WINNO'S WINNERS: DOOMBEN, JULY 24, 2021

By Darren Winningham | Thursday, July 22, 2021

This weekend we are back at Doomben with the track rated “soft” and the rail out 3.5 metres for the entire circuit. The track may get a downgrade with rain forecast.

Wow – the Olympics Games in 2032 in Brisbane – where will the AFL and the NRL play whilst all the venues are confiscated to play host to Olympic events? A great opportunity to feature some horse racing in QLD as well – an opportunity for so many celebrations.

Must say people who have lived in an Olympic city always rave how wonderful the experience was – I look forward to being around to watch some events and walk around whilst the Games of the XXXV Olympiad will hosted in Queensland.

Oh – back to the racing!

NB: As these selections were made prior to race-day please check for any changes to track conditions and for any scratchings on the day.

Race 1

Rob Heathcote seems to be having a good run late in the season with his two-year-old runners and maybe Archdeacon (2), with Ryan Maloney up, can continue with his winning form after a solid effort last time when winning at Eagle Farm over 1400 metres.

Hinged (1) was too good for them last time out here over 1350 metres. Goes up in weight after winning her past two starts. Michael Nolan has elected to put Kyle Wilson-Taylor (KWT) aboard and claim his 3 kilograms – this gets her in well and could see KWT ride his first Saturday winner.

Shaluna (8) is a dark horse for mine. Trained by Desleigh Forster and ridden by Jim Byrne, she may just be suited by the mile.

Selections:

2 – Archdeacon
1 – Hinged
8 – Shaluna
4 – Bay Of Kiel

Race 2

A race over 2000 metres – small field.

Tavion Prince (3) won last time out here over the mile for Gollan Racing. Up in distance – but looks ideally placed again.

Smart Meteor (6) from Munce Racing is the danger for mine. Larry Cassidy to ride. Won over the mile at Eagle Farm three weeks ago. Should appreciate the step up in distance.

He Runs Away (1) has returned to the Chris Waller yards after racing in some quality races in Sydney. Has had a four week freshen up – if he is anywhere near fit he will be difficult to hold out and has Luke Dittman aboard. This runner won two races on this track after a long period of no wins back in October and November last year. He could be serious value at $8.

Selections:

3 – Tavion Prince
6 – Smart Meteor
1 – He Runs Away
2 – Seentoomany

Race 3

Tamilaide (3) won the Grafton Guineas in what I could describe is one of the best efforts I have seen in the Guineas in the past five years. A repeat of that performance will see him extremely hard to beat here for the Les Kelly stables on the Gold Coast. Brad Stewart will ride him here this weekend. Keep your eyes on this runner I think he has some serious ability.

Safeeya (6), trained by Lee Freedman on the Gold Coast, won last time out at Eagle Farm – a solid win that would suggest that the filly will be competitive again here. Jim Byrne retains the ride.

Dzsenifer (2) was well backed last time out when she stepped put in the Winx Guineas on the Sunshine Coast. Drops back in grade here with Jimmy Orman to ride for the stable – she is third up as well – do not overlook.

Selections:

3 – Tamilaide
6 – Safeeya
2 – Dzsenifer
1 – Rogue Rocker

Race 4

The Tony Gollan speedster Miami Fleiss (6) resumes here this weekend. Georgina Cartwright will ride her – just some concern drawn in barrier 10 as she loves to ping the gates and lead. A recent barrier trial would suggest that she is cherry ripe for this first up assignment.

If you want to find one to knock off the favourite I would suggest not going past Eloquently (4) who resumed at the Sunshine Coast for Steve Tregea and was super impressive on a wet track. She races well fresh and I think will be very competitive again this weekend – Anthony Allen will ride her again.

Dusty Tycoon (2) resumed behind Eloquently (4) and looked like she would derive some benefit from the outing. She is trained by Robert Heathcote and Alex Patis will claim her 3 kilograms – she gets in well at the weights.

Selections:

6 – Miami Fleiss
4 – Eloquently
2 – Dusty Tycoon
5 – Better Than Best

Race 5

Difficult race over 2000 metres.

Not a fan of the race. Take your chances. I have gone wide here in my selections.

Top Order (10) turned in a nice effort last time out here a fortnight ago for trainer Kim Anderson. He worked home well over the 2200 metres – dropping back in distance I think will be of benefit to this runner. Taylor Marshall, who continues to ride in wonderful form, rides him again.

The Catch (13), trained by Michael Costa, won well over 1700 metres at Grafton last time out with a massive weight. Was heavily backed on that occasion. Again, since the markets have opened, there has been tremendous support for this runner in the markets. He steps up to 2000 metres for the first time – but after looking at his last effort the extra distance will be no drama – Jake Bayliss will ride.

Shamani (14) is a Richard & Michael Freedman runner who will be ridden by Larry Cassidy. Resumed after a short freshen up over 2190 metres at Ipswich – I think that hit out would have given her some fitness that could show her popping up here this weekend at a decent price.

Selections:

10 – Top Order
13 – The Catch
14 – Shamani
8 – Honorable Spirit

Race 6

First leg of the Quaddie this weekend – a large field.

