DOOM OCT 14 - NESTING SCORES ON DEBUT

By Graham Potter | Wednesday, October 14, 2009

Doomben, October 14, 2009.
Track - Good 3. Rail - out 10m.
Maiden Plate (3yo C & G - Set Weights) - 1040m. Time: 1-01.07.
1 Nesting; 2 Brigadoon Jack; 3 Falls Creek.

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Liam Birchley: “We got him in New Zealand for $20000. The exchange rate was good at the time. He is very small and I just gave him time to grow up a bit. He was in and out a few times, but I just sort of waited until he was a little bit more mature. He should get better as he gets older. He’s being showing us something but, as I say, we just gave him a bit of time.

Jockey Stathi Katsidis: “You’ll see when he hit the front he was looking around and that. He was just having a little look. First start in a race it was really good ... but, like I say, he was green.”

Nesting dislodged Katsidis soon after finishing the race. Katsidis explained what happened.

“He just looked at the crossing when I went over it the first time. It was something he hadn’t seen before. Then after we finished the race he saw it for the second time and he didn’t like it then either. I just relaxed on him and he got me off balance. I was going to end up underneath him so that is why I held on to him and pulled myself out from underneath.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Nesting): 1.65 out to 1.70 in to 1.50.
The winner was the favourite.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Trainer D. Murphy was fined $50 for presenting Joe The Plumber to the enclosure without a tongue-tie, which was part of that horse's normal gear. All fear jumped away awkwardly and shifted out, making contact with the hind quarters of Brigadoon Champ (L. Rolls).

All fear (B. Stewart) pulled hard in the early and middle stages of the race. Approaching the 600m, Mitayden (J. Byrne), which was laying in, had to be steadied off the heels of Brigadoon Jack, which shifted out. All Fear raced greenly when placed under pressure in the straight.

After passing the winning post, Nesting shied, resulting in S. Katsidis being dislodged. A post-race veterinary examination of Nesting failed to reveal any significant abnormalities. S. Katsidis was subsequently examined by the doctor and cleared to fulfil his remaining engagements.

When questioned, L. Cassidy explained that Joe The Plumber was under pressure upon straightening and failed to respond to his riding. As a result he did not ride the gelding out over the final 100m. A post-race veterinary examination of Joe The Plumber revealed a small abrasion on the muzzle.
