WINNO'S WINNERS: DOOMBEN, DECEMBER 7, 2019

By Darren Winningham | Thursday, December 5, 2019

DOOMBEN RACES – SATURDAY 7 DECEMBER 2019

Doomben this weekend with the track rated “GOOD” and the rail is 1 metre out the entire course … with hot weather forecast for the rest of the weekend and very hot conditions on Saturday.

The last few meetings have seen leaders or runners on the pace being successful – I think with the rail out so far this weekend that pattern of racing will continue.

As I am in Hong Kong for the LONGINES International Races, with my focus on the pinnacle of racing in Honkers, I will be very brief this weekend.

NB: As this form assessment was made prior to race-day, please check final fields and track conditions for any changes on the day

Race 1

The two-year-old runners start the program today. Will there be “destruction” in the first race with this nice Spirit of Boom colt from the Tony Gollan stable. Jake Bayliss is in the saddle and looks nicely placed.

2 – Mass Destruction
1 – Way Beyond
3 – Bangers and Mayo
5 – Lady Lancaster

Race 2

Another small field. Kelly Schweida Racing has a nice one here in Cellarmaid. I think that she is on a mission to Magic Millions 2020 in January. Jimmy Orman on board – I think this is the way to go.

5 – Cellarmaid
3 – Scout
7 – Rothenburg
2 – Ziemba

Race 3

Some of these are getting over this distance for the first time. Maybe best to watch this race. I have little interest.

2 – Southern Swing
1 – Don’t Waiver
3 – Mosshiki
5 – Tears Of Love

Race 4

Another open race over some distance with a large field. Chris Anderson Racing has a couple of nice runners here in Dixie Preacher (4) and Equipped (8).

Dixie Preacher (4) was sensationally backed last start and got the chocolates – Ryan Wiggins remains in the saddle for this run. Equipped (8) won exceptionally well last start at the Gold Coast and may just step up to weekend grade. Another nice ride for Jimmy Orman. Maybe a quinella for the Anderson team here.

Tony Gollan won with Advance Warning (1) last start at the Sunshine Coast. It is great to see apprentice Nick Keal back in the saddle this weekend after a small break away from racing – he is a fine talent and hopefully can go ahead and start making his mark in racing in Brisbane.

4 – Dixie Preacher
8 – Equipped
1 – Advance Warning
3 – Red Stina

Race 5

Tough race this. Stuart Kendrick trains Winter Passage (12) - looks to be well placed – Matthew McGillivray to ride.

The Trent and Toby Edmonds runner, Astro Boy Toy (12), makes his Saturday debut in town after a solid win at the Gold Coast last start.

12 – Winter Passage
13 – Astro Boy Toy
4 – Doctor Zous
8 – Stylish Saga

Race 6

All Important (9) won here last start. He is a brute of a horse and gave Jake Bayliss a torrid time in the straight. However, in saying this he knuckled down and won in good fashion. The pair reunite here this weekend and should be hard to beat again.

Snitch (1) was sensational last weekend in his efforts in the Listed Recognition Stakes and he drops back in grade this weekend. Tony Gollan has enlisted Nick Keal’s three-kilogram allowance to offset the large weight.

Lucky Prospector is the roughie here for the Meagher Racing team – will be ridden by Ronnie Stewart. This runner is third up this weekend. He has won two times from three starts third up and I think he is ready to show something.

9 – All Important
1 - Snitch
13 – Lucky Prospector
12 – Park Chinois

Race 7 Bribie (Listed)

There is some serious speed in this race. Last start I think Spirit’s Choice (7) was ridden too fast in front. This weekend with some other speedsters engaged maybe Matthew McGillivray may elect to take a sit and fly home.

Charlotte White has her sprinter Spurcraft (4) resuming here this weekend. He will be ready to come out here and slay his opposition this weekend. Bubba Tilley is aboard again this weekend and has an impressive seven wins aboard this gelding.

Whypeeo (5) is a genuine chance here as well first up from a spell. He normally races well fresh and his recent win in a barrier trial on the Gold Coast was full of merit. Goldfinch (9) is trained in Sydney by Stephen Engelbrecht and has won here previously – Deanne Panya makes the trip to Queensland to ride him again.

7 – Spirit’s Choice
4 – Spurcraft
5 – Whypeeo
9 – Goldfinch
Rough chance 1

Race 8 Brisbane Handicap– Listed

The feature race this weekend. I like Kubis (1) to win the race for Robert Heathcote. This runner is tough with a capital “T”. He just never stops trying and coming back from 2000 metres last start to the mile and with Dale Smith to ride I like this runner to lead and hopefully get away with some cheap sectionals in front and then dig deep to hold off the runners flashing home!

The Candy Man (1) was amazing winning last start – he had the race set up for him on that day. I am just concerned that he may need some luck in the straight this weekend.

Nicoletta (4) comes off a great effort in THE GONG at Kembla Grange. In a blanket finish he was only beaten by 4 lengths. Combine that with his chequered run in the straight he looks well placed here. Another opportunity for jockey Andrew Mallyon to win a feature race in Brisbane.

9 – Kubis
1 – The Candy Man
4 – Nicoletta
11 – Prioritise

Race 9

The last race is upon us. Another Chris Anderson runner – Epic Girl (5) looks like she is well in here. She is undefeated second up and I think will be very hard to beat with Matthew McGillivray to ride.

Jadentom (2) played up at the gates prior to her last run – she then looked the winner in the straight and was swamped late as the other runners stormed past her. She is drawn well this weekend and will look the winner again at some stage in the straight.

Snow Valley (9) is second up. She raced well first up and I think she will benefit from that run. Watch for a marked improvement this weekend.

5 – Epic Girl
2 – Jadentom
9 – Snow Valley
4 – Skate To Paris
Rough chance 11
