RACING NSW MOVES ON GOLDEN SLIPPER PRIZE-MONEY

By Graham Potter | Wednesday, November 3, 2021

While the general national racing focus remains firmly on the aftermath of the Melbourne Cup a day after the big race, as well as looking towards Oaks Day, Racing NSW has intensified its rivalry with Racing Victoria, edging its way into a share of the current spotlight by announcing a prize-money increase for the Longines Golden Slipper Stakes from 2022.

The 2022 edition of the event will now be worth $5 million.

Not only that, but the Australian turf Club will also put up a $1 million bonus for any horse that wins one of a series of predetermined pathway races AND the Golden Slipper … the same principle and the same bonus amount that Racing Victoria has on offer for the winner of the Empire Rose.

In a Racing NSW press release, Racing NSW Chairman Mr Russell Balding AO, said: “Importantly, this prizemoney increase strengthens the Longines Golden Slipper as our autumn’s marquee race held at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse.

“The increased Golden Slipper prizemoney recognises its importance as the world’s best two-year-old race and one of the most important races in Sydney’s autumn. With feature race prizemoney having increased in recent years this increase ensures the standing of the Golden Slipper which showcases Australia’s best two-year-old sprinters.”

Australian Turf Club Chairman Matthew McGrath added these comments.

“There is no race in the world like the Longines Golden Slipper at Rosehill Gardens, and these increases continue to elevate this race-day as amongst the very best on the global stage,” said McGrath.

“The Longines Golden Slipper is the pinnacle event of the Australian juvenile racing program and the $1 million bonus from the Australian Turf Club makes our pathway races for two-year-olds an even greater focus of Sydney racing in autumn.

“The very best quality two-year-olds in Australia will race in Sydney ahead of the ultimate prize.”
