WINNO'S WINNERS: DOOMBEN, OCTOBER 17, 2020

By Darren Winningham | Thursday, October 15, 2020

NB: As these selections were made prior to race-day please check for any changes to track conditions and for any scratchings on the day

This weekend we head back to DOOMBEN with the track rated “GOOD” and the rail is out 2 metres for the entire circuit.

Well what can I say – talk about Gilligan’s Island – Justin Huxtable and Adin Thompson all adrift at sea after a day of drama. They made it back to dry land and alas I had to buy my own fish and chips from the local store as they didn’t turn up with the fish they promised me for dinner! So glad that they are safe – just hope I get an invite on the next adventure!

This weekend The Everest is on in Sydney and the Caulfield Cup in Melbourne, which makes for a massive weekend of racing!

Race 1

A small field to start the day.

Gollan Racing has Sugar Boom (1) resuming from a 19-week spell. She recently won a barrier trial by 5 lengths – apprentice Georgina Cartwright will partner her here and she looks like the winner.

Mort Doyle (6) ran second in a trial on the same day but in a slower trial time. This runner is trained by Lauren Abbott and Andrew Mallyon will take the ride. The gelding could show up here.

Intimidating (8) is the runner that I would keep a watch on. Trained by Leigh Wanless and to be ridden by Adin Thompson, Intimidating debuted in Queensland with a solid win at Beaudesert last start. I am just wondering how much improvement is left here.

Selections:

1 – Sugar Boom
6 – Mort Doyle
2 – Niewand
8 – Intimidating

Race 2

Another tiny field.

Tony Gollan is represented solidly here again with Mass Destruction (1). A solid win last time out at Eagle Farm over 1400 metres. Baylee Nothdurft is aboard – hard to beat.

The Bryan and Daniel Guy training team is in purple patch now with winners each week lately. They train Clearance Sale (1) and he is shooting for a hat trick. He has been working well through the grades and Ben Thompson keeps his association with him.

Selections:

1 – Mass Destruction
2 – Clearance Sale
4 – Dzsenifer
5 – Poupee

Race 3

One of these tough Class 3 races that seems to turn up a different result each week.

I suppose I will follow the money from a fortnight ago with the Maryann Brosnan trained Montez (6) who was well supported last start at Eagle Farm second up. The mile was too far last start, he lost a plate and he just had no luck. Back to 1350 metre, a gear change with visors going on – looks a great chance. Robbie Fradd is aboard this weekend.

Chris Waller Racing on the Gold Coast has Mantelli (2) and Lubuk (5) in the race. Both have been performing well and must be respected.

Selections:

6 – Montez
2 – Mantelli
5 – Lubuk
3 – Wowsers

Race 4

The 2200 metres race for the day – YAY!

I think it is lunch time! See you after the race!

I think there may be an upset here – Chris Waller Racing has He Runs Away (5) and Kimpembe (6) in the race.

I am going out on a limb and will say that He Runs Away (5), who won last start at Eagle Farm, will not run a place this weekend!

I think the stable mate Kimpembe (6) looks progressive and, with three weeks between runs and Michael Cahill to ride, I just think this gelding is nicely placed and if he runs out the distance he is the one to beat.

Ethan Ensby from Northern NSW trains Torrens (4) who has been crying out for this distance. He gets conditions to suit this weekend and Brad Pengelly will ride. At $16 I think he is a genuine knock out chance.

Toby & Trent Edmonds train Fields of Yulong (8) who was well backed last start at Eagle Farm when defeated soundly by He Runs Away (5). He comes back in distance and gets a 1kg weight relief for that defeat. He looks better placed here at Doomben.

Fastnet Cyclone (1), who is on the quick back up after a solid effort last weekend, must be respected.

Selections:

6 – Kimpembe
4 – Torrens
8 – Fields Of Yulong
1 – Fastnet Cyclone

Race 5

An open affair this.

Explosive Quality (10), trained on the Gold Coast by Gillian Heinrich, has won her past two starts. I think that she is well placed here, down in the weights and with genuine speed in the race. With The Great Boombino (6) engaged here, look for Michael Cahill to let them fly in front, sit off them and then make his move and real them in late.

The Great Boombino (6) will be out in front for a long way with Stephanie Thornton aboard. The Goves Family who have a share in this mare will be cheering her on – hopefully, they will not go the early crow like they did a few weeks ago!

Oh Five Glory (4), trained by the father and son team of Peter and Will Hulbert, is on a quick back up after being nailed in a blanket finish last weekend. The 1050 metres was against her last weekend – look for a big improvement this weekend over 1200 metres. Maybe stable apprentice Adin Thompson will not be left “all at sea” and can find the winning post this weekend.

