THORNTON LANDS A TREBLE AT EAGLE FARM

By Graham Potter | Saturday, February 6, 2021

Jamie Kah is dominating the chase for Melbourne Jockey’s Premiership chase … and she smashed them again at Caulfield yesterday riding a treble at the C F Orr meeting where she extended her already formidable lead in the Premiership.

At the same time, about 1800km to the north, Stephanie Thornton landed a treble of her own at Eagle Farm in Brisbane where she continues to surf the wave of success she caught soon after relocating to Queensland.

Thornton’s opened her score when she got the Matthew Dunn trained Devine Grey ($6) home in the second race on the card.

Devine Grey set an easy tempo but was taken on and headed in the straight by the $2.60 favourite Watch The Cat. The latter held a narrow advantage for much of the home straight, but Devine Grey never shirked the task and Thornton got the four-year-old mare to rally back to claim victory.

The middle leg of Thornton’s treble came aboard the $8 chance You Make Me Smile for the Steven O’Dea and Matthew Hoysted training partnership.

Thornton had You Make Me Smile cross to lead early and, once in prime position, Thornton rated the six-year-old son of So YouThink perfectly to maintain a winning advantage all of the way to the line.

Thornton rounded off the day in style completing the treble with another finely judged ride on Sea Raider ($11) for trainer John Gilmore.

Thornton urged Sea Raider to the front after 200m and she had the four-year-old still travelling comfortably as the field turned for home. Sea Raider quickened on cue and then showed good commitment in maintaining his effort to the line to leave his rivals scrambling for the minor placings.

Three wins for three different trainers … with the winners coming back at $6, $8 and $11 (there were no ‘gimmes’ in there) … translated into a very good day out for a rider whose exploits continue to attract attention in the Sunshine State.
