WINNO'S WINNERS: DOOMBEN, SEPTEMBER 12, 2020

By Darren Winningham | Friday, September 11, 2020

DOOMBEN RACES – SATURDAY 12 SEPTEMBER 2020

We are back at DOOMBEN this weekend with the track rated “SOFT”. Last weekend I did find six winners at Doomben on a nice day for punters! This week I am going to be brief.

NB: As these selections were made prior to race-day please check for any changes to track conditions and for any scratchings on the day

Race 1

A small field over 1200 metres to start the day.

I am going for some value – Princess Cordelia (5) at around $12 – trained by Mitchell Beer and to be ridden by Andrew Mallyon.

Selections:

5 – Princess Cordelia
6 – Trengganu
11 – Superare
2 – Aheadofhistime

Race 2

The race has been decimated by scratchings.

Amiche (7) is trained by David Vandyke and will be ridden by Ryan Maloney. It has been a wild ride for this pair in recent weeks with several winners each weekend in the city on a Saturday. They are targeting these races well and Amiche (7) looks like she can go on with it here. She is second up after winning in dominant fashion first up here three weeks ago.

Selections:

7 – Amiche
4 – Chico Milagro
9 – Oh Five Glory
8 – Hearts Lifted

Race 3

The small fields continue here.

The Edmonds Racing runner Fisticuffs (10) is the one to beat. The addition of blinkers this weekend is a massive positive for this runner. Ryan Maloney takes the reins and this race looks to be perfect for him.

Parko (7) is trained on the Gold Coast by Scott Morrisey who has had successive wins in town each Saturday for the past five weeks. Last weekend he partnered with Ryan Wiggins (who rides this one) to win the last race. Can they strike here again this weekend?

Selections:

10 - Fisticuffs
7 – Parko
8 – Mittere
2 – One Stryke

Race 4

Only nine runners here.

Tony Gollan trains The Actuary (1) and Baylee Nothdurft is in the saddle – she resumes here and at her best could give this lot a shake.

Tycoon Evie (6) is trained by Rex Lipp. She looks like she has some improvement in her after she won here in a midweek meeting 3 weeks ago. Jimmy Orman keeps the ride – I would not be surprised if she shows up here.

Good Chat (5) another David Vandyke runner with Ryan Maloney aboard must be respected.

Selections:

6 – Tycoon Evie
5 – Good Chat
9 – Safework
1 – The Actuary

Race 5

This is a nice race – but only nine runners and you could make a case for all of them,

I am staying loyal with Love Struck (5) who just keeps winning. Looking for a hat trick of wins this weekend for the dynamic duo of Michael Hellyer and Gold Coast trainer Scott Morrisey. This gelding drops back in distance this weekend, however, his style of racing should not inhibit him getting to the line hard here. I suppose I must say something here as “Muppy Hellyer” will be crowing at the course tomorrow as his Manly Sea Eagles beat my Bulldogs on Friday night – I think I will get in early – STICK IT MUPPY!

You Make Me Smile (3) has the addition of the tongue tie – an important gear change. He is second up this weekend for the Steven O’Dea Racing team. Ronnie Stewart is aboard – he loves to cause an upset. This runner is around the $10 mark and represent good value.

Robert Heathcote Racing has Ziemba (9) second up here after a great win first up. Stephanie Thornton stays aboard – a repeat effort like that here will see him win this race easily.

Selections:

5 – Love Struck
3 – You Make Me Smile
9 – Ziemba
7 – Snowzone

Race 6

The first leg of the Quaddie this weekend is over 1600 metres with yet another miniature field.

Napoleon Solo (4) is on the quick back up. He seemed to peak on his run late last weekend. I am just punting that he has taken some benefit from that hit out and will strip fitter.

Flying Machine (6) is trained by Selina Leef. She is a seven-year-old and somehow has decided to get her mind on the job and has run well – winning her last start is good fashion.

Top Me Up Again (9) is trained by B J Smith. He won well last start at Eagle Farm midweek. I tell you what, if he brings that form and effort to this race, he is the one to beat here. Larry Cassidy takes the ride this weekend.

Canapes (10) from the Paul Butterworth yard, with Wendy Peel in the saddle, has been heavily supported in the last 48 hours. I am not a fan but someone has been loading up.

Selections:

4 – Napoleon Solo
6 – Flying Machine
9 – Top Me Up Again
10 – Canapes

Race 7

Another race over the mile here.

Skate to Paris (3) is a Munce Racing runner. She was unlucky last start – beaten when held off by The Candy Man who did claim the chocolates on that occasion. This weekend there is some speed in the race and I expect this mare to just sit in behind them and then unleash her customary sprint at the end of the race. Only a slight reservation here is that she does seem to go better across the road at Eagle Farm.

Toryjoy (4) a Chris Waller Racing runner makes her debut in Queensland for the stable. She has some solid form in Listed company last start. She has had three weeks since that run to get a freshen up. She may just want the track a little softer than what she will get here.

Supergiant (6) from the Michael Costa stables will be ridden by Matty McGillivray this weekend. There are a few gear changes with this runner – the most notable is that the tongue tie goes on. This gear change could well prove the difference in his performance this weekend as the first up run was too bad to believe.

Selections:

3 – Skate To Paris
4 – Toryjoy
6 – Supergiant
10 – One For Betty

Race 8

A sprint race over 1110 metres.

All the talk is about the David Vandyke runner and top weight Alligator Blood (1).

He is a class runner – but the big weight, first up and with an ambitious campaign ahead of him I cannot see him winning the race. In fact, I am going to say he cannot win! (Okay – get the face wipe for the egg on my face).

I like the Kelly Schweida Racing runner The Odyssey (7) drawn barrier 1 and with a 7-kilogram weight difference between him and the topweight I am looking for an upset. He just loves the Doomben track 5 wins here. He always puts in first up as well. Stephanie Thornton is in the saddle. There is some pace in the race – that may be his only downfall, however, last preparation they got him to settle and take a sit and finish off strongly. What will be the intent this weekend – for mine I would let the speedy Fiery Heights take the running and get in behind and get home late and get the chocolates!

Just Orm (3) from the Tony Gollan yards will appreciate the speed on as well. Do not overlook this runner if you are looking for something to knock off the favourite.

Selections:

7 – The Odyssey
1 – Alligator Blood
3 – Just Orm
10 – Catesby

Race 9

The last race of the day over 2000 metres. Why would they do this to us?

My suggestion is get ya pockets full of cash in the previous race and then head to Gallopers for a quiet couple! Not much interest here.

Humbolt Current (7) comes off a nice win last start – in fact, it was dominant. The is some good speed in the race again this weekend and it will suit him down to the ground. A jockey change due to the 54 kilograms – Michael Cahill will ride.

The stable mate is Alward (2) and he will be partnered by Luke Dittman. He finished off well last start over 1825 meters. The extra distance will be right up his alley this weekend.

Sir Barnabus (5) has had a six-week break. He goes well here at this track and has Jimmy Orman in the saddle. The key to these races is normally the ones that keep going around each week seem to eventually win. He may need the run this weekend – but keep your eye on him next start.

Aliferous (6) doesn’t win too often but he will not get a better chance to get back in the winners stalls after a run of outs – not winning a race for 74 weeks.

Selections:

7 – Humbolt Current
2 – Alward
5– Sir Barnabus
6 – Aliferous

Jockey’s Challenge

I think the result will be between Ryan Maloney and Jimmy Orman – but Ronnie Stewart may be a dark horse at massive odds. I may just go for Jimmy Orman in a tight one.
