WINNO'S WINNERS: MORPHETTVILLE, MAY 16, 2020

By Darren Winningham | Friday, May 15, 2020

MORPHETVILLE RACES – SATURDAY 16 MAY 2020

Morphettville races this weekend with the track rated “GOOD”. The rail is out 8 metres from the 1200 metres to the winning post and then 5 metres the remainder of the course. I just hope that it does not play into the leaders getting out in front and skipping away! The day features the Group 1 Goodwood Handicap.

Time to look at the feature day of racing in South Australia.

Race 8 Group 1 GOODWOOD

The time-honoured GOODWOOD Handicap over 1200 metres at Group 1 level.

I think the three-year-old fillies have exceptional chances in this year’s race.

I liked the effort of Lyre (11) in the Group 1 TAB Classic. She stormed home and I thought she was going to run down the leader. She went down narrowly. I just hope that she does not give them that much of a lead this weekend. She is trained by Anthony Freedman and this weekend he has put his faith in the South Australian apprentice Zac Spain – he has been riding in confident form over the Carnival. I think given some cover early and being able to peel out wide in the straight, she will take a power of beating!

Xilong (11) is trained by Tony & Calvin McEvoy and has drawn well in barrier 1. She is at great odds at $21. Paul Gatt to ride this one. She won the Group 2 Euclase last start a fortnight ago. She will run a solid 1200 metres. I think that she is a definite contender here as she runs out a solid 1400 metres and I think you need to be strong going to the line in this race each year and she fits that bill!

Godolphin’s James Cummings is well represented with the 2019 Stradbroke winner Trekking (2). He goes well third up and if the track is not rain affected look for him to be incredibly competitive.

The early favourite is Gytrash (3), trained by Gordon Richards, who has been in a purple patch of form with his stable firing now. Jason “Stubby” Holder has the ride and will be looking for a Group 1 winner. He is second up and was amazing winning over 1100 metres at Group 3 level when he raced away to win easily. He was very impressive in March at Group 1 level in Melbourne without winning over 1200 metres. I just wonder whether the 1200 metres may test him here this weekend.

It would be well advised to play wide here. If the favourite Gytrash (3) doesn’t run in the first four the exotics could pay a motza!

Selections:

11 – Lyre
12 – Xilong
2 – Trekking
3 – Gytrash
Rough chance – (7) The Inevitable, (9) Behemoth

Race 9

Okay I am speculating here – TAKE NOTE.

I think the two emergencies are the way to get home with plenty in the last race – Array of Sunshine (18) and Lakhani Rose (17). Both have solid form for a race like this – they could show up at massive odds.

I have done two lots of selections in case the emergencies do not make the field.

Selections: (if the emergencies make the field)

18 – Array of Sunshine
17 – Lakhani Rose
5 – Street Icon
10 – Too Good Too Hard
Rough chances – (11) Be My Star (13) Bayou

Selections: (if the emergencies don’t make the field)

5 – Street Icon
10 – Too Good Too Hard
11 – Be My Star
13 - Bayou
Rough chances – (2) Humma Humma (4) Mystery Love
