HUBBUB PUTS AN EARLY WIN ON THE BOARD

By Graham Potter | Saturday, April 30, 2022

Juicy odds of $10 were available about the chances of the two-year-old gelding Hubbub in a Two-Year-Old Maiden Handicap over 1000m at Toowoomba on April 30 … and those who were brave enough to take that gamble came away smiling after Hubbub saluted in only his second career start.

The son of Easy Rocking, who runs in the familiar gold with blue diamonds silks of long-time stable patron Dr Kim McCasker, had finished fourth on debut over 1100m at Toowoomba on April 14.

In that race Hubbub raced four wide in the second half of the field as the runners moved down the back stretch and he was still well out of his ground, now two wide, turning for home as his stable companion Slinky’s Star and Mishani Mistress battled for supremacy at the head of affairs.

Mishani Mistress had that battle won halfway up the straight and nobody was going to threaten her after that, but the Nolan pair did finish in the money with Slinky’s Star staying on for second and Hubbub running on steadily enough to claim fourth place.

This time Hubbub ($10) had a bit to deal, notably the barrier draw … nine out of nine … but Monty Savva put that supposed disadvantage to rest very quickly, edging her way forward in a measured fashion to settle in fourth spot three lengths off the leader.

Hubbub was up to third at the top of the home straight, where he was slightly inconvenienced by Straight Alphas ($4.20) and pushed out slightly wider on the track.

Straight Alphas and Hubbub thus began the runs together at which stage the $3 favourite Dreamer’s Gift had kicked away early, setting the target in the home straight.

The $7 chance Licensed And Ready was also making up ground quickly on the outside but, just when it looked like it might come down to a four-way grandstand finish, Savva coaxed an extra gear out of Hubbub, who gained a winning advantage over the last 150m to score by a length margin from the game Straight Alphas.

It is always good for a horse to get an early career win on the board. Two runs … one win. That will do!
