WINNO'S WINNERS: DOOMBEN, MARCH 26

By Darren Winningham | Friday, March 25, 2022

Back at Doomben this weekend with the track rated ‘soft’ and the rail is true for the entire track. The track has had a break from racing and should race well.

NB: As these selections were made prior to raceday please check for any changes to track conditions and for any scratchings on the day.

Race 1

The race is for the two-year-old runners.

Let me start by welcoming Luke Tarrant back to a Saturday meeting. Plus, he is riding the favourite Steady Ready (5) for the Sears Racing team. I just reviewed the colours and I see that they are BLUE – I know how much he loves wearing BLUE and how much he loves barracking for NSW come State of Origin time. Now that I have “talked smack” – the horse won a barrier trial at Toowoomba by 13.3 lengths – looked an amazing effort in the trial – hence the short price. I have respect for the runner, and I will expect Luke will have plenty to celebrate if the colt wins but I am going to tip something to beat him – (note to self – egg on the face moment).

Saweetie (7) is trained by Tony Gollan and was sent out favourite on debut. The filly led them up and just seemed to peak on her run – I think this weekend she will strip better for that effort, and we will see an improved effort with Stephanie Thornton in the saddle again.

Desleigh Forster (6) trains To Boogie (6) a debutant with Jim Byrne aboard. Was third in a recent trial behind Flop Turn River (2). Just think that this runner will have improved from that trial and could be a serious knock out chance.

Selections:

7 – Saweetie
5 – Steady Ready
6 – To Boogie
3 – Roadtrip
Rough chance – (2) Flop Turn River

Race 2

The Gollan Racing runner Knight Mariner (10) has done everything right in two runs after a long period off due to injury. The mile at Doomben should see him run a bold race. He has a tremendous record and Ryan Maloney will ride.

Deep Sceiva (7) has been great in her first three starts from a spell. She is trained by Robert Heathcote Racing and will be ridden by Jimmy Orman. The mile is what she has been screaming out for this preparation. I just think getting back to Doomben where she has won will see her very competitive this weekend.

If the track deteriorates keep your eye on Slow Hands (3) he loves the wet.

Selections:

7 – Deep Sceiva
10 – Knight Mariner
3 – Slow Hands
9 – Red Bloom

Race 3

Can Robert Heathcote train two winners in a row? He is well represented with Sweet Margot May (2). She got back last time out and stormed home to win in an impressive performance. The smaller field should be to her liking – just hope she gets some luck in the straight – Ryan Maloney will ride.

Menazzi (1) won last time out as well. This gelding is very classy in my opinion. It was hard to split my top two selections. He is third up this weekend for Stuart Kendrick and Tiffani Brooker will ride him again. He has won both starts up from a spell and looks to post three in a row.

Mister Larrabee (4) is the stable mate. He will be ridden by Justin Huxtable. I think back at Doomben we should see an improved effort this weekend. David “The Big Fish” Salmon is a part owner – maybe he will buy WINNO and a drink if this runner gets home!

Selections:

2 – Sweet Margot May
1 – Menazzi
4 – Mister Larrabee
6 – Star Gamble

Race 4

Merimee (3) is trained on the Gold Coast by Chris Waller. Just seemed to plug away last start over a similar distance in the race won the super filly Gyspy Goddess. So maybe the run had more merit than what it appeared. Jimmy Orman retains the ride on her this weekend.

Lekvarte (5) is trained in Sydney by Joseph Pride and has been sent north for a hit and run mission. The filly raced last start in a much higher-class race at Kembla Grange – she is a short-priced favourite here this weekend. Mark Du Plessis will ride – he has been absent with recovering from a recent injury – he will be looking for a winner to pay all those expensive medical bills.

The Chris Munce Racing pair of Military Gambler (1) and Southern Stock (2) are not without a rough chance.

Selections:

3 – Merimee
5 – Lekvarte
1 – Military Gambler
2 – Southern Stock

Race 5

This race is over 2000 metres.

Chris Waller Racing has some good chances here. Fortified (9) is the favourite at around the $5 mark and Jimmy Orman will ride. Last time out he was sent out as a short-priced favourite over 2412 metres at Eagle Farm. He just seemed to plug home late – I think dropping back in distance and Jimmy Orman aboard he will be more competitive this week.

