WEETWOOD DAY - ALWAYS A BIG DAY OUT FOR ANY TOOWOOMBA BASED STABLE

By Graham Potter | Saturday, September 25, 2021

Weetwood Day is always a big day out for any Toowopomba based trainer and it was no different for the Sears Training Partnership, who came away with a highly creditable third place finish from Red Wave in the Garden City Guineas and a fifth place finish by Tycoon Ace in the Weetwood itself.

In the Guineas, yet again, Red Wave’s ultra-consistent level of performance was on display. A winner and twice runner-up in his three starts leading into the Guineas, Red Wave once again gave his all.

Red Wave landed in the leading line at the jump before Jimmy Orman allowed him to settle in third spot, getting the run of the race on the rail behind Keefy and Whitewater who set the early gallop.

Red Wave momentarily gave some ground when the speed went on in the approach to the home turn, but he quickly regained momentum to turn into the straight in fourth place a little over two lengths off the lead.

In spite of not being able to match the turn of foot which carried Bulloo past all of her rivals and on the Guineas victory, the son of Red Dazzler never gave up the fight and stayed on stoutly enough in the end to be able to go past Whitewater and claim third place behind the runaway winner Bulloo and Keefy.

Red Wave now has a record of one win and four placed finishes from seven starts.

Tycoon Ace was arguably a little unlucky in having to settle for fifth place in the highly competitive Weetwood Handicap over 1200m

Kyle Wilson-Taylor had Tycoon Ace in a prominent fourth position as the field chased down the back stretch. Wilson-Taylor then made a move in the sweep to the turn to corner, three wide, but only a half-a-length behind You Make Me Smile and Apache Chase, who had joined issue at the head of affairs.

As Apache Chase won that battle up front and kicked strongly for home, Tycoon Ace didn’t blink and maintained the chase all the way up the straight.

Apache Chase was strong though but, nevertheless, just inside the last 100m, Tycoon Ace looked to be in prime position to claim second place and get a suitable reward for his stout effort, but two swoopers, Desert Lord and Royal Hale, flew up late down the outside of the track … going past Tycoon Ace, who was also beaten out of fourth place by a short-head in a last stride bob with Tambo’s Mate.

That fifth place result came just 1.40 lengths behind the winner Apache Chase. At a starting price of $41, Tycoon Ace sure gave them all a fright. It was a very good effort by the nine-year-old gelding against the ‘youngsters’ who finished in front of him.

Also on Weetwood day, the Sears training partnership claimed another third place finish in the form of Jetski, who finished less than a length behind Don’t Stop in a BM 75 Handicap over 1200m.
