SPIRIT ONE LANDS WELL JUDGED END TO END WIN

By Graham Potter | Saturday, February 12, 2022

On February 12, fast forward from Goldeel’s win at the Gold Coast to Toowoomba where the Tony and Maddysen Sears training partnership picked up their second winner for the day when Spirit One scored her fourth career victory in a BM68 Handicap over 1050m.

It was a well-deserved victory and the warning signs of its arrival were there after she had recorded two runner-up finishes and a fourth placing in her three previous starts this preparation after resuming from a seven month break.

The plan clearly was to take no prisoners as Alex Patis pushed Spirit One ($8.50) into a clear lead at the jump. There was also no loafing around once Spirit One had claimed that leading spot with Patis encouraging her mount to maintain a strong gallop.

Spirit One was allowed a slight breather in the sweep to the turn, without ever compromising her leading position, and when she kicked again on straightening, the chase was well and truly on.

Only one runner, First Crown ($2.60) managed to emerge from the pack to make a race of it. He was making up ground very quickly late, but Patis had rated Spirit One to perfection and, in spite of First Crown’s late charge, the result was never seriously in doubt.

Spirit One now has four wins and six minor placings from nineteen starts with $252 750 banked in prize-money.
