The Tony Gollan trained Sugar Boom tuned the fifth race at the Gold Coast … the Gold Coast Open, a 900m dash … into a one-horse procession, dictating events from start to finish without ever looking in any danger of defeat.

Michael Rodd jumped the four-year-old daughter of Spirit Of Boom into the leading line out of the gates and, from there, she had the race result fully under her control.

Sugar Boom has had a lightly raced season … this was only her fourth start as a four-year-old, but she still had the form on the board to look the part here having won two and being placed third in the Listed Bribie Handicap in her last three starts.

“She is great, you know. We worried about the weather all week because she doesn’t like really rain effected tracks,” said trainer Tony Gollan. “but when this track was rated a six this morning and there was no rain around and then, as it got to a five, the confidence just sky-rocketed,”.

“She is a really quick filly over this short course. She has won up to 1200m as we know, but she is a really, quick filly and quick horses win these 900m races. They are specialist horses these 900m race winners and she is the right sort of horse for a race like this.

“I know the barrier looked to be a bit messy, but I was never really worried. I didn’t think anyone had her gate speed. She is just so fast. She made light work of that (barrier) in the first furlong.

“She crossed them so well she was even able to get a breather.

“Great owners … the Kurtz’s. They have been with me now for so long. They bred this filly and couldn’t sell her. We got to train her and look at her now!

“She is a stakes winner and she’ll have a welcome spot on a broodmare band someday but, for the interim, we’ll worry about winning races.”
