WINNO'S WINNERS: DOOMBEN, NOVEMBER 14, 2020

By Darren Winningham | Friday, November 13, 2020

DOOMBEN RACES – SATURDAY 14 NOVEMBER 2020

This weekend we stay at Doomben where the track rated “GOOD” and the rail is out 2.5 metres for the entire circuit. The track seems to be racing true with the regular racing on it. Last weekend every runner had every chance.

NB: As these selections were made prior to race-day please check for any changes to track conditions and for any scratchings on the day

Race 1

The two-year-old runners start off the day.

There is a raft of gear changes – too many to list here – but that may have some benefit to these youngsters! It is incredibly open – watch the market for any that are backed late.

Le Force (7) made his debut here three weeks ago – the run was even – got too far back and had little luck. The winkers go on this weekend for this Darryl Hansen runner. Look for an improvement. Luke Tarrant to ride – maybe he can give me the courtesy of saying “GO NSW” after QLD got thrashed on Wednesday night.

Chief Artie (1) is a Robert Heathcote Racing debutant who won a barrier trial last week at Eagle Farm very well. Adin Thompson remains on for the debut.

Ezekeil (6) will be ridden by Andrew Mallyon for Kacy Fogden. He fought on well at the Gold Coast when finishing second last time - has winkers this weekend.

Northern Water (3) is trained by Kelly Schweida who landed a massive plunge on the first starter last weekend when Miss Hipstar won after being backed from $26 to $5. Maybe this runner will meet with the same support and cause an upset.

Cannot get a line on the Chris Waller Racing runner here Conexy (2) who has been trialling nicely in Sydney – keep this runner safe.

Selections:

7 – Le Force
2 – Conexy
1 - Chief Artie
6 – Ezekeil
Rough chance – (3) Northern Waiter

Race 2

Not a race I can be interested in to be honest.

Let us go with the Matt Kropp runner Trusty Lad (9) who is fifth up after a year off the scene. He worked home well last start and goes up in distance this weekend and with the small field I think he will be given a great run by Ronnie Stewart.

The Waller Racing runner, He Runs Away (3), who had won two in a row before being sent to Sydney returns to Queensland. He has a super sprint and in this small field will be hard to beat again – Michael Cahill to take over this weekend.

Morton Fork (1) comes off some solid efforts in Sydney. Has a massive weight, but he is a proven performer at this level. Jim Byrne partners him this weekend.

Selections:

9 – Trusty Lad
3 – He Runs Away
1 – Morton Fork
5 – Happy Go Plucky

Race 3

Another small field over 1350 metres.

Edmonds Racing has Hard Labour (6) coming to the big smoke for the first time looking for a hat trick of wins.

Has been well supported since the markets opened and will sit just in behind the speed and should get the run of the race for mine – Robbie Fradd is up.

Countess De Galvez (2) is trained in Toowoomba by Mark Currie and I did think she could run a nice race first up. Her run was solid enough to suggest she will strip fitter here this weekend and could pose a long priced upset chance to the Edmond’s favourite.

Toomai (7) had no luck here on Melbourne Cup day – smaller field and has Larry Cassidy in the saddle this weekend – do not leave out of your calculations.

Selections:

6 – Hard Labour
2 – Countess De Galvez
7 – Toomai
8 – The Golden Hind

Race 4

A QTIS three-year-old event here over 1200 metres.

I cannot get out of my mind the all the way win of Kavak (1) at Doomben last start. Jumped went forward and made them all look second rate. Chris Munce trains this runner and Larry Cassidy is aboard again this weekend. He meets the opposition that he beat last start worst at the weights, but I cannot see the runners from that race turning the tables on him.

The untapped runner is the Steven O’Dea and Matt Hoysted trained Dominant King (4) who has been sent out noticeably short priced in his two career starts. He won his maiden last start at Ipswich and was impressive. Steps up to Saturday company this weekend and Ben Thompson stays aboard.

Selections:

1 – Kavak
4 – Dominant King
3 – Jetty
2 – Xerri

Race 5

An open affair here over 1200 metres. QTIS three-year-old race for the girls.

Heathcote Racing has the MiRunner owned Dusty Tycoon (2) in the race. She is second up for a massive bunch of owners. She was sensational first up and was only run down late after being in front the entire way. Alex Patis has been booked for the ride this weekend and her 3-kilogram claim brings this runner sensationally into the race.

I have a massive respect for the NSW Northern Rivers runner trained by Stephen Lee – Freya’s Cloak (3). She won the two-year-old race over the 2020 Grafton Carnival. The recent trial at Grafton was sensational and Ben Thompson has been booked for the ride. She is $21 and will give you a wonderful site here.

Chris Anderson Racing has a stable star in Plutocrat (1) resuming here as well. This runner raced and performed at Listed level last preparation – there is no reason why she cannot resume here and sit behind the speed and fly home late and slay the opposition. Michael Cahill in the saddle - he has wonderful hands and rates them well – will suit her style of racing. My top three selections would be a nice, boxed trifecta.

Selections:

2 – Dusty Tycoon
3 – Freya’s Cloak
1 – Plutocrat
5 – Jubai Pride

Race 6

First leg of the Quaddie. A class 3 plate with several scratchings already.

Tony Gollan is well represented here with Garibaldi (8) who resumes here after winning a recent trial. Looks well placed in this grade and a nice ride for Ben Thompson.

