CORNISH BECOMES PART OF THE COMMANDEERING STORY AS THE GELDING LANDS ITS SEVENTH WIN

By Graham Potter | Thursday, July 14, 2022

Jasmine Cornish partnered the Ben Hull trained Commandeering to his seventh career victory in a BM70, 800m dash at Ipswich on July 14 adding another positive chapter to the extraordinary career of the Commands gelding.

Every horse has its story and Commandeering’s is a fascinating one, not least because of what the seven-year-old had to overcome to still be with us today, a back story that embraces both the resilience of the horse itself and the kindness of all of those who cared so much for Commandeering in a way that will always stand to their credit. (See links to two separate stories on that subject below).

Commandeering came into the race off a win and two runner-up finishes in his previous three starts, a record which was good enough to see him installed as second favourite at $4.

Commandeering jumped well, was urged forward by Cornish and he forged into a clear lead just inside the 600m mark.

Several runners were still snapping at his heels as Commandeering brought the field into the home straight and the best of those would keep chasing hard, but Commandeering, under a determined ride from Cornish, just kept finding and was basically always in control all the way to the line.

All seven of Commandeering’s wins have come under Ben Hull’s care and this latest win took Commandeering’s prize-money earnings past the $100 000 mark.

His overall, very proud race record now stands at those seven wins (and eight minor placings) for a total of $108 580 in stake earnings.

The win was an important one for Cornish, taking her back to within just half-a-win behind Angela Jones in the race for the Queensland Provincial Apprentice Premiership, with that finish line now very much in sight.
