WINNO'S WINNERS: DOOMBEN, JULY 25, 2020

By Darren Winningham | Friday, July 24, 2020

DOOMBEN RACES – SATURDAY 25 JULY 2020

Doomben races this weekend with the track rated “SOFT”. Rain is supposed to be on its way the remainder of the week so it would appear we may be racing on a worse surface. I have looked at runners that will handle a soft surface – but things could change! The rail is out 0.5 metres for the entire circuit.

Baylee Nothdurft is in the news this week after sustaining a fractured jaw after a mishap at trackwork. I am sure he will take the necessary time to recover and come back bigger and better! Is that even possible after this season? Get well mate and speedy recovery!

I am keeping it brief this week with the weather and the condition of the track come race day holding the key to our success this weekend. If it gets into heavy range take a close look at the Les Ross Racing runners – his horses just seem to thrive on heavy tracks!

NB: As these selections were made prior to race-day please check for any changes to track conditions and for any scratchings on the day
___________________________________________________________________

Race 1

The two-year old’s start the day. The boy’s edition.

Acrobatic (2) resumed from a spell in dynamic fashion and slayed the opposition. He trialled well on a soft track prior to that win – I hope he gets to sit in behind some runners drawn inside of him that will push up. Last start he led and was impressive. Trained by Kelly Schweida, he will be ridden again by Mark DuPlessis.

Mishani Fraudster (4) is one of those Les Ross Racing runners that I said will handle the wet conditions. Jimmy Orman resumes his association with this gelding. He has drawn the rails and will be a runner that will take up the running.

The Desleigh Forster trained Boom Spender (1) has the blinkers on this start – watch out for an improved effort.

Master Red (9) won a recent barrier trial in solid fashion and could prove a knockout chance here. Tegan Harrison is riding this gelding for trainer Jon Walk.

Selections:

2 – Acrobatic
4– Mishani Fraudster
1 – Boom Spender
9 – Master Red

Race 2

David Vandyke Racing trains this impressive Tycoon Ruler filly Toorooloo who won on debut at the Doomben midweek. It was a very dominant win in strong time. Ryan Maloney remains aboard here.

Kisukano (1), trained by Michael Nolan, is clearly the best runner in the race. She was sensational resuming at the Sunshine Coast a fortnight ago. She is going places with a possible Sydney campaign. The weight is my only concern here but she oooooooozes Class – with a capital “C”. I just think (like I did last start) the weight may stop here this weekend. On the flip side she does love the wet and heavy tracks.

Les Ross trains both Patty’s Fortune (8) and Hancora Field (2) who are both not without a chance of causing an upset.

Selections:

5 – Toorooloo
1 – Kisukano
8 – Patty’s Fortune
2 – Hancora Field

Race 3

Smartedge (3) from Snowden Racing is fourth up and has been racing in higher class races in Sydney. He comes here probably looking for a track no worse than soft – he doesn’t appreciate the heavy going so keep this in mind. Jim Byrne rides him here and has a solid association with the Snowden stables when they bring runners to Queensland.

Prince of Tie (6) was impressive on a heavy track a fortnight ago at the Sunshine Coast. On that occasion he was superbly rated by apprentice Jackson “McLovin” Murphy – who has been quiet of late. Maybe he is about to appear from the shadows and will get more opportunities now Baylee Nothdurft is injured. I hope so as he is a great rider and deserves more opportunities.

Selections:

3 – Smartedge
6 – Prince of Tie
8 – Aqua Vite
1 – Gresham
Rough chance: (2) Right or Wrong

Race 4

Tony Gollan, I think, may have found the race for Light Up The Room (12) here this weekend with Mark Du Plessis to ride. She has been racing over 1350 metres in her last two starts and I think she will appreciate dropping back to 1200 metres – especially on the wet track. Another nice steer for Mark Du Plessis.

Leroytheconqueror (8) certainly “conquered” them last start at the Sunshine Coast on a heavy track. Prior to that run he had raced very well here over 1200 metres. He looks ideally placed this weekend by trainer Damien Batters and he will be partnered again by Jake Bayliss.

Keep your eye on Elixir (2) - he may just have the right potion here to post another win over 1200 metres. He is on the quick back up from running last weekend at Ipswich so trainer Les Kelly must be happy with him. He has placed previously on a heavy track. His form over 1200 metres is solid and I think the class and possibly the 1350 metres did him in last weekend. I see that apprentice Leah Kilner will take 3 kilograms off his allocated 60 kilograms with her claim. She is a strong rider and a I would suggest she is a good choice for this gelding.

Kylease (10), from the Steven O’Dea stable, has been knocking on the door with some consistent form in Sydney. A stable change for this runner may see a change of fortune with a win here.

Selections:

12 – Light Up The Room
10 – Kylease
2 – Elixir
8 – Leroytheconqueror

Rough chance – (1) Denarius

Race 5

These races (sigh) – the same suspects each week going around looking for a victory!

Polemic (4) from the Stephen Lee Racing yard at Ballina loves wet tracks. His two runs over the recent Grafton Carnival were solid enough to suggest he may be able to post a win here. He really needs a strong rider to keep his mind on the job – now in saying that Jake Bayliss has been booked to ride him.

Chris Waller Racing from the Gold Coast has three runners here and they probably all should fill the places – in what order who knows!

