SCST OCT 04 - BRIGADOON CHAMP OUTGUNS ZAMAN

By Graham Potter | Monday, October 5, 2009

Sunshine Coast, October 4, 2009.
Track - Good 3. Rail - out 4m.
Maiden Handicap - 1600m. Time: 1-40.15.
1 Brigadoon Champ; 2 Zaman; 3 Saffir Simpson.

Brigadoon Champ gave trainer Bruce Hill the first of his three winners on the day.

The lightly raced four-year-old, who had been unplaced in his four previous starts, showed fair improvement in his second start for his new stable to score a fighting win when holding out the well-fancied Zaman by short-half-head.

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Bruce Hill: “It’s only the horse’s second run for me actually. Nice staying horse ... no champion. He’ll win a race or two over ground. He went good the other day in town and he improved a lot going into this. The other day at Doomben he was a little bit one-paced. Today he actually picked up and sprinted to the line which was good.”

“Yeah, it was a good ride. He (jockey Paul Hammersley) is just a quiet achiever who just does the right thing.”

Jockey Paul Hammersley: “He was just travelling a bit too good. He sort of got on their heels a bit and I had to wait for a run. Once he got it he sprinted good to the line.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Brigadoon Champ): 4.40 out to 4.60.
Favourite (Zaman): 1.80 out to 2.00. Finished second.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Check The Chips (M. Hellyer) began awkwardly and shifted in, making heavy contact with Rosy Road Home (A. Pattillo). Interest (J. Wood) was tightened for room shortly after the start between Brubeck (C. Reith) and Zaman (L. Cassidy), which began awkwardly and shifted in.

First Lieutenant (J. Byrne) commenced to over-race leaving the 1400m and continued to do so for some distance. Near the 1200m, Zaman (L. Cassidy) had to be steadied from the heels of First Lieutenant (J. Byrne), which was over-racing and had a tendency to shift out.

Passing the 900m, First Lieutenant had to be steadied from the heels of Zaman, which shifted in. L. Cassidy, rider of Zaman, was reprimanded and advised to afford his fellow riders the required room when shifting ground.

Frozen Time (J. Kropp), which had commenced to over-race, hung out rounding the first turn and continued to over-race for some distance. Rounding the home turn, Rosy Road Home (A. Pattillo) improved on to the heels of Brigadoon Champ (P. Hammersley) and had to be steadied. Saffir Simpson (K. Pope) raced wide throughout.

When questioned regarding the disappointing performance of First Lieutenant, J. Byrne explained that the horse over-raced in the early stages and when asked for an effort in the home straight, the filly failed to respond to his riding. Trainer J. McLachlan agreed the filly was disappointing and advised that although the filly had pulled up well, he now intended to spell First Lieutenant.
