WINNO'S WINNERS: DOOMBEN, MARCH 27, 2021

By Darren Winningham | Friday, March 26, 2021

DOOMBEN RACES – SATURDAY 27 MARCH 2021

This weekend we are back at DOOMBEN where the track rated “HEAVY” and the rail is out 0.5 metres for the entire circuit. The track will be rain affected so I will look for some mud larks. Just a brief preview this weekend.

Race 1

Robert Heathcote has Startantes (5) in the race – some solid form and third up this weekend. Taylor Marshall may post a winner for the stable.

Stellar Magic (5), trained by the Steven O’Dea & Matthew Hoysted partnership, won easily at Grafton last start with Ben Thompson aboard. She looks progressive and if she can handle the wet conditions could be one to follow. There has been very good support for this runner in the past 24 hours – it may pay to follow the cash!

Selections:

5 – Startantes
6 – Stellar Magic
4 – Bolt Action
1 – Collays Spirit

Race 2

Humbolt Current (4) was run down late last start by Romakash (2). They look the likely two to battle this result out again this weekend. Jim Byrne will partner the Chris Waller Racing Humbolt Current (4).

If you want to play wide … maybe something each way on the Chris Munce Racing runner Smart Meteor (7), with Bobby El-Issa to ride, could see a dividend come your way.

Selections:

4 – Humbolt Current
2 – Romakash
7 – Smart Meteor
8 – Meteor Light

Race 3

An open race. I like the Gregory Booth trained Captivator (5) who stormed home last start to win over the mile. Michael Hellyer stays on for the run here at Doomben – big odds but maybe with the speed of the race he can get conditions to suit and replicate the effort a fortnight ago.

Guise (7) is another runner from the Chris Waller Racing team – Jim Byrne aboard here. She has been racing well and does like heavy conditions. Coming back in distance from 1805 metres last start to the mile on a heavy track will be suitable – she will be strong at the finish where some of these may be labouring late.

Selections:

5 – Captivator
7 – Guise
9 – Drumadoir
2 – Seeingisbelieving
Rough chance – (3) Take Tea

Race 4

Steven O’Dea & Matthew Hoysted train Better Get Set (6) who was, in my opinion, very good at the Gold Coast when beaten 3.7 lengths by Simply Fly in the QTIS Jewel for Three-Year-Olds last start. She is third up now and I think that she showed last start that she will handle a wet track. She is nice odds at around $8 and I think she can cause an upset here. Ben Thompson rides for the stable,

Bundyandcoke (3) has won his last two starts here in midweek races on a heavy track with Jimmy Orman aboard each time. That form suggests that he will be very difficult to roll here in this race and must be respected.

Rollinwiththeflow (2) raced in the same race as Better Get Set (6) at the Gold Coast last start and ran third on the heavy track. He went out at $101 that day for trainer Tom Button – Ryan Wiggins stays in the saddle again this week.

Selections:

6 – Better Get Set
3 – Bundyandcoke
2 – Rollinwiththeflow
5 – Tara Jasmine
Rough chance – (4) Clearance Sale

Race 5

Vanna Girl (1) resumes for the Edmonds Racing team. Robbie Fradd to ride her. I think her class will get her through in this race – she does have a large weight to contend with which is my only concern.

Cloak (4) is resuming here for the David Vandyke stables at the Sunshine Coast. He goes well fresh and has a distinguished record on rain affected tracks – it may pay to keep your eye on this runner. He is weighted well.

The best wet tracker in the race is Agassi (6) trained by Sonja Kumpikas. He is second up here but pay respect to his form on heavy tracks with three wins and two placings. Taylor Marshall to ride.

Selections:

1 – Vanna Girl
4 – Cloak
6 – Agassi
7 – Elixir

Race 6

First leg of the Quaddie this weekend.

Looks like David Vandyke trains a smart one in Weona Smartone (14) to be ridden by Mark Du Plessis. This gelding has had two striking wins at the races and resumes here after a solid win in a trial on his home track on a soft surface. There has been constant large bets for this runner all week – seems like they think he will win first up!

Do not underestimate the chances of one here from the Michael Costa stables who could chop this favourite in half – the Axe (3)! He was heavily supported at the Gold Coast a fortnight ago and was not too disappointing on a very heavy track. Forgive him for that run and he is a genuine contender here and could be great value in the first leg of the Quaddie at $14.

