WINNO'S WINNERS: DOOMBEN, 20 JUNE, 2020

By Darren Winningham | Friday, June 19, 2020

DOOMBEN RACES – SATURDAY 20 JUNE 2020

Doomben races this weekend with the track rated “SOFT”.The weather is supposed to be raining for the next two days. That probably means a downgrade in the track to probably a “HEAVY” surface. With that in mind I will have little confidence betting at the meeting if we get into that heavy range.

The rail is out 2.5 metres for the entire circuit.

I’ll keep it brief.

NB: As these selections were made prior to race-day please check for any changes to track conditions and for any scratchings on the day

Race 1

A small field.

Looks like the Tony Gollan and Baylee Nothdurft band-wagon will continue to roll here with the promising Howwonderfullifeis (5). She is a lightly raced mare who has solid form on wet tracks. Last start she was superb running a gallant fourth to Aquitaine at Listed level. She drops back to a Class 3 race and looks a good way to start off the day.

As for the placings take your pick!

Selections:

5 – Howwonderfullifeis
4 – Moonan Joyce
3 – Magnolia Power
1 – Sanglier

Race 2

Another tiny field – 7 runners.

David Vandyke has Hold The Line (3) engaged. The mare has been racing in higher grades without much luck. She gets into this race well. If she can handle the wet surface and Jake Bayliss can keep her in touch with the leaders as the come into the straight, she will be winning this race.

Sofie’s Gold Class (2) is first up after a 12-week spell. She won a recent trial on a soft track and did it easy. She is the likely contender to knock off the favourite here.

Selections:

3 – Hold The Line
2 – Sofies Gold Class
4 – Prince Of Tie
5 – Yeahnah

Race 3

Looks like a battle between Chris Waller Racing and Tony Gollan Racing. Normally Waller has the numbers with the runners in these distance races however, this this time Gollan has two runners and Waller only the one.

Ironically, I have gone for Stardome (5) trained by Waller Racing. He was impressive winning last start at Eagle Farm over 2200 metres. Luke Dittman was at his best on the occasion and retains the ride here this weekend.

The Gollan Racing pair of Galtero (4) and Advance Warning (2) both have genuine chances. Advance Warning (2) has the best wet track form out of them and has Nothdurft aboard so should be suited by the track conditions and the longer distance.

Selections:

5 – Stardome
2 – Advance Warning
4 – Galtero
6 – Picka Plum

Race 4

This race is over the 1615 metres.

Steven O’Dea Racing has been in solid form in recent weeks so I will stay with his runner Reckless Choice (4) who is third up here and back to a distance where he has won five times. Boris Thornton remains in the saddle this weekend. I think that he can win this race if the track is not a bog.

The Kingdom (5) – not sure what happened last start at Eagle Farm – maybe it was the second up blues. I will forgive that run and hope to see him back to his genuine form. Apprentice Adin Thompson’s 2-kilogram claim will help him out this weekend.

Mangione (9) won two weeks ago over 1815 metres at Eagle Farm. Sure, he drops back in distance but if the track is rain affected he will not be disadvantaged by the challenging track conditions.

The Milk Man (7) is the favourite AGAIN. There is no cream here for me – I cannot see him finishing in the top 3 here this weekend!

Selections:

4 – Reckless Choice
5 – The Kingdom
9 – Mangione
10 – Prometheus
Rough chance – (7) Milk Man

Race 5

The Listed Phoenix – one of the feature races on the program.

It is a tough race for punters with only four of the ten runners having had a career win under their belt before fronting up here in this race. Can a maiden runner win this race?

I like the Paul Messara (NSW) trained runner. Messara has brought Outburst (3) north to Queensland looking for some black type in this race. Brad Stewart has been booked to ride – how good has his form and tactics been in recent weeks? He has been riding in career best form. This runner was impressive at his home track last start at Scone over 1400 metres. The more I watch the replay the more I think he will appreciate the extra distance this weekend.

Chris Munce Racing has a maiden runner in the field – Kefalonia (5) with stable apprentice Justin Huxtable aboard. He is having his second career start here. He led in his only start and I think just peaked on his run late and was run down. He will strip better for that effort and should get the mile easily in this race.

Toscanini (6) is a Ciaron Maher Racing maiden making his debut here with Robbie Fradd in the saddle. Just keep this runner safe as Maher’s runners always seem to perform better on the Doomben track. He has an exceptionally good strike rate here.

The Actuary (9) is a nice Tony Gollan runner who comes off a win last start here over 1350 metres.

