WINNO'S WINNERS: EAGLE FARM, AUGUST 15, 2020

By Darren Winningham | Thursday, August 13, 2020

We are back at Eagle Farm this weekend with the track rated “GOOD”.

The rail is out 2.5 metres the entire circuit. Weather looks awesome for the rest of the week – however, they are forecasting rain late Saturday afternoon.

How about the turmoil at Red Hill – poor Broncos – just having a really bad time!

This week we should have been at the EKKA – showbags, the ring events, the wood chopping, fireworks, and side show alley where the rides are always a rip off – but fun to jump on. Then what about the traditional strawberry ice cream cones and fresh strawberries – the things that we are giving up due this bloody virus!

Well that is my thoughts for the week – it is preview time.

NB: As these selections were made prior to race-day please check for any changes to track conditions and for any scratchings on the day
_____________________________________________________________________

Race 1

A small field over a long distance.

I am forgiving the last start failure of Brando (4) on a heavy track. He hates wet tracks and is hopeless in wet weather. Now he is back to a firm track and Eagle Farm where he won two starts ago. He is trained by Tony Haydon and will be ridden by Robbie Fradd again. He is owned and bred by Neville Bell, Chairman of the BRC.

Desleigh Forster and Taylor Marshall have won the first race on the program at the last two Saturday metro meetings – can they do it again this week with Twilighter (5).

The other runners are even – take your pick.

I will be watching the race with my wallet firmly in my pocket!

Selections:

4 – Brando
5 – Twilighter
6 – Joymaker
1 – Dashing Special

Race 2

The new three years old’s (last years’ babies) are going around here.

I have been tipping against Kisukano (1) from the Nolan Racing yards the past few weeks.

This weekend I am with her. She is back on top of the ground with Alex Patis to ride and take 3 kilograms off the 62 kilograms allocated I think she will return to the winner’s stalls. That should make the Nolan Racing strappers Nick Hahn and Greer Beck happy this weekend – no nasty messages this week boys!

Les Ross and Jimmy Orman combine with Mishani Miss (2) to try and go back to back after winning here a fortnight ago over 1000 metres.

Desleigh Forster and Taylor Marshall combine again here with Georgie’s Pride (5) who comes off winning first up at the Sunshine Coast. This filly may cause an upset – she looks progressive. She has the blinkers on the first time this weekend as well.

Selections:

1 – Kisukano
2 – Mishani Miss
5 – Georgie’s Pride
6 – I’m Magical

Race 3

A tough no metro win race here over 1400 metres.

I like the Scott Morrisey trained Love Struck (5). I was actually love struck earlier in the week when I opened the cupboard and found some Caramel Tim Tams at the back of the pantry. I will pack them for Saturday and share them with you all – first in best dressed!

Back to this gelding to be ridden by Michael “Muppy” Hellyer. He has been a little quiet of late off the track – how are your Manly Sea Eagles going mate? This gelding is second up here and has won previously second up. He has seven weeks between runs and was solid in a recent trial at the Gold Coast. Take a look at the trial it is a lot better than what it appears on paper - $15 about this runner is great each way odds.

Super Contender (6) is from the Waller Racing team on the Gold Coast and will be ridden by Michael Cahill this weekend. This runner has been dynamic since having his first start in late June. He won on debut and last start won on the Gold Coast in commanding fashion – he is short priced with $1.90 on offer – he is the obvious choice. The big track will suit him, and he will be racing in behind the speed.

Absolut Circle is trained up north by Ricky Vale. I see Ash Butler is coming to ride him here at 60 kilograms – the large weight will mean he should not have to work too hard this weekend! He has won his past three starts at Rockhampton and deserves his opportunity in the big smoke.

Selections:

5 – Love Struck
6 – Super Contender
9 – Titanium
1 – Absolut Artie

Race 4

Another no metro win race here over 1400 metres.

Gillian Heinrich trains Woman of Gold (7) who has won here previously. Last start she raced here over 1200 metres and started to work into the race late well – stepping up to 1400 metres this weekend should suit her.

All Shiraz (9) is trained by Rex Lipp in Toowoomba. She looks like she will appreciate the 1400 metres. Mark Du Plessis will ride her this weekend.

Edmonds Racing’s She Za Boss (3) has won her past two starts and looks to post her first win here at Eagle Farm. She is the pre post favourite – I am going to say she cannot win – the stable struggles at Eagle Farm and I think the step up to weekend grade will be too hard for her!

But it is a very tough race – anything could occur here!

Selections:

7 – Woman Of Gold
9 – All Shiraz
1 – Tycoon Street
3 – She Za Boss
Rough chance – (4) Bubbles Ball

Race 5

Chris Waller Racing based on the Gold Coast has two genuine chances here.

Mangione (2) will be ridden by Luke Dittman – this combination won another race together last weekend with Fairy Me Home – can they repeat the dose here this weekend? I hope for Luke that he can get this runner home, BUT I think he has gone the wrong way and got off the winner – the stable mate Lord Gododdin (5). I think he had no choice in the matter when this runner was allocated 54 kilograms – he would probably have to cut an arm off to make the weight!

Instead Lord Gododdin (5) will be ridden by Michael Cahill. This runner worked home well late last time at the same distance and track a fortnight ago. There were a few excuses as well in the straight when he was held up around the 250 metres. Give him a clear run this weekend – he should win. Up in class slightly and down in weight (5 kilograms lighter) I expect him to be getting past the post first.

