WINNO'S WINNERS: DOOMBEN, 23 JANUARY, 2021

By Darren Winningham | Thursday, January 21, 2021

DOOMBEN RACES – SATURDAY 23 JANUARY 2021

This weekend we are back at DOOMBEN with the track rated “SOFT”. The rail is in the true position for the entire circuit. The track should dry out with some warm weather forecast over the next few days.

NB: As these selections were made prior to race-day please check for any changes to track conditions and for any scratchings on the day.

Race 1

The two-year old’s start off the day.

Open field here with many form lines that are difficult to line up.

Mishani Enchanted (10) went around in the lead up to the Magic Millions in the race won by Swift Witness. Forgive the run – was too far back could not make ground. Look for the Les Ross Racing runner to be full of confidence this weekend from barrier 1 with Chris Caserta to ride.

Jackson On Time (2) is from the Scott Morrisey stables on the Gold Coast. Amazing debut run on the Gold Coast when beaten by Finance Tycoon. Jim Byrne remains aboard – I would have had him on top, but barrier 14 may be a drama.

Rubiquitous (5), a nice Rubick gelding from the Chris Anderson yards, won on debut at the Sunshine Coast. Nice effort and looks like he is progressive but this field will test him. Brad Stewart is in the saddle.

A big watch on Hamlet Von Snitzel (7) from the Natalie McCall yards on the Sunshine Coast. He has won both of his trials at home. There are some big wraps on him and, making his debut here in town, Natalie must have a big opinion. Tiffani Brooker has ridden him to success in both trials and remains on him for his first race start. She will be looking for her first metro win in a while – GOOD LUCK TIFFANI!

Mystic Gem (11) from the Kris Lees Racing team has some big wraps on her as well - makes her debut here and has a good barrier. The unraced two could easily salute here.

Watch for any market moves in the lead up to this race.

Selections:

10 – Mishani Enchanted
2 – Jackson On Time
5 – Rubiquitous
3 – Portobello Road
Rough chance – (7) Hamlet Von Snitzel and (11) Mystic Gem

Race 2

A small field of only seven runners here over 1600 metres.

Kris Lees Racing and Andrew Mallyon combine here with Ligulate (2) who won two starts ago over the track and distance. Looks a safe bet.

Love Express (7) is the logical danger trained by Gary Duncan and to be ridden by Robbie Fradd. He was beaten a fortnight ago at the Gold Coast by Yao Dash and battled on well – just the mile may test this runner.

Zofonic Dancer (5), trained by Robert Heathcote and with Taylor Marshall aboard, looks the likely leader and at $34 could run them into the ground – do not overlook this runner.

Selections:

2 – Ligulate
7 – Love Express
5 – Zofonic Dancer
3 – Prometheus

Race 3

Another mile race.

Chris Munce trains Smart Meteor (7) with Larry Cassidy to ride. I just think he is well placed here and, with three weeks between runs, he will go well.

Hail Manhattan (5), a Peter & Will Hulbert trained runner, has been going good without much luck. Probably deserved a win next to his name in any of his past three starts but has been unlucky. Michael Rodd will be looking to change his luck here this weekend.

Barney’s Law (2) is a Mark Currie runner. Bobby El-Issa is aboard here. Bobby has been riding sensationally in the past month. This runner is looking for a hat trick of wins for the stable.

Terrius (4) looks for three in a row as well. Sears Racing have elected to claim three kilograms with Leah Kilner to ride. This runner will lead. Out in front a low weight – maybe too hard to run down.

Steve Tregea’s runner Champagne Aunty (12) is a rough chance.

Selections:

7 – Smart Meteor
5 – Hail Manhattan
2 – Barney’s Law
4 – Terrius
Rough chance – (12) Champagne Aunty

Race 4

Open race over 1200 metres.

Peter and Will Hulbert train another nice chance here in Oh Five Glory (10). She does not win out of turn, however, she looks ideally placed this weekend in this grade with Taylor Marshall to ride. Could be a unique race to race city double for the Hulbert Racing team.

Good Chat (7) was very good behind Boomnova at the Gold Coast a fortnight ago. A repeat of that effort and the run where he was gallant in defeat when narrowly beaten by Shooting For Gold will see him go close here. He is trained by David Vandyke and Jim Byrne will take the ride.

Garibaldi (1) is the early market favourite from the Gollan Racing, coming off two recent wins. Michael Rodd to ride for the first time. He will suit this gelding as he just needs to be ridden out from the gate and then set up a tempo to suit so he can outlast them late.

Brazen Dynamo (9) is a Lindsay Hatch trained mare who has won her past two starts as well. Comes to the big smoke to test the waters! They have opted for apprentice Sheriden Tomlinson to partner her this weekend. She will probably lead this field – the 3-kilogram claim gets her in nicely. It is great to see Sheriden back in the saddle after a recent injury. Good luck mate!

Selections:

10 – Oh Five Glory
7 – Good Chat
1 – Garibaldi
9 – Brazen Dynamo
Rough chances – (3) Getyourgreyon & (12) Ready Babe

Race 5

QTIS race here over 1200 metres.

The Kelly Schweida trained Batangas Entry (3) has been backed since markets open from $7 to $4.60 – Jim Byrne to ride. Comes off Listed races back to QTIS level – must be a chance.

Derulo (1) is third up here for the new stable – just seems to have improved with each start. Maybe this is the weekend where Ryan “Wiggo” Wiggins can get him past the post first and have a massive smile on the way back to the winner’s stalls!

