WINNO'S WINNERS: DOOMBEN, 18 APRIL, 2020

By Darren Winningham | Thursday, April 16, 2020

DOOMBEN RACES – SATURDAY 18 APRIL 2020

Doomben races this weekend with the track rated “GOOD”. The weather is forecast to be very warm leading into the weekend with 32 degrees forecast for Friday. The rail will be out 7 metres – this sometimes can lend a track bias to leaders. It may pay to watch the first few races and see if this eventuates.

With the photography restrictions still in place at the race track I would like to thank you all for you calls and messages asking why we are not at the track and why our vast range of photographs are not available. It is beyond our control and we are totally compliant with the current restrictions in place for the safety of all participants in the industry.

I hope you all had a wonderful Easter. I managed to get to see my parents. My niece (Ashlee) gave birth to an amazing bundle of joy – her first baby daughter named “Zarli”. It is an understatement to say that WINNO is a proud grand uncle (apparently this is what google says I am!)

Happy to take some other advice on this!

Then next Thursday 23 April will be my beagle “BUSTER’s” 11th birthday. I am hoping to get him to the beach and then his annual pampering at POOCH AVENUE. So, he will be a happy and spoilt beagle next week!

Other than that, the only other news from the other side of the fence is:

My opinion – I cannot see how the NRL can recommence their 2020 season. With restrictions in place for weddings, funerals and then social distancing and unnecessary travel restrictions on the everyday punter and family unit – what makes them so special?

Look I get the fact that it will bring some joy back to the community and die-hard sports fans – but seriously there are restrictions in place to save Australians – do they think they are above this?

I will leave it for there this week – but feel free to share your thoughts with past-times that you might have found anew in these extraordinary times. I would happy to hear them!

Time to look at the program for this weekend at Doomben. This is not a program with great depth.

NB: As these selections were made prior to race-day, please check track conditions and scratchings for any changes on the day
______________________________________________________________________

Race 1

A maiden race to start the day – stay indoors – do not open your wallets – observe social savings policy!

Monster of Power (6), trained by Brian Smith and to be ridden again here by Larry Cassidy, got home well last start. Fourth up into this preparation I hope that he can break his maiden status here.

City Smart (5) is a Heathcote Racing runner who has a mind of his own in some of his runs. He is fourth up as well this weekend and has drawn well. He also has the added addition of a rider who will stand over this gelding and keep his mind on the job – Jake Bayliss.

Selections:

6 – Monster of Power
5 – City Smart
10 – Mishani Heart
4 – Toucan Sam

Race 2

Populist (4) saluted here last weekend and looked strong towards the end of the race. Despite the quick back up and the longer distance this weekend I think he will take the natural progression. Corey Bayliss stays aboard.

The run of Quality Seeker (1) last start was very out of sorts – look for him to bounce back this weekend after a fortnight to get over that dismal performance.

Selections:

4 – Populist
1 – Quality Seeker
3 – Brocson
2 – Boom Boom Epic
Rough chance – (10) Gala Rain

Race 3

A two-year-old race.

Tumbler Ridge (1) was wonderful winning last start here for trainer Steven O’Dea. He races handy and should be suited by some speed in the race. He has a massive impost of 61.5 kilograms and O’Dea has gone for apprentice Justin Huxtable to ride and take 2 kilograms off this weight.

Broken Hero (2) backs up after a solid effort last weekend behind Minjee. He is co-owned by Sky Racing’s Michael Maxworthy. I am sure Maxy will be cheering over the final 100 metres as this one fights on late to see if he could knock off the topweight.

Selections:

1 – Tumbler Ridge
2– Broken Hero
3 – Mishani Epic
6– Starosa

Race 4

Another maiden over 1350 metres here with a short-priced favourite in the Gollan Racing trained Angus The Black (2). I think that the runner will get rolled and there are some long-priced chances that could cause an upset here.

Barry Lockwood has two runners who have genuine chances – Baronet (3) and Isabellas Spring (12).

Baronet (3) will race handy on the speed and probably trail the speedy Leo The Lion (7). Sean Cormack will be handling Baronet (3) who is around the $16 mark and should be hard to beat second up here.

Isabellas Spring (12), Lockwood’s other runner, has her second career run here. She looks a nice type who will appreciate the step up in distance. With the speed engaged here look for her to power home late.

I Am A Rocker (11) will be ridden by Luke Tarrant for Bryan Dais. Last start she was drawn wide and had to be used up early and took up a leading position. I am not certain if she liked this style of racing. She is third up this weekend – look for her to be ridden back in the field and come home late.

Selections:

3 – Baronet
2 – Angus The Black
11 – I Am A Rocker
12 – Isabellas Spring
Rough chance – (6)

Race 5

Gollan Racing and Baylee Nothdurft combine here with Get Stuck In (2) who led and won in his past two starts. He was not pressured in either of those runs and dominated the race tempo. I cannot see the tactics altering this weekend and expect him to post a hat trick of wins.