Mushaireb (1) is trained by Richard and Michael Freedman and will be ridden by Ryan Wiggins. He raced well last start over 1600 metres – I think the extra 200 metres will help him here.

Selections:

5 – Lord Gododdin
1 – Mushaireb
2 – Mangione
3 – Glen Ord

Race 6

The first leg of the Quaddie this weekend is over 1200 metres.

Looks a particularly good race on paper.

I may be way off the mark here, but I am going to go with the Kelly Schweida trained Acrobatic (6) who went so bad last start … it was too bad to be true! I think it was the heavy track or something went wrong in running. I see that this weekend the tongue tie goes on. At $21 I think we may see an improved effort. Mark Du Plessis stays aboard.

Super Effort (7) debuted with a BANG at the Sunshine Coast for Chris Waller Racing. He comes to Eagle Farm – Saturday class – and I think there are a few things against him here. His time was good though - he went to the line under his own steam and maybe he had more to offer. We will see come Saturday. He is the pre post favourite.

Return With Honour (1) is from the Gerald Ryan stables in Sydney. Seems as if he has been granted a COVID-19 pass to enter the state of Queensland! He had a barrier trial 2 weeks ago at Rosehill and the trial was impressive. He should race well here, despite the large weight.

Selections:

6 – Acrobatic
1 – Return With Honour
7 – Super Effort
2 – Mishani Fraudster
Rough chance – (5) Boom Spender

Race 7

A small field here in an Open sprint.

There is a fair bit of speed in this race – look for a swooper to fly home late.

Snitch (1) resumes here for Gollan Racing and will be suited with the pace on early. He hasn’t got a good record first up, that may be against him here this weekend, but it is an even field. Ryan Maloney is in the saddle. Maybe he will be better second up?

Impasse (3) is a Matthew Dunn Racing runner who also resumes this weekend. He has had a couple of trials to get ready for the first up effort. Robbie Fradd will ride. Again, has never won first up, but has a solid record on this track.

Catesby (6) is a Desleigh Forster runner to be ridden by Taylor Marshall. He was leading first up and just faded late to go down narrowly – he lost a plate in running as well. He drops 6 kilograms from his first up start. He does go up in class – but I think they can probably afford to let the other speedsters go hard here and take a sit. Maybe if he gets a nice trail into the race, he will finish off strong.

Junction (11) resumes for Mark Currie and will be ridden by Luke Tarrant. This runner resumes from a short 18-week spell and previously had won two in a row. He does have a solid first up record. Maybe Luke will be all smiles as he was last weekend to see the mighty NSW supporter WINNO at the races!

Selections:

6 – Catesby
1 – Snitch
3 – Impasse
11 – Junction

Race 8

This is another open race with many chances – over 1600 metres.

Skate To Paris (6), a Chris Munce runner, has been well supported in the early markets again like he was a fortnight ago when he posted a win here over 1400 metres. Larry Cassidy remains aboard and Cassidy comes off a solid double last weekend at Doomben when he paired with Brian Wakefield. This mare may just post a series of wins now she has found the winning post.

Right Or Wrong (5) is a Lindsay Gough runner who finished off strongly last start in the race won by Skate to Paris (6). He meets him slightly better at the weights and he could show up here with the extra distance being in his favour.

There are some roughies here at massive prices that could upset the more favoured runners. Do not underestimate the chances of Prince of Tie (11) and Happy Go Plucky (12).

Selections:

6 – Skate To Paris
5 – Right Or Wrong
11 – Prince of Tie
12 – Happy Go Plucky

Race 9

The last race of the day a 1000 metre sprint.

Looks like Tony Gollan Racing has two good chances to win the last on the program.

Pizonie (8) has Ryan Maloney in the saddle and he resumes here this weekend. He does race well at this track and always goes well fresh.

Howwonderfullifeis (11) raced very well last start when beaten by her stablemate Tullio – who suffered a pre-race drama last weekend and raced below par. If you go on the run at Doomben this runner is a serious contender here.

Mittere (13), from the Dan Bougoure yards, has posted two consecutive wins. He looks for a hat trick here this weekend after a three-week let up since that last win here in midweek company. Robbie Fradd retains the ride.

Selections:

8 – Pizonie
11– Howwonderfullifeis
13 – Mittere
5 – The Tenor
Rough chances – (1) Rock Beat

Jockey’s Challenge

I think the result will come from either Ryan Maloney, Robbie Fradd and Michael Cahill. Maybe Ryan Maloney to win – but save on Michael Cahill who should be good odds too.

AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST ... Earlier in the week Jim Byrne announced that he will follow the Robert Heathcote sensation Rothfire to NSW for his campaign and hat he would base himself down there for a good number of weeks. I know it must be difficult for him to move to the mighty NSW and have access to the best harbour in the world. The freshest air. The best Rugby League team. The best Rugby Union team. The best cricket team. I am hoping being amongst such excellence will rub off my little QLD mate and his wonderful jockey skills will be put on display across the Carnival. I am sure he will be sought after by the trainers down there over the Carnival.

In late exclusive news – Jim was seen on Thursday evening at Myers Chermside trying on a BLUE suit – white shirt and a stunning BLUE tie. Clearly, he is getting into that NSW spirit and wearing the local colours! He does look good in blue. (see above)

I would like to wish him well in Sydney.
