WINNO'S WINNERS: DOOMBEN, 19 DECEMBER, 2020

By Darren Winningham | Friday, December 18, 2020

DOOMBEN RACES – SATURDAY 19 DECEMBER 2020

This weekend we are back at Doomben where the track is rated “SOFT” and the rail is out 3.0 metres for the entire circuit.

This is my last set of selecvtions before Xmas – so on behalf of WINNO I would like to wish all the regular readers and their family and friends a Merry Xmas – hopefully, Santa comes early with a few winners below.

NB: As these selections were made prior to race-day please check for any changes to track conditions and for any scratchings on the day.

Race 1

In recent weeks horses from far North QLD have come to town and won. Derulo (5) debuts here for new trainer John Smerdon on the Gold Coast. He has an impressive 4 win and 1 second record from 5 starts. Loves to jump and run and Ryan Wiggins has the ride. Looks well placed here as he has raced well on rain affected surfaces.

Tracy May (3), Gollan Racing’s representative, has been freshened for four weeks since she ran in a strong Class 3 race at the Sunshine Coast last start. Ryan Maloney has a wonderful strike rate with the stable and I think she will improve here.

Mort Doyle (1) is up in weight, but his last start effort was strong for trainer Lauren Abbott. Michael Rodd has been booked for the ride and maybe he can get this runner to get past the post first this weekend.

King of The Desert (6) is trained by Ben Ahrens and will be ridden by Luke Dittman. He is second up and does enjoy wet tracks.

Selections:

5 – Derulo
3 – Tracy May
1 – Mort Doyle
6 – King of The Desert

Race 2

A field over 1650 metres.

An even field – Picka Plum (4) won here last start at the track and distance. He has an excellent second and third up record – this weekend he is third up – Sean Cormack takes the ride here.

Edmonds Racing is well represented with Mount Tabora (3) and Green Jacket (6) – both have chances.

Mount Tabora (3) was storming home last start over 1350 metres – he steps up to the mile and Andrew Mallyon retains the ride. He looks the one to beat if he can handle the soft track. The stable mate Green Jacket (6) does race well on soft surfaces - maybe he can improve with Jim Byrne aboard.

So Dapper (7) is trained by John Symons and Sheila Laxon and will be partnered again by Ronnie Stewart. With some speed engaged here I expect him to take a sit and will be strong over the final 200 metres.

Selections:

3 – Mount Tabora
4 – Picka Plum
7 – So Dapper
6 – Green Jacket

Race 3

A benchmark 75 race with a few genuine chances.

Smart N Sexy (13) gets in well in this grade resumes from a 29-week spell and has been trialling well for Edmonds Racing. Robbie Fradd rides her here.

The Les Ross Racing team has Mishani Blossom (8) going around this week with Tegan Harrison to ride. She is undefeated third up each preparation and represents amazing value at $21 in some markets. Her run when she raced fiercely behind Lashoni was good enough for this race.

Gin ‘N’ Bitters won last start. She is trained by Billy Healey. Look I love to see Billy winning a race anywhere, but I think the big weight this weekend and the extra distance may find her out. Robbie Fradd rode her last start, and he has opted to ride the Edmonds runner this weekend. They have gone for Andrew Mallyon to ride her and she will not lose nothing with him aboard.

Snow Valley (6) could be a rough chance here to fill a place as will Veranes (1) coming off a last start win at the Sunshine Coast with Luke Dittman to ride her again.

Selections:

13 – Smart N Sexy
8 – Mishani Blossom
5 – Gin N Bitters
6 – Snow Valley
Rough chance – (1) Veranes

Race 4

Tough race this one. An Open race over 2020 metres.

Tony Gollan versus Chris Waller it looks like here – they both have three runners in the field. Then Godolphin and James Cummings have snuck one into the field as well.

I think one of the Gollan runners may get the cash – Get Stuck In (5) looked great last start when he flew home late just to miss in the race that was won by So You Win (2). I think he will reverse that decision this weekend as he meets him much better at the weights for the narrow defeat. Ryan Maloney is in the saddle.

Phaistos (4) is the Cummings runner to be ridden by Glen Boss. He looks like he will get the distance – but just a question on him running out the distance for mine.

