RED BLOOM SCORES A MOST WELCOME WIN

By Graham Potter | Saturday, January 15, 2022

A win … a win … my kingdom for a win!

That could well have been the call from the Sears Training Partnership after an extraordinary run of placings that would have become frustrating for even the most easy going of trainers.

That win duly arrived courtesy of a Red Bloom in a BM78 Handicap over 1350m at Doomben on January 15.

The daughter of Red Dazzler was already a five-time winner going into the race and, third up after a spell, it was fair to expect her to show some improvement after two only average runs since resuming … but punters still turned away from the five-year-old, letting her start at double figure odds of $21.

That would prove to be their mistake.

Kyle Wilson-Taylor, who you would have to assume was not short of confidence having already ridden four winners at the meeting by the time he got the leg-up on Red Bloom, jumped Red Bloom in the leading line but, being caught wide from the eleven barrier draw, Wilson-Taylor then elected to ease Red Bloom off the speed, allowing her to settle in seventh spot, some six lengths off the lead, as the field went down the back stretch.

Patience was then the name of the game and Wilson-Taylor was content to hold his position and bide his time. It was only when approaching the point of the home turn that Wilson-Taylor got more vigorous in the saddle, pushing Red Blood forward to move into a challenging position, albeit chasing five wide on turn.

The two favourites, Astro Toy Boy ($2.25) and Starvirgo ($4.20) were both ahead of Red Bloom at that time, but they were also firmly in Red Bloom’s sights as the Sears trained runner set about conquering the task that lay ahead.

There wasn’t an explosion of acceleration from Red Bloom, but rather a sure and steady buildup of momentum which ultimately translated into a finishing effort of real note.

While the two favourites were doing each other no favours in the first half of the straight, bumping and boring when racing too tightly together on the inside rail, Wilson-Taylor had ensured Red Bloom had a clear, untroubled run all of the way to the line and she never faltered on her way to securing her sixth career victory (with nine placings) from twenty-eight starts.

This win rounded off a magnificent day in the saddle for Kyle Wilson-Taylor who claimed five wins over the eight race card.
