THE PETLEY REPORT (JUNE 20-JUNE 23) FROM NSW, QLD & VIC TO NZ, THE UK & SINGAPORE AND TO HK & THE US

By Jack Petley | Tuesday, June 23, 2020

Jack Petley has gathered a wealth of racing experience in many roles over several decades and in recent times he has produced a very informative daily racing news feed on Facebook. Jack will continue to post on facebook, where he has built up a healthy support base, but his commentary, across a broad section of racing precincts, will now also have a regular place on the HRO website.

This is THE PETLEY REPORT!

Tommy Berry was in top form at Randwick booting home four winners and almost gaining a fifth. He won on Partners, Mount Popa, Poetic Charmer and Agassi with the most impressive being that winner for Team Hawkes, Mount Poppa. He came away from his rivals ever so impressively and, to me, looks a rising star.

Connections of the brilliant Gytrash, I see, have the $15m Everest in their sights and the star sprinter may campaign in Sydney this spring to gain further kudos and hopefully an Everest slot.
_____________________________________________________________________

Santa Anna Lane is back in light work with Anthony Freedman and is likely to have another crack at the Everest if gaining a slot.

A report in the UK press overnight is that ace trainer Charlie Appleby is already planning a trip Down Under in the spring for his Melbourne Cup winner Cross Counter. The big stayer ran 8th last year not that far away from the winner and the time before, in 2018, he was successful for Appleby. Cross Counter ran in the Gold Cup during the week at Ascot and like the other stayers in the field was well and truly beaten by the great stayer Stradivarius.

Kiwi born Daniel Stackhouse is in wonderful form and the former Cantabrian is 24 wins clear on the Victorian Country Jockey Championship and one less than Jye McNeil in the State's overall premiership. Stackhouse has been given a boost to head towards a handy lead over McNeil with Jye being outed for 10 meetings after being suspended for careless riding at Bendigo after he had been in fine form the day before with a double at Flemington. Unless he appeals and is able to gain some days off, he will not return to riding until July 2.
_____________________________________________________________________

McNeil sits 4th on the Melbourne Premiership where Craig Williams, on 59, leads old-time rival Damien Oliver on 53.
_____________________________________________________________________

Leading Brisbane trainer Tony Gollan is on fire and, after the weekend, he has 101 1/2 winners in the Metropolitan area on the scoreboard.
_____________________________________________________________________

Ace Kiwi trainer Jamie Richards reports that Te Akau Shark has come through his eye operation well although he told the NZ Racing Desk that it is still "early days" in his rehabilitation process. Those other two stars of the stable, Melody Belle and Probabeel are getting through light work in fine style and they will eventually head to Melbourne where Richards is setting up a small stable.
_____________________________________________________________________

Richards said whether Melody Belle and Probabeel have a run in Sydney or head straight to Melbourne will be decided later. "They will probably trial in Sydney and then we will set out a plan." He said both would be entered for the WS Cox Plate.

Racing in NZ got underway again and what about that first day rider, apprentice Callum Jones. The 17-year-old gained his licence earlier in the week for his boss former top rider Nigel Tiley and he gained his first winner Diogenes and then, two races later made it win No 2 on Double Happy. And I note that he had not ridden a horse until three years ago when he joined up with Tiley. Jones noted that being apprenticed to a former champion jockey has been a big help.
____________________________________________________________________

Interesting to see the name Bailey Rogerson amongst the riding list for the Pukekohe races. She is a grand-daughter of Graeme and until the other day was a training member of Team Rogerson and an amateur rider ... but she has now turned professional.
_____________________________________________________________________

I note that the Rich Hill Stud shuttle stallion Vadamos had his first winner the other day, Sa Pala Umbrossa at Chilivani in Italy. The son of Monsun had his first crop go through the ring in at Karaka with 31 of his yearlings selling for a total of $3.1m in the Book 1 and 2 sessions at an average of $101,550 crowning him the leading first season sire at the sale. He returns to Rich Hill for this spring and will stand at the fee of $15,000 plus GST.

I note the betting figures were not that great in Oz on the NZ racing opener but then I also note no fields in the Tele and also, I am told, the NZ TAB has stopped paying for fields in local newspapers. Not a great move I would say.

