelly Schweida Racing stables, has been smashed in the markets. He always looks good over these short distances, but he is in Open company this weekend.

I am going against him (probably at my own peril) and staying with the recent Eagle Farm winner Single Bullet (1) from the Gary Portelli stables. I think with the speed in the race this runner will sit in behind the leaders and finish off fast.

Capital Connection (6) is second up and races well second up. He was caught wide first up and that affected his chances to finish off strongly as he normally does – respect him here.

Selections: 1-3-6-7

*************************************************************************************************

Race 6

I like a roughie here to open the Quaddie at around $20 – Drumadoir (3) trained by Lorraine Erhart. She was great first up at Eagle Farm when she ran in the race won by Veranes (15) who she meets again this week.

Gollan Racing has Shalwa (13) resuming here from a spell. Jim Byrne is in the saddle and she comes off two impressive recent trial wins. She is the favourite and deserves this tag with her runs in the previous preparation before Jeff Lloyd came off her prior to going for a spell.

David Vandyke trains Frangipani Moon (9) who resumed winning here before racing well at Eagle Farm last start in the race won by Veranes (15). I think she is a Doomben horse and will be right in this race.

Selections: 3-13-15-9 rough chance 6

**************************************************************************************************

Race 7

The three-year-old’s go around here and The Odyssey (1) resumes for Kelly Schweida. We have not seen him in 26 weeks since he won the Jewel on the Gold Coast on a heavy track. He has a recent barrier trail that probably was better than it appears on paper. They have gone for the claim this weekend with the large weight and have put Corey Bayliss on him.

Garibalbi (2) trained by Tony Gollan and Gem of Scotland (3) trained by Rex Lipp both come out of the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival.

Gem of Scotland (3) I think will be the one to beat here this weekend as she will settle and storm home late with the speed in the race. Jimmy Orman stays aboard her. He has won on her three times already.

The roughie here must be the Stuart Kendrick trained Written With Ease (6) who has had a short 13 week break and has won a recent barrier trial. Down in the weights this weekend she is good each way value.

This is a great race – if there is a leader bias this weekend it may well pay to stay with The Odyssey!

Selections: 3-2-1-6

***************************************************************************************************

Race 8

Trommelschlagen (7) had a torrid run at Kilcoy last start. He missed the start and was checked in the running. I am going to forgive that run and back him here this weekend with Stephanie Thornton aboard for the Anderson Heathcote Racing team. Her claim gets him in well for this race and he races well second up and loves Doomben. If you forgive the run at Kilcoy – the $20 on offer is wonderful odds for this runner.

Enterprise Prince (10) has won his past two starts for trainer Mick Lakey. He has got this Rothesay stallion firing this preparation. He has drawn barrier 1 which will give Mark Du Plessis many options to get a good run here and get him home.

The topweight is Auerbach (1) who was unlucky last start at Eagle Farm. He has won here previously and gets in well.

Langhro (4) led all the way at the Gold Coast when he dominated the tempo of the race – I am not too sure he will get it all him own way this weekend.

Foxy Affair (12) is another outside chance from the Anderson & Heathcote Racing stable.

Selections: 7-10-1-4 rough chance 12

**************************************************************************************************

Race 9

We have made it to the last race! This is a tough race to end the day.

Order Again (1) resumes here after a great Winter Carnival. I just think he goes better at Eagle Farm so I am giving him a miss this weekend.

Manaya (5) resumes after a month off for Michael Costa. She ran a great trial on the Gold Coast this week when beaten by Tyzone. That could be a pretty good pointer for this race.

The Avenger (6) won well a fortnight ago and will be testing material.

Bold Endeavour (12) really never got into the race on the Gold Coast three weeks ago. Back to Doomben and 1350 metres – he could be the roughie that makes the bookies cheer at $31 if he can win the race.

Sword of Justice (7) for Mark Currie is racing very consistently and could show up here.

Selections: 5-6-12-1 rough chance 7

**************************************************************************************************
