DOOM OCT 31 - FUSETTE SCORES EYE-CATCHING DEBUT WIN

By Graham Potter | Thursday, November 5, 2009

Doomben, October 31, 2009.
Track - Good 3. Rail - out 2m.
2yo QTIS 600 Handicap - 1010m. Time: 59.63.
1 Fusette; 2 Bust ‘N’ Loose; 3 Slice And Dice.

The Darren Bell trained first-timer Fusette won with complete authority in an eye-catching debut performance.

The chestnut filly had good gate speed which allowed her to take up a position in a strong second place, one out and one back off the leader Bust ‘N’ Loose. These two runners brought the field into the home straight where Fusette started to apply pressure on the leader. Bust ‘N’ Loose did kick on, but the favourite was no match for Fusette on the day. The latter claimed the lead at the 200m and chased on to a largely untroubled victory.

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Trainer Darren Bell: “We bought her on type. We paid $33000 for her. No, she’s not paid up for the Magic Millions. I don’t know if you can pay up late. We’ll have to check that out.

“She hasn’t had an official trial, but she’s had four jump outs ... two short ones, two long ones ... and she was very well schooled for today’s race. We’ll see how she pulls up after that before we decide what we do next. It wasn’t even my intention to keep going and race her this time, but she’s given us no reason to put her out.

“We’ll sort of go through the same sort of thing again after this run. If she comes through this alright we might have another crack. In particular because she is not a Magic Millions horse ... if she was I’d probably give her a bit of a let-up, you know ... but we’ll just see how she pulls up from this one.”

PRICE FLUCTUATIONS:
Winner (Fusette): 16.00 steady.
Favourite (Bust ‘N’ Loose): 2.20 in to 1.95 in to 2.00. Finished second.

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Waltz With You (J. Taylor) and Reflection Of Jade (R. McMahon) brushed on jumping away. Public Prosecutor (G. Colless) and Gold Success (B. Stewart) were slow to begin. Both Plum Duff (A. Spinks) and Flying Mel (J. Holder) had a tendency to lay out in the middle stages. Hide ‘N’ Seek (M. Palmer), which raced wide throughout, hung out rounding the home turn and over the concluding stages.
Sansire (D. Craven) raced wide throughout.

Stewards sought an explanation from jockey M. Cahill in respect of the riding tactics employed on Slice And Dice between the 500m and 300m where there appeared to be an opportunity for him to improve his position three wide around Flying Mel (J. Holder).

M. Cahill explained that as the horse was having its first start in a race, it did not travel genuinely throughout, which compelled him to urge the horse forward in order to have it travelling and hold a position in the race. M. Cahill further added that he was content to follow Flying Mel into the race rather than progressing to the outside of that horse and risk being forced wide on the track. M. Cahill explained that once he was able to place Slice And Dice into the clear, the colt finished the race off well. Stewards accepted his explanation.

A post-race veterinary examination of Gold Success revealed the colt to be lame in the off-foreleg and had lost its near-fore plate in running. Trainer G. Heinrich was advised that she would be required to provide a veterinary clearance for Gold Success prior to its next race start.