Selections:

3 – Outburst
5 – Kefalonia
6 – Toscanini
9 – The Actuary

Race 6

The first leg of the Quaddie - another Listed Race.

This race has had some early scratchings.

Edmonds Racing’s runner Moazi (11) looks well placed here. She comes off a solid second at her home track last start when beaten by the talented Command ’n’ Conquer. That run would suggest that she will be able to graduate to Saturday company and go well here.

Shinjin (12) is a Scott Morrisey trained runner who comes off a recent midweek win here. Maddy Wishart remains in the saddle. This mare will jump and take up the running and should lead without much pressure. If she gets away with some cheap sectionals, and with the claim for Maddy, she could just sneak a win, at large odds.

Stylish Saga (13) from the Chris Anderson Racing yards is fourth up here and will be another who can be expected to put in a bold showing.

There are many chances down the bottom of the field here – I think there will be some large numbers for the trifecta.

Selections:

11 – Moazi
12 – Shinjin
13 – Stylish Saga
9 – Magic Fox
Rough chance – (10) Bentley Magic

Race 7

A race for the three-year-old fillies.

It seems to be getting colder so the appropriate tip in this race is the Kris Lees trained Frozen In Time (3). She has won four from eleven and I think she has not been at home on the Kensington track in her last two efforts there. I am looking forward to her getting to the Doomben track this weekend with Andrew Mallyon to ride. In recent meetings the NSW form seems to have proved superior to the local form, so I am hoping this holds up here again.

The polar opposite and the topical quinella must be the Robert Heathcote trained Roasted (5). She was first up last start and was not disgraced. I think she would have derived some benefit from that run and will strip fitter here.

Say Heya (6), from the Gollan Racing yards, drops back from Listed grade to this class. She has performed well on wet tracks in the past.

Starla (4) won well last start at Warwick Farm. Maybe she can go on with it here – Luke Dittman to ride.

Selections:

3 – Frozen In Time
5 – Roasted
6 – Say Heya
4 – Starla
Rough chances – (9) Euro Belle, (13) Next Chapter

Race 8

This race is incredibly open as well.

I liked Kalik (4) first up when he raced at Listed level in the Mick Dittman Plate. He was caught wide with runners pushing up inside him but he ran an awesome race! This weekend, second up where he is undefeated (2 from 2), I think that he is wonderful value at $8 each way for Tony Haydon. Brad Stewart has the ride and I expect a bold showing from this runner.

Scout (5), from the Edmonds Racing team, has been racing without much luck. I think that back to Doomben, where he has won, and a damp track, he does get his opportunity to post his first win this preparation. With some speed in the race look for Huxtable to sit four pairs back and unleash him in the straight.

Stuttering resumed with a solid win here midweek over two weeks ago and he has won on a heavy track – many positive points. He has not a real good record second up – but maybe this could change this weekend with Mark Du Plessis to ride again.

Selections:

4 – Kalik
5 – Scout
9 – Stuttering
1 – Garibaldi
Rough chances – (2) Naval Strike (16) River Rocket

Race 9

The last race of the day – let us hope the rain does not mar this part of the meeting.

Jami Lady (11) looks a solid chance to finish the day off - trained by Steven O’Dea and to be ridden by Boris Thornton. She resumed a fortnight ago with a pronounced win at Eagle Farm. She will at home on the wet surface no matter what the conditions.

Kelly Schweida Racing has two runners resuming here – Spurcraft (2) and Guard of Honour (4). They both always perform well over these distances. Spurcraft (2) has trialled well recently with regular rider Bubba Tilley aboard – he won the trial easily and with that hit out he should be ready to run well here.

Guard of Honour (4) has a wonderful first up record with four wins from eight starts – Jimmy Orman has the ride. He is silly odds with $18 on offer. He loves genuine speed on early and will storm home late!

Ozark (12) has been racing consistently with two second placings in his last two starts. Maybe he is due for a change of luck this weekend.

Other rough chances are Just Orm (7) and Royal Witness (16) who could show up and cause and upset at big odds.

Selections:

11 – Jami Lady
4 – Guard of Honour
2 – Spurcraft
12 – Ozark
Rough chances – (7) Just Orm (16) Royal Witness

WINNO V FLEMO

FLEMO beat WINNO last weekend. I’m not certain how he is feeling now though after his beloved Broncos got carved up on Thursday night by Newcastle. They look like they may qualify for a wooden spoon in 2020! Be sure to check our up to date and amended tips each Saturday morning on Facebook after any track changes and scratchings!