The Singapore Government is moving into phase two of the Covid 19 policy and the Jockey Club has been given the nod to resume racing, behind closed doors. The schedule for racing will be announced in the next day or so on the Singapore TC website. Racing had been brought to a standstill by that wretched Covid-19 and a meeting has not been held at Kranji since April 7.
_____________________________________________________________________

Over the past few weeks several of the Singapore based jockeys have been plying their trade in Australia including Michael Rodd, Patrick Moloney and Daniel Moor while Kiwi Alysha Collett has been riding with success in NSW. She was successful at Newcastle on the weekend, on the same day her brother Jason rode a double in the City. For me, he Jason one of the most under rated younger riders in the City.
______________________________________________________________________

I see that David Hayes is in quarantine in Hong Kong at present and he will have one more week before he commences setting up his new stable, early in July and eventually he will take over the boxes being vacated by 70-year-old John Moore, who is heading to Sydney to train with brother Gary.
_____________________________________________________________________

It has been reported that John Moore and Gary have been granted 20 boxes at Rosehill by the Australian Turf Club
____________________________________________________________________

Still in HK, Zac Purton is four ahead of Joao Moreira on 128 with seven meetings to go and he has a chance to put another win or two on his arch rival with Moreira outed for one day on the weekend.
_____________________________________________________________________

Phillip Chen has been announced as chairman for the HKJC with the retirement of 70-year-old Anthony Chow.
_____________________________________________________________________

The 2020 Royal Ascot carnival, according to ITV, was the most watched with some 1.3m viewers average for the five days beating the previous best of 952,000.
_______________________________________________________________________

It was a big day for the NZ nursery Cambridge Stud and the Lindsays when an entire they will eventually stand at the famous stud farm at Cambridge, Youmzain, landed the Gr1 Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Ascot in the hands of Kevin Stott. The Kevin Ryan-trained sprinter lasted a hard gallop to narrowly beat last year's runner up Dream of Dreams with Sceptical a very close third in the hands of Frankie Dettori.
_____________________________________________________________________

Cambridge Stud own the Youmzain in partnership with Haras d'Etreham after the combination purchased the colt from Jaber Anbdullah. Stott rode the colt in the Commonwealth Cup and then James Doyle won the Sprint Cup at Haydock on the colt … but when the young horse changed hands Stott was given the ride back. That win now has the son of Kodiac, down to 6-1 from 12-1 for the July Cup.
______________________________________________________________________

Dettori said he should have won on Sceptical in the Golden Jubilee and he has already asked for the mount on the July Cup. "He will be a big, big chance," said the champion jockey.
_____________________________________________________________________

Ryan and Stott enjoyed further success on the day with Hey Jonesy in the Wokingham Stakes 35 minutes after they had claimed the Golden Jubilee.
______________________________________________________________________

Stott had a great day but then had a two-day ban handed down for using the whip on the shoulder of Youmzain in the last final furlong.
______________________________________________________________________

Pinatubo suffered defeat again at the carnival when beaten narrowly by Palace Pier in the St James Palace. And that win completed a treble for Frankie Dettori with the star rider having won earlier on Campenella and Alpine Star. The pair drove hard to the line with Palace Pier getting there narrowly with the third placed Wichita just a head behind.
_____________________________________________________________________

John Gosden, trainer of the winner, won his first St James Palace with Kingman in 2014 and he said this latest star would tackle the Prix Jacques le Marois at Deauville … a race won by Kingman, the sire of the winner.
_____________________________________________________________________

Palace Pier was Dettori's 73rd Ascot winner and the treble landed him the leading rider award of the carnival on countback from Jim Crowley.
______________________________________________________________________

John Gosden won the trainers crown at Royal Ascot with six winners.
_______________________________________________________________________

US trainer Wesley Ward has enjoyed very good success at Ascot over the past decade and he won with Cammpanelle and went close with Golden Pal. Ward had seven runners at Ascot for a win and two seconds and he said he is already plotting towards 2021.
______________________________________________________________________

Still at Royal Ascot, Hollie Doyle joined Hayley Turner and Gay Kelleway as a winner at Ascot with success on Scarlet Dragon in the Duke of Edinburgh. Last year Doyle enjoyed a wonderful season with 116 winners being only the third lady rider to reach a century, behind Turner and Josephine Gordon.
______________________________________________________________________

Earlier at Ascot, Frankie Dettori rode Fanny Logan to victory in the Hardwicke for John Gosden. The Lir Jet came with a strong run to narrowly beat the US raider Golden Pal in the Norfolk Stakes and Santiago was too good in the Queen's Vase
_____________________________________________________________________

Tom Marquand suffered the highs and lows of racing when he rode a double at Windsor, the same day that he was advised by the connections of the smart three-year-old English King that he was to be replaced in the Epsom Derby to the in-form Franklie Dettori. By Camelot the three-year-old gained a fine win in the Lingfield Derby Trial earlier in the month and looking at the latest betting for the Derby he is very firm at 7-2 and tightened slightly with the announcement that Dettori would take over from Marquand on the colt. Said trainer Ed Walker: "The Derby is the Derby and Frankie is Frankie. It is hard on Tom but I must say having Frankie up just gives us that little more confidence in the big one."
_____________________________________________________________________

In the US, Tiz the Law was so impressive winning the Belmont on the weekend in the US and now he is heading towards taking out the Triple Crown with the Kentucky Derby now on September 5 and the Preakness, on October 3