The stable mate is Kutayha (10) who will be ridden by Larry Cassidy this weekend and I think he didn’t fire on the synthetic surface at the Sunshine Coast. So, I am forgiving him that run and hoping that back at Doomben, where he has run a good second over 2000 metres, he will show up here. $11 is rude odds that are on offer for mine – I will be backing him each way.

Irukandji (5) is on the quick back up after racing last weekend on the Gold Coast. He got too far back in the running, however, worked home solidly to finish off the 1800 metre event strongly. This weekend Ryan Maloney will ride him from barrier 1. I think he may be ridden more positive from this barrier and not be too far back in the running.

Osetermeier (6) has won his past three starts for Alyssa & Troy Sweeney at Ipswich. He comes to the big smoke looking for a win. Boris Thornton will ride him for the first time this weekend and he has been well supported in the early markets. Winning form is good form!

Selections:

10 – Kutayha
9 – Fortified
5 – Irukandji
6 – Ostermeier
Rough chances – (4) Warp Speed

Race 6

Over the 1200 metres. First leg of the Quaddie!

Desleigh Forster trains Aidensfield (13) with Jim Byrne to ride. She resumed with a strong effort first up at Eagle Farm – will strip fitter on a track that she should enjoy – could post her first win for the new stable.

Contessa (14) resumes here for Chris Waller Racing. Last preparation her form was very consistent. She has had a recent barrier trial on the Gold Coast, and I thought that was very strong and would suggest that she could run a race here at silly odds of $25. Ryan Maloney will ride the mare first up and I have a sneaky suspicion she could run a bold race at huge odds.

Keep an eye on any market moves for the stable mate Bullfinch (1) who has a very good second up record with two wins from three starts. Could be one at large odds to bother the judge here when he calls a halt to the race.

Magic Ruler (9) resumes for Michael Costa with two good trials under his belt. He will be ridden by Kyle Wilson-Taylor (KWT) he could upset them here for the new stable.

Finally Realise (2) is trained in NSW by Peter Robl and has been sent to QLD after a very good run at Canberra. This weekend he will be ridden by Brad Stewart and at $41 could cause an upset in the first leg of the Quaddie.

Selections:

13 – Aidensfield
14 – Contessa
9 – Magic Ruler
1 – Bullfinch
Rough chance – (2) Finally Realise & (7) Tickler

Race 7

This is the first leg of the Treble this weekend.

The Chris Anderson trained Streaka (16) resumed with a powerful win at the Sunshine Coast. Kyle Wilson Taylor will ride, and his claim will be of good benefit in this race as well. Has a nice barrier – has never won second up but does look well placed in this grade.

Shamaton (13) from Gollan Racing is first up here. He loves these short distances – normally comes to hand quickly in his races as well. His recent trial would suggest that he could sprint well here. I think that with the genuine speed on in this race and drawn in barrier 2 with Stephanie Thornton to ride, he could just sit s few pairs back off the speed and come late and upset these other runners close to the line.

Lyrical Girl (8) is the stable mate. She will be jumping and straight into top gear – crossing the field from barrier 15 with Ryan Maloney aboard – this is one of the speedsters that will set up a genuine speed.

Aleysas Dream (8) is trained by Nick Walsh and Jim Byrne will ride this speedy mare. She has an amazing record with 21 starts – 10 wins and 8 placings. Has had a six week freshen up since her last win in dominant fashion at Mackay. I just have some concerns with barrier 17 and then the speed drawn inside her. However, maybe Byrne will elect to ride her off the speed and try and get in and finish off strong.

Dusty Tycoon (12) is another that injects some speed into the race – Leah Kilner is back from injury in the saddle for her boss Robert Heathcote – she could show up here fresh as well.

Selections:

16 – Streaka
13 – Shamaton
9 – Aleysas Dream
8 – Lyrical Girl
Rough chances – (12) Dusty Tycoon

Race 8

Go Wandji (8) is trained by Tom Dougall and Larry Cassidy will retain the ride here this weekend. Resumed at Toowoomba and flashed home late to dead heat. I think back at Doomben this gelding will be better and should get the job done again in a tough race.

