SWEET DOLLY GETTING SWEETER WITH EVERY RUN

By Graham Potter | Saturday, February 27, 2021

The Jewel Prelude for two-year-old fillies at the Sunshine Coast was taken out in stunning fashion by Kevin Hansen trained Sweet Dolly, who kept her unbeaten record intact when winning by an emphatic 4.75 length margin.

Sweet Dolly had two runs under her belt going into this important lead-up race for The Jewel. Those two victories came in a Maiden contest in which she strolled home to a clear-cut 5.80 length victory and she then followed up with an eye-catching win in the Listed Calaway Gal Stakes … which is where she really put all the other two-year-olds on notice.

Here, she never allowed any of her opponents into the race, jumping into a clear lead from which moment she was never troubled at any stage of the race.

Jockey Justin Stanley was happy to have other horses fairly close to him early on but, once Sweet Dolly entered the home straight and was given slightly more rein, the daughter of Real Saga cruised away from the chasing pack with quite contemptuous ease.

After her Calaway Gal Stakes win in December, it was reported that connections of Sweet Dolly knocked back a $400 000 offer to purchase the horse … not a bad position to be in with a horse that was purchased for $1500 as a weanling.

You would think their phone will be ringing again.

The Sunshine Coast win has taken Sweet Dolly’s stake earnings to just over $177 000 … and she could just be warming up as she will now head for The Jewel at the Gold Coast in a couple of week’s time where a $300 000 prize awaits the winner.
