JOHN MOORE IS ON THE GOLD COAST TURF CLUB'S RADAR

By Graham Potter | Monday, December 9, 2019

HRO’s Darren Winningham’s conversation with John Moore in Hong Kong during the Hong Kong International Races week in which the champion trainer spoke about the Gold Coast precinct being one of his future training options when he ends his career in Hong Kong at the end of the current Hong Kong season would have sparked the interest of many racing enthusiasts in Queensland. HRO’s Graham Potter went in search of a response from the club in question. He spoke to both the Gold Coast Turf Club CEO and its Racing Manager. This is their feedback.

Steve Lines – CEO, Gold Coast Turf Club:

“We have been talking to John Moore. There has been some engagement between John and the Club and we would obviously be are delighted to have someone of that calibre consider joining us.

“It would be quite a coup for Queensland, certainly, if John Moore were to come here. From what I have been told he is an absolute champion bloke … and for us to have someone like that on board with his achievements and ideas and thoughts of what he would like to do moving forward would be fantastic.

“We are a very progressive business. We are up and coming and a John Moore move to the Gold Coast fits in beautifully with the direction we are going.

“Part of the long-term plan is for the Gold Coast to become a second metropolitan track … a second metropolitan club, if you like … in Queensland. That’s committed by Racing Queensland.

“Last Friday our submission went in for the tunnel, the lights, the A course, course proper, B Grass and the poly surface all weather.

“We don’t want to get ahead of ourselves but in two years’ time we think we’ll be turning the lights on and having a good time and it would be lovely to have Mr Moore with us.”

Ian Brown – Racing Manager, Gold Coast Turf Club:

“Obviously, everybody is aware that John Moore will be finishing up in Hong Kong at the end of their season.

“He has been a champion trainer there for a number of years and I think any club worth its salt will be interested in having John train out of their premises.

“The Gold Coast Turf Club did reach out, in the first instance, to Gary Moore about a month ago. We asked him whether he or John would be interested in training at the Gold Coast.

“There was a positive response … so we then reached out to John.

“John said he would be here in January during Magic Millions time and he said he’d love to catch up and have that conversation then around some of the upgrades that we have got going on here at the Gold Coast Turf Club, and also what we might be able to do for him as far as stabling goes.

“It will obviously be fantastic for Queensland in general and the Gold Coast in particular if we can John to settle here.

“Who wouldn’t want to live but the Gold Coast?

“We’ll be trying to convince John of that in January and we look forward to that conversation.”
