WINNO'S WINNERS: DOOMBEN, OCTOBER 10, 2020

By Darren Winningham | Friday, October 9, 2020

This weekend we head back to DOOMBEN with the track rated “GOOD” and the rail is in the true position. These meetings are just complementing the superb racing at RANDWICK and CAULFIELD this weekend.

NB: As these selections were made prior to race-day please check for any changes to track conditions and for any scratchings on the day

Race 1

A small field to start the day.

Kelly Schweida Racing turns out Magic Conqueror (1) after a recent win at Toowoomba. Larry Cassidy remains in the saddle and he has been in great form of late. I thought the 59 kilograms may be of some concern at first, however, there is some good speed in the race, and they should scoot along here. The small field favours this runner who should be able to trail them into the straight and come home late.

Palaszczuk (6) is looking for another victory after winning last start at Ipswich. Has this Michael Costa trained mare gone too fast too early – after all the big day is still three weeks away when the State of Queensland will decide who shall be in government come the summer months?

Moonan Me (2) is trained by Brian Smith and Justin Huxtable will be riding. This runner will appreciate the mile.

Eagles Forever (4) is trained by Bryan & Daniel Guy and co-owned by John & Gary Moore, who have set up stables in Sydney. This gelding will take up the running this weekend. He has won at the mile and, you know what, he could just be the one to beat if he gets away with cheap sectionals in front.

Selections:

1 – Magic Conqueror
6 – Palaszczuk
2 – Moonan Me
4 – Eagles Forever

Race 2

This is the filly’s edition of the two-year-old races on the program today.

Now I am staying where the fire may be still be smouldering after the recent Toowoomba meeting.

Alert and Ready (6) was smashed in the betting on debut for the Kevin Kemp stables at that meeting. But right when she was starting to work into the race, she threw off the jockey Maddy Wishart who suffered several injuries. On that note, speedy recovery Maddy and come back bigger and better!

This weekend Andrew Mallyon is in the saddle and hopefully he brings his Super Glue and remains in the saddle. She is around $6 this weekend and I think she is a solid gamble each way.

Shaluna (3) is from the Robert Heathcote yards making her debut here. Blinkers go on as well. She has been well supported in the early markets solidly being backed from $4.50 into $3.70. The trial win at Eagle Farm was solid as well – I expect a bold showing here this weekend.

Le Rubis (1) is trained by Chris Anderson Racing. She won her trial by five lengths in extraordinary style, but the time for mine was a little slower than some of the other heats on the morning. She will have derived benefit from that hit out and Matthew McGillivray rides her on her race debut.

True Moonlight is trained on the Gold Coast by Gillian Heinrich. A solid winner in her trial on her home track three weeks ago – Jimmy Orman remains aboard for her first career start.

Selections:

6 – Alert and Ready
3 – Shaluna
1 – Le Rubis
4 – True Moonlight

Race 3

This is the colts and gelding’s edition of the two-year-old races on the program today.

Electric Spirit (3) is a Stuart Kendrick runner who won a trial at the Sunshine Coast - $21 on offer in some markets I am going for some value here with limited form available on some of the other runners.

Les Ross has several runners – I think they all have genuine chances as well.

Grey Defence (4) has Sheriden Tomlinson aboard. He gets 3 kilograms off so Grey Defence gets in well for his first race.

Our Hot Friend (9) has Matthew McGillivray aboard and I think he had plenty left at the end of a recent trial at Eagle Farm. He could prove to be the one to beat.

Mishani Operator (1) produced a solid debut at Toowoomba finishing second to stable-mate Mishani Scandal. Robbie Fradd rides.

There has been some good support early for the Heinrich Racing runner Prime Asset (11), also making his debut here. The money flow would suggest that he will be hard to toss.

This race is very open – I expect an upset – watch for any market movers as post time draws closer.

Selections:

3 – Electric Spirit
4 – Grey Defence
9 – Our Hot Friend
1 – Mishani Operator
Rough chance – (11) Prime Asset

Race 4

Only a small field here with several early scratching’s – a Class 3 contest.

Gollan Racing is well represented with Ready to Roam (9), Lyrical Girl (13) and Leadership Spill (7).

