MY CALL: FARNAN'S DYNAMIC TRACK GALLOP AND HIS FAVOURABLE DRAW SEALS THE DEAL FOR ME

By David Fowler | Tuesday, January 7, 2020

David Fowler is the principal thoroughbred caller for Radio TAB. David, who is a keen form student and punter, has enjoyed a lifetime involvement in the racing media. His personal blog, ‘My Call’, appears exclusively on HRO.

Farnan is an outstanding eachway gamble in this Saturday’s $2 million The Star Gold Coast Magic Millions Two-Year-Old Classic.

This morning’s draw of five (4 with the emergencies out) is totally ideal for a horse who is very quick out of the barriers.

With Kavak (1) a 1200m risk, a moderate beginner in Aim (2) and Gotta Kiss (3) likely to be ridden with a sit, there’s every chance Farnan will jump in front.

How good is Farnan? Is there untapped talent that hasn’t been exposed in his two wins at Canberra and Wyong.

I definitely think there is based on two factors.

Firstly, his track gallop between races at Aquis Park Gold Coast on Saturday was dynamic.

He never deviated from the inside rail and his last 400 metres of 20.86 and his last 200 metres of 10.65 were figures rarely bettered.

But the striking part of the gallop was the hold Brenton Avdulla had on him as they headed to the post.

Secondly, the stable showed their hand when outlining the reason not to give him a third race start because they consider him “autumn potential”.

This clearly indicates Saturday is not his “Grand Final”.

He has displayed identical characteristics in his two victories.

He “pings” the barrier stalls and then exhibits natural speed. Both times, he has settled sensibly outside the leader.

He takes between 50m and 100m to hit his straps and then puts a gap on them.

It was the track gallop that was the “game changer” for me in my analysis and the barrier draw today sealed the deal.

While confident, you have to be sensible enough to appreciate there are several others who can stake a claim for victory.

Principally, Aim and Kings Legacy appeal as the hardest to beat but Conceited and Gotta Kiss have chances as well.