Hidden Hail (4) has won his past two starts. This runner is trained by Barry Lockwood and has never been out of the money in five career starts. Sean Cormack has ridden him to victory in the past two victories and he is aboard again as Hidden Hail steps up in grade this weekend. I really think that if the Gollan runner is not trained to the minute that this runner represents wonderful value at $6.

Rucca (5) ran off the track last start – suffered an injury and well maybe you could forgive that run – I said MAYBE.

Selections:

8 – Garibaldi
4 – Hidden Hail
5 – Rucca
2 – Iced

Race 7

This is an open race – over the mile.

Prospectus (8) has been scratched and will race instead at Newcastle in race 5 – maybe worth following this runner.

Kedah (5) was impressive winning on Melbourne Cup day at Doomben when she sprinted well and disposed of the opposition. This is a tougher assignment this weekend, but she looks the best of a bad bunch.

Alderman (7) led last start and was swamped late here over a mile. He will go forward again and Stephanie Thornton may be able to get away with some cheap sectionals in front and make them look silly late.

Willo Tito (4) had some support last start. She is trained by Michael Costa who landed a massive plunge two weeks ago when Seentoomany was backed from $26 to $5.50 and got the chocolates – keep this runner safe is my tip!

Selections:

5 – Kedah
7 – Alderman
4 – Willo Tito
2 – Plitvice

Race 8

Niedorp (7) resumed with a solid win three weeks ago. She has drawn wide but has some good early toe to get across and take up the lead. Georgina Cartwright’s claim will enhance her chances and she is the favourite for the race. I am just concerned that she may not be able to burn the candle at both ends and may be found floundering late.

With that in mind I am tipping the John Wigginton Rockhampton flyer to come to town and make her presence felt here – Better Reflection (10) has been trialling sensationally on her home track. The blinkers and tongue tie come off and there is no synthetic hood filler as well. She must be going well to have all those gear changes and come to town to race first up. Matthew McGillivray takes the ride here. Better Reflection has a wonderful first up record with three wins from four starts and has a great record at Doomben. There is $15 on offer in some places – get on each way.

Baller (2) – is this runner named after Josh Fleming – and the rest of you whining Queenslanders? This runner has come up from the NSW Waller yards and has been working and trialling well at his new home base on the Gold Coast. He has some solid form first up and resumes after a lengthy spell. Maybe punters will be left “balling” if Luke Dittman can cause an upset here.

Chris Anderson trains Boomtown Lass (3). I normally tip her first up as she has a tremendous record when she races fresh. The recent trial was good. She has great form at Doomben and has drawn well – really there is no knock on this runner other than she has her share of weigh to carry this weekend.

Selections:

10 – Better Reflection
7 – Niedorp
2 – Baller
3 – Boomtown Lass

Race 9

The last race – the Keith Noud – at Listed level.

The best race in recent weeks held in Queensland and a massively competitive field here.

If you find the trifecta and the first 4 you will be taking a truck load of cash home – well, that is if the TAB can stay open this weekend!

Chris Munce Racing trains Stampe (16) and he will be ridden by Sean Cormack. He resumed with a great run first up. His form second up is solid and with no weight on his back and drawn perfectly I expect him to run boldly at around $18. He was particularly good last preparation in good class races – he may just cause an upset in this last race of the day.

The first emergency is Profit (17) from Chris Anderson’s yards. This runner is all class. Solid form first up – great win/strike rate and a breathtaking trial win last week. That would all suggest he is ready to return to racing and have a wonderful campaign. He does get back, but there is some solid speed that should cart him nicely into the race – Matthew McGillivray is aboard this weekend.

Catesby (12) won last start after drawing well and being given the run of race from Luke Dittman. Tegan Harrison takes the reins this weekend. He has drawn barrier 3 and will be given every chance racing in behind the speed in this race.

Jonker (10) has always promised to be a stakes winner all his career but just has not lived up to those expectations. I have always thought he is an above average runner. He is now trained by Tony Gollan and resumes from an 18-week spell. The trial last week suggests that he will run a bold race first up - $25 on offer as well and Jim Byrne to ride.

The Matthew Hoysted and Steven O’Dea runner Scallopini (3) has been well supported in the early markets – keep your eye on the market regarding this runner. He did race well in a trail that Krone (8) won recently, striding out nicely late to finish second.

Krone (8) another Gollan Racing runner – won that recent trial. If there is any rain late on Saturday (there are some rumours we may get some) this runner will enjoy the softer conditions. Follow him after this run as his second up form is quite good normally.

Soxagon (9) is trained by Mark Currie. He will be ridden by Luke Tarrant – He may bookend the program with any luck! This runner resumed over 1110 metres and flew home – the distance was too short. Now he steps up to 1200 metres here and he is second up where he has won two races previously – another long-priced runner at $18.

There is some value here punters – play wide and win a motza!

Selections:

16 – Stampe
17 – Profit
12 – Catesby
10 – Jonker
Rough chances – (3) Scallopini (8) Krone (9) Soxagon

WINNO V FLEMO

FLEMO got WINNO last weekend. The battel continues. WINNO has bragging rights after NSW thrashed QLD in COVID free NSW in Origin on Wednesday night. I think I was robbed with my man of the match selection last week so I am staying solid – James Tedesco to win it on the hallow QLD turf in Origin 3 Be sure to check the up to date and amended tips each Saturday morning on Facebook after any track changes and scratchings where I will post our selections and any late mail!