I can only see one challenger Magnufighter (3) who was well beaten last start by Get Stuck In (2). Despite the weights swinging in favour of this runner this weekend – I cannot see the result being reversed.

Selections:

2 – Get Stuck In
3 – Magnufighter
4 – Sabkhat
7 – Plitvice

Race 6

The first leg of the Quaddie.

Niedorp (14) was magnificent winning first up here last start. A fortnight between runs, this filly has always shown some brilliance on the racetrack. She has drawn woefully in barrier 20 this weekend and Baylee Nothdurft will need to be at his best and ride her for luck to see her win again. She is a short-priced favourite at around $1.85. I do think if she gets pratted wide, she is vulnerable.

The stable mate is Garibaldi (12). I think he is another one with plenty of ability but he has been placed in some testing races. Back to a restricted grade race this weekend and drawn well with Anthony Allen in the saddle he could show a sharp improvement.

Soubrette (11) was sent out as a short-priced favourite in a midweek meeting here. She has won at this track – I think she could be hardest to beat.

Trevello (6) is a Chris Munce Racing runner who races on the speed. He is third up this weekend and has the opportunity to continue with his winning ways.

Selections:

14 – Niedorp
11 – Soubrette
6 – Trevello
10 – I Am Venus
Rough chances – (12) Garibaldi

Race 7

Another race which Gollan Racing looks to have a mortgage on.

His two runners Sugar Boom (2) and The Move (7) are both serious chances here.

Sugar Boom (2) resumes here and has won two solid trials leading up to this run – Stephanie Thornton takes the ride. This will lead and be exceedingly difficult to beat … but …

I am tipping the stable mate The Move (7) who will be better over this shorter distance of 1110 metres. He was run down late last start after hitting the front. I expect it to be a battle royal in the final 120 metres of the race with two talented apprentices going at it head to head – Stephanie V Baylee. Who will reign supreme on this occasion?

Selections:

7 – The Move
2 – Sugar Boom
5 – Bold Style
8 – Emmas Jet

Race 8

You could nearly tip another Gollan Racing runner to win this race – that would give him a massive day at Doomben. He has a live chance here with Solar Star (8) and it could be a topical tip as the forecast is for 32 degrees – warm, hot and the sun shining down on a beautiful Queensland autumn day. He has had a month between runs and will be ready to show his best here … but I just think he is a better proposition across the road at Eagle Farm.

Racecourse Road (10), from Chris Munce Racing, could spoil the Gollan party here. This gelding has not had much luck either at Doomben though with no placings in four starts. This weekend, with the rail out and him likely to lead with Jimmy Orman in the saddle and not be challenged, he could get away with some cheap sectionals in front and prove too good for this lot.

Starvirgo (11) comes back in grade this weekend, is third up and should be ready to fire. His effort a fortnight ago was solid when beaten by Macewen here over the same distance.

Selections:

10 – Racecourse Road
8 – Solar Star
11 – Starvirgo
2 – Gypsy Toff

Race 9

The last race of the day!

We have again Gollan Racing V Munce Racing in this last race. Granted that Gollan has three runners to Munce’s solo runner.

Scathing (10) is the Munce Racing runner who resumed with an impressive win at the Sunshine Coast and is the current early favourite at around $3.50. Look, there was nothing wrong with the effort and the win, I just think despite some good efforts here at Doomben he may struggle this weekend against some more seasoned runners.

In saying that Light Up The Room (3) and Amicitia (8) are amongst the Gollan Racing representatives.

I am going for Light Up the Room (3) at $8 with Lani Fancourt in the saddle. Her run first up was rather good and she would have derived a fair bit of fitness from that effort. I think stepping up to 1350 metres second up will suit her.

Amicitia (8) is the stablemate who won last start at a midweek race coming from back in the field and powering to the line. Anthony Allen takes the ride this weekend and this lightly raced mare could be good enough to be able to continue with that winning form.

Now here is the scenario – Lani and Anthony are partners! I would hate to be Anthony if he beats her in the final stride – the dog house is where he may be sleeping on Saturday night. Then again, the always happy and smiling Lani will probably just make him pay for dinner and forgive and forget!

Selections:

3 – Light Up The Room
8 – Amicitia
10 – Scathing
13 – Dancing Angel
Rough chances – (9) Lashoni, (11) Erringhi Spring

Looks like a solid book of rides for the apprentice Baylee Nothdurft – with any luck he should win easily.

WINNO V FLEMO

WINNO beat FLEMO last weekend in our tipping competition. Jointly, we had a great day tipping seven winners between us on the nine-race program – I think that is a new record for us. Some winners were in excess of $5 so we were on FIRE! Be sure to check the up to date and amended tips each Saturday morning on Facebook after any track changes and final scratchings!
