RABBIT CLAUSE AND MODELKA MAKE IT A DOUBLE FOR TEAM EDMONDS AT IPSWICH

By Graham Potter | Friday, August 13, 2021

The first winners for the 2020/21 racing season for the Toby and Trent Edmonds training partnership arrived at Ipswich on August 13 where they secured a double on the day.

The Your Song gelding Rabbit Clause got the scoreboard rolling with a win in a Class 3 Plate over 1350m.

The five-year-old had been knocking at the door having finished second and third in his previous two starts … both over the Ipswich 1350m track and distance … so he was well primed going into this race, a fact that was reflected on the betting boards which saw him start as a $3.70 second favourite.

There was a chase for the lead coming out of the gates but, once things had settled down, jockey Andrew Mallyon had Rabbit Clause perfectly positioned in third place tracking the early leaders Hostage Of War ($10) and Three Stripes (the $2.40 favourite), just two lengths back.

Mallyon was still biding his time in the sweep to the turn but, once the field straightened for home, Mallyon wasted little time in setting Rabbit Clause about his task.

Rabbit Clause quickly took the measure of the hard ridden favourite Three Stripes and then, just as quickly, ranged up alongside Hostage Of War who was staying on strongly enough. For a brief moment these two runners matched strides before Rabbit Clause changed gears again and moved into a clear lead to earn his fourth win in his eighteenth start.

Modelka provided the second leg of the Team Edmonds training double when taking out a BM68 Handicap over 1100m.

A very lightly raced but well-performed mare, Modelka had similarly given notice of a pending win with a finishing a close-up runner-up behind Married To The Mob in her previous start over the same course and distance.

This time Modelka had the claim of apprentice jockey Zac Lloyd to help her cause and help her it did in a fairly pressurised finish in which Modelka, while always basically being in control, could not afford to relax all the way to the line.

The two main Modelka ($2.15) and Family Star ($3.50) cut out the early gallop with Modelka snapping at Family Star’s heels in the first half of the race as the latter showed the way.

Family Star kept kicking in the home straight, but Modelka was up for the chase and she gradually gained the advantage over Family Star to take the lead inside the final 100m.

Married To The Mob, who had beaten Modelka in their previous clash was running on from behind, best of all, in the closing stages, but arrived too late to seriously trouble Modelka who got home safely by 0.50 lengths.

It was a good effort by Married To The Mob as, with Lloyd’s claim on Modelka and Married To The Mob’s weight rise for that previous win, there was a massive 5.5kg turnaround at the weights in favour of the Edmonds runner … and a good, professional effort from both Modelka and Lloyd to make sure that advantage was put to maximum use.
