VOW AND DECLARE JOINS THE CASUALTY LIST FOR THE SPRING CARNIVAL

By Graham Potter | Tuesday, September 28, 2021

The 2019 Melbourne Cup winner Vow And Declare is the latest runner to join the casualty list for the Spring Racing Carnival after suffering a tendon strain.

Trainer Danny O’Brien has confirmed that Vow And Declare would be turned out immediately so that he can begin his recovery process from what O’Brien told Racing.com as being … “at the low-end of the scale as far as severity, but it will require some management and he will miss the spring and probably the best case scenario is getting him back for the back-end of the autumn.”

O’Brien did emphasise that the timeframe for Vow And Declare’s return is not set in stone and that he would keep an open mind on that subject.

In terms of his Melbourne Cup representation in this year’s big race, O’Brien has turned his attention to two other prospects who will both be action on Saturday.

Young Werther runs in the Turnbull Stakes while Miami Bound will contest the Bart Cummings.

Young Werther is following the path taken by Vow And Declare in his successful spring campaign. Vow And Declare finished fourth in the Turnbull and second in the Caulfield Cup (behind Mer De Glace) before striking Melbourne Cup gold and O’Brien will be watching Young Werther very closely on Saturday.

“You’d want to see something from him on Saturday … you don’t want to go there and run poorly and think you are going to turn it around for the Caulfield Cup,” O’Brien told Racing.com.

Young Werther and Miami Bound are currently both listed as long priced runners in the Melbourne Cup betting market.