Leadership Spill (7) I suppose is a topical tip with the State election upon us. Any bets on who will be the leader of the party who is defeated in three weeks? Will Labor win? Will the LNP win – or will Clive Palmer have an impact on the result?

Leadership Spill will bounce out and lead this lot – Tegan Harrison remains aboard, and he will be difficult to run down if left alone in front.

My tip though is the stable mate – Ready to Roam (9). The run at Toowoomba is solid enough to suggest he can win this race. Baylee Nothdurft is in the saddle – back in grade as well – just let me get some of that $10 that is on offer right now. Back at Doomben where he can sit out the back and with a solid speed here, he gets things in his favour.

Lyrical Girl (13) is looking for a hat trick of wins. She has won at Maiden and Class 1 grades in her past two starts. Both efforts have been good and Tony Gollan must have an opinion of this runner to step her up here to Saturday grade this weekend. She will race on the speed as well. Ben Thompson rides.

Oh Five Glory (12) was sent out favourite last start in a Class 6 race in Toowoomba and was not disgraced in the race. Drops back in grade but has just drawn terribly in barrier 14. I think his Will and Peter Hulbert trained mare goes better ridden in front so the stable apprentice Adin Thompson will have to get her out cleanly and across the face of the field and steady her – and yes he can do it!

Selections:

9 – Ready To Roam
12 – Oh Five Glory
13 – Lyrical Girl
7 – Leadership Spill

Race 5 - 2020 QLD CUP

The feature race on the program.

Bjorn Baker brings his five-year-old gelding Fun Fact (3) north to Queensland to win again. He loves to roll along in front and he does kick strongly and always digs deep in the final 100 metres. They have booked Jimmy Orman to ride him. I remember when he won the Grand Prix (Group 3) in May 2019 at Eagle Farm when he just rolled along in front. He drops 5.5 kilograms from his last start effort at Rosehill.

Desleigh Forster trains Free Fly Too (5) who went down in the final bound in the Toowoomba Cup when beaten by Alward (1). He is fourth up here this weekend and, to be fair, probably is the best weighted in the race. He will run out the distance and could give Ben Thompson his first Listed winner in Queensland.

The other runners all have chances – but I think these are the two stand out runners but keep your eye on Sir Barnabus (4). The blinkers come off this weekend.

Selections:

3 – Fun Fact
5 – Free Fly Too
6 – Fastnet Cyclone
4 – Sir Barnabus

Race 6

The first leg of the Quaddie, over 1200 metres, and it is a tiny field.

Batangas Entry (2) gets a race where he could claim consecutive wins after winning his maiden last start at the Gold Coast. The race has some genuine speed and he will settle off the speed before storming home late. Jimmy Orman retains the ride as well – this runner is around $10.

Xerri (1) has the best recent form in the race running consecutive seconds. He has won a race here at Doomben and I expect that the Edmonds Racing team will be looking to grab a Saturday winner – they just have had no luck in recent weeks! Robbie Fradd has been entrusted again to pilot this one to victory. He is on a run of outs as well on Saturday meetings – maybe they can combine and turn it around with this runner.

Casa Tranquila (11) was bred and is owned by Harvey Norman owner Gerry Harvey and is trained on the Gold Coast by Michael Costa. She debuted on her home track and looked like she just ran out of fitness in the final stages. She will have taken a lot of benefit from that run and could be one to upset this lot at only her second start.

Atouchofsyn (12) is a roughie at $61 and is trained by Gary Duncan. She raced well on debut at Ipswich and I think really was not suited on the day by the track. Since then she has had a seven week freshen up. She has drawn barrier 1 and may just be one that could throw some value into the trifecta and first four dividends.

Selections:

2 – Batangas Entry
1 – Xerri
12 – Casa Tranquila
11 – Atouchofsyn

Race 7

Another open race here.

Not a race I am thrilled about.

Hearts Lifted (11) is a mare trained by Michael Costa to be ridden by Jag Guthmann Chester. She raced well a month ago when narrowly beaten by Chicago Milagro and that form looks good enough to sneak away with this race.

Raging Pole (6) is fourth up for Sears Racing. Luke Tarrant aboard this week. Lucky for him I will not be at the track to remind him of the pending NSW whitewash in the upcoming 2020 State of Origin series – then again, they say real men wear pink and this is the colour of the silks of this runner – maybe he can get him first past the post.

