IPSW OCT 22 - WILSON AND SECOND HAND MAC WIN AGAIN

By Graham Potter | Friday, October 23, 2009

Ipswich, October 22, 2009.
Track - Good 3. Rail - out 2.5m.
Class 1 Handicap (Fillies & Mares) - 1200m. Time: 1-11.00.
1 Second Hand Mac; 2 Guanahani; 3 Icandy.

The Matt Kropp trained Second Hand Mac, who was backed in from $11 to $8, scored an end to end win to claim her fourth success from her last five starts. On each occasion that she has won the four-year-old has been ridden by stable apprentice Erin Wilson, who rated the mare perfectly this time around to ensure that her rivals would only be chasing a consolation prize.

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Matt Kropp: “That’s her (jockey Erin Wilson’s) first Provincial winner. She’s ridden a few placings for me, but that’s her first one. She’s had four rides on this horse for four wins. She loves this little mare. Erin was suspended and couldn’t ride the horse two runs back. We put a 4kg claimer on. You’d think she couldn’t have got beat there, but that was the only time she’s lost in her last five starts ... otherwise we’d have quite a nice sequence going.

“We’ll probably have another go here if we can find a fillies and mares race ... maybe even 1400m. She’s due for a bit of a let-up anyway, but we’ll just see how she goes. She’s probably better placed back in the country then. But she might get away with another one, you never know.”

Apprentice jockey Erin Wilson: “Yes it is my first Provincial winner. It was great of (trainer) Matt (Kropp) to put me on. He kept me on. I’ve had four rides for four wins on her now. I am very blessed to get a little horse like her.

“Yeah, the race panned out the way I wanted to. I thought I might have got held up wide in the early stages, but I decided to dig up and push on and they couldn’t get me in the end. She’s just a great little filly. I was pretty confident actually. We just know each other so well now which I think helps.”

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
As R. McMahon was unable to make the weight stewards permitted J. Taylor to be substituted as the rider of Way Too Hot. R. McMahon pleaded guilty to a charge under the provisions of AR118C(c) in that he weighed out for his ride on Way Too Hot when not wearing a safety vest. R. McMahon was penalised the sum of $1,000.00.

Kamadiva (B. El-Issa) was slow to begin. Approaching the 1000m My Cara Mia (J. Bowditch), which was over-racing, had to be steadied off the heels of Second Hand Mac (App E.L. Wilson), which shifted in when not quite clear. App E.L. Wilson was advised to show greater care when shifting ground in future.

Telbron Gold (A. Merritt) raced fiercely in the early and middle stages before compounding after passing the 600m.

B. El-Issa the rider of Kamadiva, which performed poorly, explained that after being slow to begin the mare never travelled well and had not felt comfortable in its action. A post race veterinary examination of Kamadiva failed to reveal any abnormalities.

Stewards sought an explanation from A. Spinks regarding his riding of Ruth’s Secret over the final 600m. A. Spinks explained that is was his intention to follow Kamadiva into the race from the 600m however, approaching the home turn Kamadiva commenced to weaken and he shifted Ruth’s Secret on the track. A. Spinks further explained that Ruth’s Secret was taken wider on the track on the point of the home turn by Kamadiva, which when weakening shifted ground out and in his view Ruth’s Secret will be better suited over races of a further distance.