Tick Tock Boom (6) has been “ticking” over nicely for David Vandyke. Does handle wet tracks and Michael Rodd to ride. He has always been racing in some nice company. Last start he went back to a Class 1 race at his home track on a heavy track and just could not real in the leaders.

Steven O’Dea and Matthew Hoysted have He Knows (9) in the race with Stephanie Thornton aboard. This lightly raced gelding has always shown he has some ability and resumed at a midweek meeting here a fortnight ago with a super effort racing home very strongly late to win. Up in grade this weekend, but one that certainly warrants respect and is weighted well against some of his rivals.

Selections:

3 – Batangas Entry
1 – Derulo
9 – He Knows
6 – Tick Tock Boom
Rough chance – (8) Criminal Defence

Race 6

First leg of the Quaddie. This is a tough race.

Trent & Toby Edmonds have Satine (8) in the race. Robbie Fradd to ride. This is the runner that was syndicated through a Gold Coast Turf Club promotion with six lucky owners being chosen to race a horse. She has posted two career wins and won $47,000 in prizemoney so far. If she can win this race, she will nearly double her stakes with the prize money for this race being $42,700 for the winner. I am sure the owners will be at the track to see her race and hopefully celebrate if she can salute.

Gollan Racing has three runners engaged and I can make a case for all of them. There is a big chance he could trifecta the race with Bleu Zebra (2), Microwave Jenny (5) and Niccis Spirit (10).

I have settled on the latter two as my selections for this race. I think Niccis Spirit (10) will have derived some benefit from her effort first up at Ipswich on a track that she didn’t seem to race all that generously on. Forgive that run and look for an improved result here at Doomben with Michael Rodd aboard.

Microwave Jenny (5) is coming off a nice effort at the Gold Coast last start – too far back on a day where on pace runners had some distinct benefits. I think back at Doomben she should race better – Jim Byrne retains the ride.

Toorooloo (6) from David Vandyke’s yards may cause an upset here. She is second up here with Brad Stewart to ride her.

No Laughing Matter (1) has won her past two starts at Taree – makes her debut in Queensland for Kris Lees Racing. Should not be underrated here.

Selections:

10 – Niccis Spirit
5 – Microwave Jenny
6 – Toorooloo
1 – No Laughing Matter
Rough chance – (2) Bleu Zebra & (8) Satine

Race 7

This is an open race – just play wide – plus, it’s the distance race for the meeting over 2000 metres.

Willo Titto (4) is on the quick back up after racing last weekend on Magic Millions day when defeated by Paradee. Dropping back in class – Brad Stewart to ride and trained by Michael Costa – she looks a great each way chance.

North Afrika (2) has been very consistent and has posted two consecutive wins for Gold Coast trainer John Smerdon – will be ridden again by Ryan Wiggins.

So Dapper (8) ran second last weekend at the Magic Millions as well in the race won by Paradee – logic says if I put Willo Titto (4) on top I must give this runner a chance.

Makedon (11) is a Gary Duncan runner working through the grades nicely and is a runner who could cause an upset coming to the big smoke for his first start here with Robbie Fradd aboard. Only lightly raced I think he will get the trip, so he must be respected.

Selections:

4 – Willo Titto
2 – North Afrika
8 – So Dapper
11 – Makedon

Race 8

Looking for some value here with the Ed O’Rourke trained Maslow (10) resuming for his new stable after a 36-week spell. Jake Bayliss is in the saddle – a recent trial win suggests that he is forward enough to bother the judge here this weekend. On the minimum, and with $12 on offer, he is a good each way ticket. Looking back through his form he ran a slashing second to Soxagon last preparation – a repeat of that effort will see him put this lot away.

Goodonya Sonya (4) has some solid efforts at Doomben – Mark Du Plessis rides for Lindsay Gough. She normally races well fresh and I think she is a big chance.

Socialising (8) drew wide last start – forgive that effort.

She Za Boss (9) for the Edmonds Racing stables was scratched last weekend from the Gold Coast. She resumes from an 18 week spell and did have a solid trial win at the Gold Coast a fortnight ago. Robbie Fradd rides for the stable.

Selections:

10 – Maslow
4 – Goodonya Sonya
8 – Socialising
9 – She Za Boss

Race 9

The last race – with some hot weather on the cards – WINNO will be sweaty! (HRO says … too much information).

Another open field to face the starter.

My top two selections are coming back from 1400 metres to 1200 metres and they will go better over the shorter distance – that’s Roman Aureus (11) and Baroda (12).

Roman Aureus (11) is a Brian Wakefield trained runner – Larry Cassidy has a great record on this runner.

Baroda (12) is an Edmonds Racing runner who is dropping back in distance – he is third up here this weekend and Andrew Mallyon takes the ride. He should race a few pairs back behind the leader and the race tempo looks ideal for him.

Desert Lord (1) is racing very well and drops back in class after racing in the Buffering last start. Stephanie Thornton won the last race at the Gold Coast last weekend – can she do it again here this week?

Angus The Black (7) – overlook the run at Eagle Farm where he had not much luck in the running and I am not certain he races best on that track.

Let’s Party Marty (4) comes off solid wins from a spell for Lindsay Hatch. Bobby El-Issa keeps the ride – maybe one that has been overlooked in the markets.

Selections:

12 – Baroda
11 – Roman Aureus
1 – Desert Lord
7 – Angus The Black
Rough chances – (4) Let’s Party Marty