Jubai Pride (16) was unlucky on her home track last weekend. She is on the quick back up here this weekend. She had no luck in the running and was held up at a vital point on entering the straight. The way she raced last weekend would suggest that the 1350 metres this weekend should suit her – Stephanie Thornton takes the ride.

Get The Idea (2) is trained by John Smerdon. Had a solid run for the new stable here six weeks ago on this track. A freshen up – a trial - and with a repeat of that effort here this weekend could cause an upset. Andrew Mallyon will ride – not without some hope here.

Gave Us Up (5) won last start for trainer Barry Baldwin with Brad Stewart aboard. They combine again here this weekend to see if he can post two wins in a row. He is not without a genuine chance. Will get a good run-in transit from barrier 3.

Snitzify (7) resumed six weeks ago and seemed to run out of fitness. He has since had a trail – maybe a rough chance here.

Selections:

8 – Go Wandji
16 – Jubai Pride
5 – Gave Us Up
2 – Get The Idea
Rough chances – (7) Snitzify & (14) Jack The Lad

Race 9

This race is a real lottery. There are several runners that could get the job done.

Tramonto (8) resumed here on 12 February and probably threw in one of his worst efforts of his career. It was reported he had respiratory issues after the race – so you can probably forgive that run. I see that Jonny Field has booked Tegan Harrison to ride him here this weekend. The winkers are going on this week as well. On his best form he would eat this lot – they have posted a rude price about this runner $15. His last start at Toowoomba was still below par – maybe now with the gear changes and third up he could get the job done here this weekend.

Montenegro Man (6) is a Kelly Schweida Racing runner who saluted at huge last time out here on 12 February. Since then, he went to Toowoomba and ran a bold race narrowly being beaten by Tumbler Ridge. I think that form will stand up in a race like this. The stable has gone for the claim with Kyle Wilson Taylor this weekend – I still think he is a serious contender.

Chris Waller Racing has another nice chance here in the last race with Starla (11). Will be ridden again by Samantha Collett. Last time out was a solid effort across the road at Eagle Farm. Back onto this softer surface maybe this five-year-old mare could return to the winner’s stalls. Again, I think she is over the odds at $16.

Rock Amore (17) is a Gollan Racing runner drawn the car park in barrier 23. Jimmy Orman will ride. He was sent out a well backed favourite last time at Eagle Farm a fortnight ago. That was second up – maybe a few things went against him that weekend. He was vetted after the race and was lame in the off foreleg. I think you should forgive that run and, back at Doomben, look for an improved performance. Just some concern where he may get in the running in this huge field from a wide barrier – however, Jimmy Orman celebrated his birthday earlier in the week and will be hungry for a win – maybe he can work some magic here in the last race.

Never No More (1) is trained by Matthew Dunn Racing. He has had a four week freshen up since a very good effort at the Sunshine Coast. He seems to race better when his races are spaced apart. Apprentice Cejay Graham will claim 3 kilograms here – she is a very good rider and will suit this gelding. Has drawn well – will race midfield and with the speed on should get the run of the race. With all the devastation that has occurred around the Northern Rivers of NSW and the Murwillumbah track particularly it would be wonderful to see a winner from this area.

This race is tough – but I think you can box my selections in a trifecta and first 4 – you could take home a motza!

Selections:

1 – Never No More
7 – Montenegro Man
11 – Starla
17 – Rock Amore
Rough chances – (3) Dr Why Not & (12) Tramonto

WINNO V FLEMO

FLEMO beat WINNO last weekend – so let’s see what happens this weekend. We had a good weekend on the tip! The battle continues this weekend with WINNO and FLEMO. I had better pay tribute to the Bronco main man in Brisbane with their lucky win against my Bulldogs last weekend. Suffice to say the Bronco supporters came out of the woodwork – as usual AFTER the match and gave me plenty! All I can say is that some lucky calls went your way – wait for four weeks and we smash you on your home turf! Be sure to check the up to date and amended tips each Saturday morning on Facebook after any track changes and scratchings where I will post our selections and any late mail!
