NOBODY SAW THIS ONE COMING

By Graham Potter | Wednesday, May 25, 2022

Nobody saw this one coming!

The four-year-old gelding Sawbuck put his name in the record books when he equalled the record for the longest priced winner in Britain and Ireland after landing a Maiden Hurdle contest at Punchestown at a starting price of $300.

If you went to Betfair, Sawbuck’s price was $999.

As so often is the case when a rank outsider wins, Sawbuck didn’t just sneak home or fall in … rather he powered to a clearcut victory by a full four-length margin.

The win also put the O’Dwyer family name alongside Sawbuck in the record books with the gelding being trained by Conor O’Dwyer and ridden by his son Charlie.

The result, in terms of the winner’s price, equalled that achieved by He Knows No Fear, who was the first runner in Britain and Ireland to salute at odds of $300 when he won at Leopardstown in August 2020.
