FISTCUFFS IN A COME FROM BEHIND VICTORY

By Graham Potter | Saturday, January 9, 2021

Glen Boss going high in the saddle and poking his tongue out at the photographers can only mean one thing. He has added another winner to list long list of successes … and that indeed was the case in the last race at the Gold Coast where Boss brought the Toby and Trent Edmonds trained Fisticuffs to a come-from-behind victory.

The ‘bit of fun’ as Boss called it, generated a positive response from the crowd, such as it was under Covid-19 restrictions, and certainly ensured that proceedings were livened up.

Fisticuffs was a long way back early. Boss stuck towards the inside when negotiating the home turn before switching out around heels, getting into the clear and motoring home at an impressive rate of knots which carried him to victory with something to spare … a notable outcome when considering from how far back he had launched his run.

‘We all know he has got a lot of ability … but he’s got tricks too and can be a bit shifty at times,” said co-trainer Trent Edmonds. “It was a great ride. Got up on the inside of a couple, saved a bit of ground, cut the corner and came from a long way back.

“That’s the real horse. That’s what he can do. He can give it to them … and Glen got the crowd going absolutely crackers.

“Glen picked up the ride after Ryan Maloney couldn’t make the weight. That’s another thing too … the horse was getting down in the weights which helps because he is not overly big.”

And Glen Boss’ view of the race?

“He is one of those horses who doesn’t win out of turn because of his racing pattern,” said Boss. “If they go slow in front, he is obviously have to do it tough. They went quick enough for him here and he was sucked into the race at the right time.

“He obviously is always going to have that finishing burst, but the outcome is just tempo related for him.”