So You Win (2) has been great putting two wins in three starts on the board for the Chris Waller Racing team. Luke Dittman stays aboard – this runner carries weight well – again just the track may test him this weekend.

Magnufighter (3) will be partnered by Brad Stewart – this runner loves wet tracks – keep safe.

Selections:

5 – Get Stuck In
4 – Phaistos
2 – So You Win
3 – Magnufighter

Race 5

Not a big fan of these class 3 races. But here goes nothing.

I like my top two selections – you can bet on Magic Conqueror (9) and save on Eeloh (14).

Magic Conqueror (9) was solid last preparation and resumes here for the Kelly Schweida Racing team with Michael Rodd to ride. Drawn nicely and he will race on the speed – he will be right in this.

Desleigh Forster trains the runner I like – Eelloh (14). She likes wet track and always goes well second up. Mark Du Plessis to ride her this weekend. She resumed with a good effort in a Listed race first up and drops back to Class 3 and gets in well at the weights. At $19 she looks great each way value.

Lot’s Wife (15) is another Edmonds Racing runner with good prospects. Only lightly raced, she resumed with a solid win at her home track – down in weight she will go well.

Miss Penfold (16) is the stable mate of Magic Conqueror (9) from Kelly Schweida stables. She worked herself well into the race last start before being hampered on the turn which basically took her out of the race. Matthew McGillivray rides – if she handles the conditions, she could cause an upset.

Hail Manhattan (3) from the Hulbert Racing team won last start when well supported on the Gold Coast – he could make his presence felt here with stable apprentice Adin Thompson to ride.

Malawi Gold (4) won at the Gold Coast as well last start for Matthew Dunn Racing. The wide barrier and the soft track may be his drama here this weekend.

Selections:

14 – Eelloh
9 – Magic Conqueror
15 – Lot’s Wife
16 – Miss Penfold
Rough chance – (3) Hail Manhattan (4) Malawi Gold (8) Love Express

Race 6

First leg of the Quaddie.

Trent & Toby Edmonds have another nice chance here – Global Citizen (11). Has resumed with two solid wins from a spell and so is looking for a hat trick with Robbie Fradd to ride. He is only lightly raced and faces his biggest challenge here– the price is short when you consider he is looking at his first metro Saturday run.

La Jument (13) loves wet tracks – possibly has webbed feet so the conditions may suit here this weekend for trainer Shaun Dwyer (Jnr). He has drawn well, and Brad Stewart will be looking to cause an upset here and get this runner home. He is only a lightly raced seve-year-old – but he looks a definite chance here.

Kateru (9) could fill the last of the placings. He resumed for the Chris Anderson yards. He is an ex-Godolphin runner and has some ability. Second up here with Larry Cassidy in the saddle.

Selections:

11 – Global Citizen
13 – La Jument
9 – Kateru
7 – Raging Pole

Race 7

This is an open race – just play wide.

Ruuca (16) from Edmonds Racing was barnstorming last start with his win here over 1050 metres. His gear changes clearly worked, his mind was on the job and he showed the true potential that has been tagged on him. Robbie Fradd remains aboard this weekend. If he performs like he did last start he will be difficult to beat again.

I have gone for some value with the Gollan Racing runner – Say Heya (14).

Resuming here for the stable with Glen Boss aboard, I think she represents value. She does race well on soft tracks and is drawn nicely to sit in behind the likely speed engaged in the race. She does go better normally second up – but the way she won the barrier trial two weeks ago would suggest that she will sprint well here. With $7 on offer I like her each way.

Racecourse Road (6) was great leading all the way last start at silly odds. Ronnie Stewart remains on him this weekend. Dropping back in distance should not hinder his chances – but barrier 14 may prove a challenge. Has not won on a heavy track – but does like soft surfaces.

I have respect for Gypsy Toff (4) as well from the Tom Button yards. Luke Tarrant to ride this one. She has solid wet track form and the run in the Listed Tatts Classic last start over 1200 was particularly good. She goes better over these shorter distances in my opinion – so look for a dramatic improvement this weekend.

There are plenty of roughies – Defence Missile (13) at around $51 will come right into this race if we have rain and the track turns into a bog.