Leadership Spill (6) is probably a topical tip with all the drama in Canberra this week. Trained by Tony Gollan this gelding will be the likely leader and, on a heavy track, may take some running down. Michael Rodd throws his leg over this one for the first time for the stable.

The stablemate is The Move (12) – disappointing for mine first up at the Gold Coast. Maybe some excuses striking the heavy track first up – maybe a dramatic improvement this weekend with Jim Byrne to ride.

Selections:

14 – Weona Smartone
3 – Axe
6 – Leadership Spill
12 – The Move

Race 7

The first leg of the treble here. Very tough race – play wide punters!

Snitzari (6) from the Kris Lees Racing yards comes off a good win here two weeks ago at a midweek meeting on a heavy track. Similar conditions here and with a 100% strike rate in two starts on a heavy track I think it would be silly to tip against her. Another nice ride for Andrew Mallyon.

Oh Five Glory (4) doesn’t win much but she always races honestly and seems to get in the prizemoney. She is trained by Will and Peter Hulbert and will be ridden by the stable apprentice Adin Thompson. She does race well here at Doomben – maybe a rough hope.

Spirit House (14) is a Tony Gollan runner which Michael Rodd will ride. I am going to forgive the last start failure here three weeks ago in a midweek meeting on the heavy track. My sixth sense says to respect this runner despite the last start effort - $21 for a Gollan runner on a Saturday looks good value!

The two Gold Coast runners must be given a chance as well. Explosive Quality – trained by Gillian Heinrich and Front Money (12) trained by the dynamic duo of Bryan & Daniel Guy. Both are four-year-old mares resuming and both have reasonable form on wet tracks – maybe they can cause an upset.

Selections:

6 – Snitzari
4 – Oh Five Glory
14 – Spirit House
11 – Explosive Quality
Rough chance – (12) Front Money

Race 8

This is a tough race – anything can win.

Trevor Miller and Jimmy Orman pair up with Zingalong (1) again here after he was gallant in defeat behind Simply Fly at the Gold Coast. That looks above average form for this race. He has a large weight here and has drawn a little wide, but I think he is a great each way chance.

Be Water My Friend (2) missed the start and ran home well behind Racecourse Road at the Gold Coast when resuming. He looked a little fat in the parade yard that day and would have taken an enormous amount of benefit from that run. This weekend Nori Tomizawa rides for trainer Daiki Chujo. Note this runner was scratched from an earlier race to be saved for this.

Toorooloo (7), another runner for David Vandkye, resumed with a solid win on her home track a month ago. She has run some tremendous races on wet tracks and, to be fair, probably looks a genuine chance here with Mark Du Plessis to ride.

Snappy Reply (9) resumes here for Gollan Racing with Georgina Cartwright to ride. This three-year-old filly usually just jumps and runs. Drawn handy in barrier 4 she gets her chance to post a win here.

The drums have been beating late in the week for the Edmonds Racing runner – Excel In The Sun (12). Resuming here with one race for one win in her career and is a MiRunners runner. Drawn terrible in barrier 17 this weekend Robbie Fradd will have to ride her for luck to get her home.

Selections:

1 – Zingalong
7 – Toorooloo
2 – Be Water My Friend
9 – Snappy Reply
Rough chance – (12) Excel In the Sun & (16) Master Red

Race 9

The last race – we got here hopefully with some cash in the pocket. A heavy track could be a punter’s peril!

Tony Gollan trains Royal Hale (2) who will be ridden by Michael Rodd and who won first up when heavily backed at Eagle Farm. He has won on a heavy track and has a solid second up record.

Lashes (6) could “flog” this lot if she brings her best form to Queensland. Trained in NSW by Matthew Smith she has a very good race record and does perform well on wet tracks. Robbie Fradd to ride for the stable – do not let this one get under your guard.

So Taken (8) was smashed in the betting when she debuted at the Gold Coast for the Chris Waller Racing team on JEWEL day a fortnight ago. This weekend Ronnie Stewart takes over as the jockey and on that effort on the bog track at the Gold Coast that day she is a superb chance here. She will race handy and will enjoy the heavy track.

Partners (11) is another runner who loves a wet track and heavy surfaces. He showed this for trainer Scott Singleton on JEWEL day as well when he went down in the final bound over 1100 metres. I don’t think the extra distance will bother him here.

Selections:

2 – Royal Hale
8 – So Taken
6 - Lashes
11 – Partners
Rough chances – (7) Katy’s Daughter & (3) Hold The Line