Le Palmier (2) is the early favourite and deservedly so. Well placed by Gollan Racing again and Georgina Cartwright will claim 1.5 kilograms that will enhance his chances, but I just think the weight may still stop him this weekend.

Be warned if they go lickety split in front and the sectionals are fast the Kelly Schweida Racing trained Aheadofhistime (9) could upset them all at silly odds of $26 – Jimmy Orman again in the saddle.

Selections:

11 – Hearts Lifted
6 – Raging Pole
2 – Le Palmier
9 – Aheadofhistime

Race 8

A good sprint race here over 1200 metres.

I am declaring The Odyssey (1) after his out of character ordinary effort in the Weetwood last start. The stallion did not handle the track up there so forget the run. He loves this Doomben track with six solid wins here. The Schweida Racing stables have gone with an apprentice and a 3 kilogram claim this weekend to enhance his chances as well – Alex Patis takes the ride. He gets his chance to lead here again and with only 56 kilograms he looks a great chance at $5. Look for a dramatic form reversal is my tip!

Red Chase (8) was unlucky in the Weetwood racing first up and being beaten by an outsider Jadentom (5) after being well supported to win the race. He will be well suited here, already having two wins to his credit second up. Drawn well and to be ridden by Taylor Marshall, he looks the logical danger.

Jadentom (5) won his hometown feature sprint for trainer Lindsay Hatch with Andrew Mallyon aboard. They combine here again and could cause another upset in a strong field. He does go up sharply in the weights for that win at Toowoomba and that could be the only steadier to his chances here.

Grey Missile (10) is resuming here for the Toby & Trent Edmonds Racing team. He has a superb second up record. I liked his recent trial on his home track. Maybe with the speed on he could just finish off the race strong and surprise these more favoured runners.

Chris Munce Racing has Boomsara (3) who is second up here. Larry Cassidy in the saddle – another nice ride for him. This runner is well drawn and gets conditions to suit here this weekend. Maybe he can return to the winner’s stalls after a long period of outs – in fact 90 weeks since his last win.

Selections:

1 – The Odyssey
8 – Red Chase
10 – Grey Missile
3 - Boomsara
Rough chances – (4) Love You Lucy (9) Mr Marbellouz

Race 9

The last race of the day over 1350 metres at Class 6 level – another tough assignment.

Ziemba (6) is a Robert Heathcote Racing runner who is third up here this preparation and is looking for a hat trick of wins. The gelding will be ridden yet again by Stephanie Thornton and he has been freshened by the stable with four weeks since the last win.

Fisticuffs (11) will be searching to for another win for the Edmonds Racing team – Ben Thompson is riding this weekend with Ryan Maloney in Sydney to partner Alligator Blood. I think there will be bragging rights after the race if he lowers the colours of his partner’s mount (Ziemba) – Stephanie Thornton. I hope he will buy dinner if he wins!

This runner won here a month ago – to be fair he overcame some drama in the straight and when he was held up and had to cross heels so the win was full of merit and his chances must be respected here.

The stable mate is She Za Boss (15) to be ridden by Robbie Fradd. This mare has been racing consistently for Edmonds Racing and deserves a change of luck.

Beaufort Park (10) has won two in a row on his home track at the Gold Coast. Les Kelly trains this runner and despite his last win only being in a No Metro Win race down there – wow, did he come into the race strong late and then put the opposition to the sword. Travis Wolfgram retains the ride and I think he will be hard to hold out as the whips are cracking in the straight.

Love Struck (7), just not sure what I am thinking here – maybe one last run before a spell. I think he goes better across the road at Eagle Farm. If this race was there, I would think he was a genuine chance without the ludicrous $21 price on offer.

Selections:

6 – Ziemba
10 – Beaufort Park
11 – Fisticuffs
15 – She Za Boss
Rough chance – (7) Love Struck

WINNO V FLEMO

FLEMO destroyed WINNO last weekend – but he will be smarting when NSW give his QLD Maroons a thrashing in the coming month! Be sure to check the up to date and amended tips each Saturday morning on Facebook after any track changes and scratchings where I will post our selections and any late mail!