John Moore trains the progressive So Clever (17) who will be ridden by Jaden Lloyd. Gets in very well with 52 kilograms – has only had two career starts and has won them both. Drawn well – looks well placed by the master ex-Hong Kong Champion trainer – and probably all these factors justify the short price and the heavy support for this runner since the markets have opened and he was confirmed as a starter with some early scratchings. I just have some reservations with him stepping up to Saturday grade in town at his third career start. I am happy to be proved wrong!

I like Acrobatic (7) from the Kelly Schweida racing team to beat the favourite. This runner has always shown some ability and has raced in some nice quality races. He was second up and won a race midweek at Doomben a fortnight ago and I just think that he looks well placed and now he has won again he may just go on with it. Jimmy Orman will ride him again here and I expect him to sit in behind the speed before making his move late to storm home. I know there is 6 kilograms between them in the weights – that may be the telling factor late when the judge calls a halt to the race.

Big Bad Bruce (10) is second up here for Gollan Racing and Ryan Maloney will ride him. Has had a freshen up since his win a month ago and then a recent barrier trial would suggest that he will be very competitive in this field this weekend.

Selections:

7 – Acrobatic
17 – So Clever
10 – Big Bad Bruce
9 – Lashoni
Rough chance – (15) Luskin Hero

Race 7

The first leg of the treble here. Over 1615 metres.

Indispensable (4) was well backed last time out when he won here a fortnight ago when he led all the way in a dominant win. This weekend he goes up in weight and trainer Gary Duncan has elected to put KWT aboard and claim 3 kilograms – I think a smart move to offset the weight and ensure he will be competitive again.

Regal Stage (3) is from the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott team is Sydney who sent this runner to Rockhampton last start to win the Rockhampton Cup. Matthew McGillivray rode him to victory there and will ride him here again. It was wonderful to see Matty win another feature race – he has been riding well despite limited chances in town recently. I would expect that he will push forward and trail Indispensable (4) in the running and make it a true contest over the mile late.

Profit (1) from the Chris Anderson yards will be ridden by Leah Kilner and the claim will be a massive benefit to this runner. He went around in the TAB Glasshouse last time out and I think showed he was looking for a mile in that run. He gets the mile here and, to be fair, is not harshly treated at the weights. I think he could be working home late out wide if the tempo is genuine in the race.

Selections:

4 – Indispensable
3 – Regal Stage
1 – Profit
11 – Great Powers

Race 8

A Class 6 over 1350 metres.

Hard Labour (4) won the Mother’s Gift at Grafton last time out for Edmonds Racing. The win was full of authority and with the addition of blinkers on that occasion she decimated the opposition. Andrew Mallyon rode her to that victory and remains aboard and I cannot see any reason why she could not repeat the dose this weekend.

Gollan Racing has Purroni (9) and Really Discreet (5) engaged. They both have genuine chances.

Purroni (9) was scratched from an earlier race and Jim Byrne will ride for the stable. Was first up at Ipswich after a short freshen up and was run down late. There was nothing wrong with that effort and, at $8 and drawn well in barrier 2 here, I think she is a genuine contender in this race. Second up here at a distance that she loves I cannot overlook this runner.

Really Discreet (5) was solid in the Eye Liner before going to Rockhampton and not firing. If you forgive the Rocky run and go on the run at Ipswich in the Eye Liner, she rates very well here. Ryan Maloney to ride.

Robert Heathcote trains East Asia (3) who has won his past two starts with Luke Dittman riding on each occasion. Look I cannot knock the form of this runner and he continues to post wins – you know they say winning form is good form – it may pay to follow this runner.

Selections:

4 – Hard Labour
9 – Purroni
5 – Really Discreet
3 – East Asia
Rough chances – (2) Better Reflection

Race 9

The last race – an extremely competitive field.

I think Rob Heathcote has some nice chances in Stuttering (2) and Ziemba (6) engaged.

Let’s start with Stuttering (2) to be ridden by Mark Du Plessis who has a good strike rate on the gelding with ten rides – 3 wins and 5 placings. He is second up this weekend and normally races well second up. Drawn nicely I think that he may elect to take up the running and set a good tempo out and front – he could just hold them all off late.

His other runner Ziemba (6) on the other hand will race midfield and will work home late with Ryan Maloney in the saddle. This runner is third up here and looks a genuine knock out chance.

Ulysses (4) is a Richard & Michael Freedman runner who makes his debut in Queensland when third up here this weekend. The Freedman brothers have had some great success in recent weeks in SE QLD and this runner looks ideally placed with Michael Cahill to ride. There has been some solid support since the markets opened firming from $7 to $5. Keep your eye on this runner.

Roman Aureus (1) is trained by Brian Wakefield. He loves this track and has never been out of the money in seven starts here. He has drawn a little wide – but he can settle midfield. I am just concerned that he may get caught wide in the running from barrier 14, however, Kyle Wilson Taylor will ride and take 3 kilograms off the massive weight – 59 kilograms – that makes this runner very appealing in this final race. I will be looking at the tempo in racing earlier in the day and seeing if there is any bias – if they are winning from behind and making ground late you must have this runner in your multiple and exotic bets.

Selections:

2 – Stuttering
4 – Ulysses
6 – Ziemba
1 – Roman Aureus
Rough chance – (10) Bentley Magic
