ZOUMANJI PULLS ONE OUT OF THE BAG FOR TEAM EDMONDS AT THE GOLD COAST

By Graham Potter | Saturday, August 14, 2021

The results of Saturday August 14, 2021 provided the Edmonds training partnership with a winner, two seconds and two fourth placings from only five runners.

The winner came in the form of Zoumanji, who shed her maiden ticket at the second time of asking when winning over 1100m at the Gold Coast.

Zoumanji’s first disappointing run, where she began awkwardly and finished down the field at a starting price of $4, was clearly not forgiven by punters who let the Zoustar mare go off at $17 this time, but this would be a different story altogether to her debut run.

Pushed into a handy third spot early by Jag Guthmann-Chester, Zoumani was up to second place as the field turned for home. The only runner in front of her at that stage was the $2.40 favourite Green Kudos who jockey Noel Callow had sent into a strong lead shortly after the start in an attempt to break the back of his opposition.

Green Kudos held a two length margin over Zoumanji early in the straight but the Edmonds runner methodically set about reeling the favourite in and, in what turned out to be an inch perfect ride by Guthmann-Chester, Zoumanji did just that to claim victory by the narrowest of margins in the very last stride.

The second placed finishers on the day were Peppi La Few, who finished a 1.25 length second behind Royal Hale in a BM85 Handicap over 1200m at Eagle Farm, and Smooth Move, who finished second behind Mother’s Day, like Royal Hale another Tony Gollan trained runner, in a Class 2 Handicap over 1200m.

This was the third successive start in which Peppi La few had to settle for a runner-up finish, a run of results which includes a second place behind Phobetor, who went on to finish second in the Ramornie before winning the Group 2 Missile Stakes at Randwick.

For her part, Smooth Move has now finished in the placings in both of her two starts since resuming after a four month layoff.

The fourth place finishers were Indian Dreamer (over 1500m in a Class 3 Handicap at Eagle Farm) and invincore (who raced first-up in a BM78 over1100m at the Gold Coast).