Selections:

14 – Say Heya
16 – Ruuca
6 – Racecourse Road
4 – Gypsy Toff
Rough chance – (8) Persuader, (9) Goodonya Sonya (13), Defence Missile

Race 8 GOLD EDITION PLATE (Listed)

The feature race is over 1200 metres. At set weights as well – will sort some of them out.

Gollan Racing has a nice filly here in Isotope (11). A sensational win first up in the Mode Plate – breathtaking. Ryan Maloney keeps the ride. She has drawn well and has two wins from two starts on soft tracks. She looks a good thing. In saying that she meets some stiff opposition this weekend.

Away Game (9) from the Ciaron Maher & David Eustace stables normally needs a run before she is at her peak. She has no dramas on soft tracks – Glen Boss has a wonderful association with her. She is going to be better for the run in my opinion.

Rogue Rocker (8) from the John Smerdon yards on the Gold Coast stepped up to Listed company straight from a maiden win last start and acquitted himself well. He was well supported on that occasion – this weekend Brad Stewart is in the saddle.

Thunder Mania (4) is trained by John Symons & Sheila Laxon. He resumed flashing home late in the Winning Rupert Plate a fortnight ago. He is currently $31 in the markets and has Ronnie Stewart to ride.We all seen how good he is at landing a long-priced winner - in the last race last weekend that was a $116 chance on the TAB. He could cause an upset – he loves this track and distance and goes well on wet surfaces.

Plutocrat (14) from the Chris Anderson Racing stables – well there was something amiss last start when she over-raced and faded out in the race won by Isotope (11). There are a plethora of gear changes this weekend and Michael Cahill is booked to ride. I think forgive that run and maybe have something each way at $61 on this one.

Selections:

11 – Isotope
9 – Away Game
8 – Rogue Rocker
4 – Thunder Mania
Rough chance – (14) Plutocrat

Race 9 Lough Neagh Stakes (Listed)

The last race – with some sign of storms this weekend – maybe we will get wet and soggy – let us hope not!

Another open race with some good horses in this.

It is hard to go past the effort of the Desleigh Forster trained Red Chase (6) who tried so hard when narrowly beaten by The Harrovian last start. He looked the winner until the massive horse from North QLD – now trained by Edmonds Racing - loomed up and went past him. There was nothing wrong with that effort and he deserves a change of luck this weekend.

Phantom Falcon (15) was also first up when he sat off the speed when Racecourse Road (race 7) beat him. This runner is trained by Kacy Fodgen and I think this weekend he will probably let Epic Girl (12) lead and sit off the speed. Michael Hellyer has had some good success on this ex-Hong Kong runner with 4 rides – 2 wins – 2 placings. He is drawn better this weekend and he also goes down in the weights with the conditions of this race. He poses a blow out chance for punters here at $21.

Soxagon (11) was heavily backed last start when soundly defeated by The Harrovian. Mark Currie must be getting desperate to get this runner back to his old form – many gear changes this weekend and he has engaged veteran jockey Glen Boss to attempt to change his luck. He did work home well last start and was beaten only under 2 lengths. If the gear changes work and Bossy can get him to race generously, he will win this.

I was on Outback Barbie (4) last start. She raced well fresh – just concerned this weekend second up and a wet track – seems there are a few things against her. But Michael Rodd has stuck with her – he must think there was some improvement left in her on her first up run.

It could be possible to see BOSS v RODD in the final 50 metres in this race – who will have bragging rights this week!

River Racer (8) is a genuine chance if the rain comes and the track chops up – a genuine each way chance on a wet track at around $101. Bobby El-Issa comes to QLD to ride this runner for Les Ross Racing.

Tambo’s Mate (3) should not be overlooked as well. Stuart Kendrick would have been happy with his last start effort in the George Moore (Group 3) where he was drawn wide, went forward and was used up to cross and could not do it at both ends of the race – maybe they may ride him quieter this weekend from another wide barrier – barrier 13.

Selections:

6 – Red Chase
15 – Phantom Falcon
11 – Soxagon
4 – Outback Barbie
Rough chances – (3) Tambo’s Mate (8), River Racer (12) Epic Girl

Jockey’s Challenge

It is a three way go this weekend – Ryan Maloney, Glen Boss and Robbie Fradd. If Edmonds Racing have a HUGE day Fradd will win easily. Maybe a sneaky saver on Glen Boss.
