WINNO'S WINNERS: DOOMBEN, JULY 10, 2021

By Darren Winningham | Friday, July 9, 2021

DOOMBEN RACES – SATURDAY JULY 10, 2021

This weekend we are back at DOOMBEN where the track is rated “SOFT”and the rail is out 1 metre for the entire circuit. The track may get a downgrade with rain forecast

After spending a busy time in Grafton this week where the Ramornie and the Grafton Cup have been run and won (congratulations to Michael Costa and Ben Thompson on their Purrfect Cup win), and because of time constraints, my preview for this Doomben meeting will be brief.

Selections only.

NB: As these selections were made prior to race-day please check for any changes to track conditions and for any scratchings on the day.

Race 1

Paul Butterworth trains Our Red Planet (1) – he won on debut – I think he could post two in a row – Ben Thompson to ride.

Selections:

3 – Our Red Planet
2 – Bayerische
1 – Hinged
6 – Rayjen

Race 2

The Tony Gollan trained Tavion Prince (1) I think will be hard to beat back at Doomben. The distance will not be a drama.

Total Recall (2) put in a solid effort last time out at Eagle Farm – could improve here with Jim Byrne aboard for Paul Messara.

Selections:

1 – Tavion Prince
2 – Total Recall
6 – Thatfridayfeeling
4 – Savvy Oak

Race 3

Able Mabel (6) resumes here for Barry Lockwood – a solid recent trial would suggest that she is primed for a first up killing – again Ben Thompson will ride.

Power Boom (10) has her first run in QLD – Stephanie Thornton to ride. Has had a recent trial on the Gold Coast – could sprint well fresh.

Whilst we are on about Ben and Stephanie – Ben did bring home more trophies from the Grafton Carnival winning the Grafton Guineas and Grafton Cup!

Selections:

6– Able Mabel
10 – Power Boom
11 – Miss Barty
8 – Freya’s Cloak

Race 4

This race has been decimated by scratchings.

Looks like a battle between Seentoomany (5), trained by Grafton Cup winning trainer Michael Costa, and Indispensable (6) trained by Gary Duncan. If the track gets downgraded any further it may enhance the chances of Indispensable (6).

Selections:

5 – Seentoomany
6 – Indispensable
8 – Cinquedea
9 – Safin

Race 5

Looked for some value here with the Kris Lees Racing trained Zeftabrook (12) to be ridden by Larry Cassidy. Down in the weights and does handle soft tracks.

Good Chat (5) from the David Vandyke yards resumes here and always races well fresh – gets in well with the claim for Madeleine Wishart who will take 3 kilograms off him.

Keep your eye on Luskin Hero (9) who has won his past two starts and will be ridden by Brad Stewart.

Selections:

12 – Zeftabrook
5 – Good Chat
7 – Purroni
9 – Luskin Hero
Rough chance – (4) Degas

Race 6

First leg of the Quaddie with a large field.

Not a fan of the race. Take your chances.

Selections:

9 – Predictable Miss
1 – Whispered
13 – Two Smokin Barrels
14 – Zamzara
Rough chance – (10) Quotant

Race 7

The first leg of the treble here. A sprint over 1200 metres.

Axe (1) was scratched from the Ramornie at Grafton earlier in the week to be saved for this race. Michael Costa and Jag Guthmann-Chester combine to see if they can post a win after a wonderful effort in the recent Eye Liner Stakes at Ipswich.

Gee Tee Tee (5) is trained by Steven O’Dea & Matthew Hoysted with Ben Thompson to ride. Comes off a 4 week freshen up and his efforts last time out in the Listed Hinkler make him an ideal candidate to win the race. The form of that race appears strong with both Away Game and Southern Lad (won the Grafton RAMORNIE) winning since this race.

Selections:

5 – Gee Tee Tee
1 – Axe
4 – Weboughtazou
7 – Stuttering
Rough chance – (8) The Fire Trap

Race 8

Looks a nice race for Ziemba (9) for Robert Heathcote Racing – tongue tie goes on will be ridden by Robbie Fradd - is second up here. Has a solid second up record.

Roman Aureus (4) resumed at Ipswich with a wonderful effort for Brian Wakefield. Larry Cassidy will ride – he goes very well on this Doomben track – looks the likely danger.

Selections:

9 – Ziemba
4 – Roman Aureus
1 – Boomsara
7 – At Witz End
Rough chances – (16) Racing Paradise

Race 9

The last race – an extremely competitive field. Tough way to end the day.

I like the Kelly Schweida trained Fleet Dove (1) to have a change of luck with Justin Huxtable to ride.

Redoute’s Image has won her past two starts and continues to improve – trained by Kris Lees Racing and Andrew Mallyon will ride.

The favourite is Kingston’s Here (7) – good recent form and cannot be overlooked. Ben Thompson will ride this one.

Selections:

1 – Fleet Dove
2 – Redoute’s Image
7 – Kingston’s Here
8 – Better Than Best
Rough chance – (3) Rollinwiththeflow