Selections:

10 – Explosive Quality
6 – The Great Boombino
4 – Oh Five Glory
7 – Mollys Rocking

Race 6

The first leg of the Quaddie this weekend over 1600 metres and it is a large field – play wide!

There is good speed in the race – something that is not always the case.

With that in mind I like the Chris Waller runner Prospectus (5) to carry on with his recent winning form with Luke Dittman aboard. He likes a genuine tempo and I think he will be suited again this weekend in this field. A fortnight between runs – a great chance!

Tony Gollan Racing has some good chances as well.

Seeingisbelieving (1), who led last start and just did not run out the 1830 metres at Eagle Farm, is coming back to a mile and, despite the large weight, I think there will be a better effort this weekend.

The stablemate is Nic Nat Nui (12) who is three weeks between runs again. The winkers go on and, despite stepping up in grade and Saturday company, he looks very well placed in this race. He is looking for a hat trick of wins here.

Trusty Lad (7), trained by Matt Kropp, gets back to a more suitable distance and will improve here. Larry Cassidy is aboard.

Selections:

5 – Prospectus
1 – Seeingisbelieving
12 – Nic Nat Nui
7 – Trusty Lad
Rough chances – (6) Stoked & (11) Don’t Stop

Race 7

Another open race here over the mile again.

Just take the field – there are some serial pests in this field – worse than ME!

I like Plitvice (9) from Robert Heathcote Racing to get back into the winner’s circle this weekend with Ben Thompson aboard. He drops in weight from his last start. He will race handy. He likes this track and he gets three weeks between runs. He looks good. He Is drawn well – do you get the picture yet? I am just trying to justify tipping him!

Glenall (1) resumes for a new stable here – Kelly Schweida Racing - after being beaten by around 4 lengths in the Group 1 Epsom last start at Randwick. To be fair he is probably the best credentialled runner in the field. Maybe with Jim Byrne being released from quarantine after his recent riding stint in NSW he can land a winner!

Steven O’Dea has Sabkhat (4) in the race with Justin Huxtable in the saddle. This horse gets around Doomben well and will find his own way home – Justin will not need to engage his flare to be seen here. Just give Sabkhat a few reminders in the straight, hold on tight and you may safely return to the winners’ stall.

Selections:

9 – Plitvice
1 – Glenall
4 – Sabkhat
5 – Top Prospect

Race 8

A No Metro Win race – they just keep getting harder.

Great Keppell (10) has been scratched from an earlier race to run here for Edmonds Racing. Jim Byrne has picked up the ride and I think that is a big bonus for this gelding. Last start he went to the line well on his home track on the Gold Coast. He is third up here and I expect a bold showing.

Heathcote Racing has Starvirgo (3) engaged. He was heavily backed last start at Eagle Farm – I would forgive him that run I do not think he coped on the Eagle Farm surface. With a little more give in the Doomben track he will be right in the race this weekend – Ben Thompson with another good chance here.

Royal Hale (6) was three weeks between runs last start and that may have told on him late when he just seemed to peak on his run. He will strip fitter for that effort and with the claim for Georgina Cartwright he gets in well here.

I think this is a good trifecta – just box the three top selections for a collect!

Selections:

10 – Great Keppell
3 – Starvirgo
6 – Royal Hale
2 - Fabulonh

Race 9

The last race of the day over 1200 metres and at Class 6 level – another tough assignment.

There is a heap of speed here – a few will be looking for the lead.

I am going for Edmonds Racing to finish the day on a high with Dream Master (8) who has drawn the rails with Michael Cahill aboard. Last start he was caught wide and never finished off the race and I think with the month freshen up he will be hard to beat here. I took some of the $19 on offer on Wednesday when the markets opened – he has been solidly supported into $9 in some markets.

Catesby (2) with Luke Dittman in the saddle put in an enormous effort last start at Toowoomba for trainer Grant Allard – back to Doomben, drawn well I think he will be right in this race.

Stampe (3) is resuming for Chris Munce Racing – despite the poor trial effort he could show up at good odds.

Do not overlook the runner right down the bottom here – Metson (13) who won two weeks ago at Eagle Farm. That effort was good enough for him to win again. Down on the minimum, on a track where he has performed well, he could cause an upset in the last race with Taylor Marshall to ride.

Selections:

8 – Dream Master
2 – Catesby
13 – Metson
3 – Stampe
Rough chance – (1) Awesome Pluck, (11) Mountbatten