I like the runs of He Runs Away (13) who has been racing over 2400 metres in Sydney in his recent starts. I think the long distances is not his go and dropping back to 2000 metres here could see him dramatically improve and he may cause and upset in a field that is very open and anything could happen. Mark Du Plessis has the ride.

Waller’s other two runners Magione (1) and Stardome (3) are not without genuine chances as well.

Selections:

4 – Polemic
13 – He Runs Away
3 – Stardome
1 – Magione
Rough chance – (6) Dissolution

Race 6

The first leg of the Quaddie this weekend.

Gollan Racing have a solid runner here in Tullio (12) with Jim Byrne to take the reins. This runner has been in grand form posting three consecutive wins. The last win was over 1000 metres at the Sunshine Coast. The 1050 metres here will not be a problem nor will a wet track. He looks a big chance in an open line-up.

Jardin Rouge (4) has had an eight week freshen up since her last start for Brian Wakefield. She has had a recent trial and performed well. She goes very well first up as well – the wet track will not hinder her and Larry Cassidy has ridden her for 5 out of her 6 career starts. She is great value at $11.

Steven O’Dea has Cool Consequence (2) who is second up here and carrying a massive weight of 61 kilograms. This seven-year-old gelding loves heavy tracks – so the wetter it is the more his chances will be enhanced this weekend. The weight did concern me at first until I saw that apprentice Nathan “FAZ” Fazackerley has been booked. His three-kilogram claim plus his eagerness to post his first Saturday metro winner (I think I am right here) probably gives this runner a serious chance in an open field.

Less Ross has Defence Missile in the race to be ridden by Jimmy Orman. This runner is a duck - I am sure he has webbed feet. The heavier the track gets the better this runner’s chances will become. He is a certainty if the track gets into that heavy bog stage on Saturday.

Selections:

12 – Tullio
4 – Jardin Rouge
2 – Cool Sequence
6 – Defence Missile
Rough chance – (9) Howwonderfullifeis

Race 7

Say Heya (9) from the Tony Gollan yard looks the one on paper to beat here – that could mean the first two legs of the Quaddie to Gollan Racing! Stephanie Thornton is aboard here. Say Heya has been freshened since a solid win here five weeks ago on a heavy track. She recent barrier trial as well under her belt where she was impressive. Hard to see her not being in the first two when the judge calls a halt to the race.

Better Reflection (2) resumes here for trainer John Wigginton. She has been racing in better class races and disappointed last start at Doomben. Since then she has trialled well back home in Rockhampton. Ashley Butler rode her in the trial and has made the decision to come to Brisbane to partner her this weekend. I think this is a good lead to suggest they have got her ready to fire.

Snowzone (5) from Kris Lees Racing looks a rough chance here – he does love the wet surfaces.

Selections:

9 – Say Heya
2 – Better Reflection
5 – Snowzone
7 – Mishani Spirit
Rough chance – (3) Starla

Race 8

The Lindsay Gough trained Alderman (2) is second up here with Jimmy Orman aboard. He likes to race in the lead and, drawn in barrier 7 with not many others in the race that I can see placing any pressure on him, that should mean that he gets across and Orman can rate him as he likes in front. Now he is fitter … Orman getting left alone in front … some cheap sectionals and WINNO putting him on top means he should win! His form second up is solid, and he does have some proven form on soft tracks. Some good odds on offer as well at $6.

Arthur In Charge (10) has been racing in fine fettle. He has had two starts for his new trainer Chris Munce. Larry Cassidy takes over the reins this weekend. He looks as if he is perfectly placed in this race and has been well supported in the early markets.

She Za Boss (8), from Edmonds Racing, is looking for a hat trick of wins. She is coming off solid midweek wins and steps up to weekend grade. I am a little concerned with her form on rain affected tracks – but her recent efforts have been good. If she handles the conditions, she is a genuine chance. Edmonds runners go well here at Doomben.

Selections:

2 – Alderman
8 – She Za Boss
10– Arthur In Charge
11 – Lose The Snip

Race 9

Reus (5) won the Grafton Guineas over their recent Carnival. It was a striking win for the Michael Costa trained son of Star Witness. I was concerned originally when he had drawn barrier 18, however, several early scratchings have reduced the field to 13 already. With possibly some more coming out prior to start time I think this gelding maps well to sit in behind the speed and then be exposed to storm home late. He is undefeated on slow and heavy surfaces and I think that statistic will remain intact come 4.55pm on Saturday afternoon. Robbie Fradd has ridden him successfully previously and I cannot see why we will not be collecting from the bookies when he wins!

Roman Aureus (11) is trained by Brian Wakefield and is on the quick back up after running a gallant third last weekend at Ipswich behind Stuttering, who has been scratched already from this race. Stepping up to the mile here from 1350 metres last weekend is a massive tick in my opinion. The way he raced last weekend and then worked home late suggest that the mile should be no drama.

Wapiti (2) comes off a wonderful win in the Sunshine Coast WINX Guineas. He thrives on wet tracks as well. Will race on the speed which may be an advantage late in the day if the track chops up badly. Just a little concerned with the 61 kilograms – but he has earnt it! Sean Cormack retains the ride here, so no claim for an apprentice!

Selections:

5 – Reus
11– Roman Aureus
2 – Wapiti
4 – Euro Belle

Looks like a tight tussle this weekend between Mark Du Plessis, Jim Byrne and Larry Cassidy. I think Mark may grab the win – but this could change if there are further scratchings.
