CORNISH GRABS A DOUBLE AT THE GOLD COAST

By Graham Potter | Saturday, July 16, 2022

July 16 was a good day for Jasmine Cornish.

The young, title chasing apprentice landed a double at the Gold Coast when scoring aboard the Robert Heathcote trained Hoot ‘N’ Holler and the Gillian Heinrich trained My Adeline.

Hoot ‘N’ Holler, who has saluted in a QTIS Two-Year-Old Maiden Handicap over 1000m at Toowoomba in her previous start, was only seeing race action for the fourth time when she lined up for another QTIS Two-Year-Old Handicap, this time over 1100m at the Gold Coast.

Cornish wanted the lead on Hoot ‘N’ Holler ($8.50) from the break, but Hoot ‘N’ Holler was made to earn that right, initially racing in a very keen line of three horses before Cornish elected to take the sit behind the $16 outsider Chayse ‘N’ Menari who held the inside line and was intent on getting to the head of affairs.

With the challengers lining up in a packing field approaching the home turn, Cornish has Hoot ’N’ Holler swinging around the heels of Chayse ‘N’ Menari on straightening and she wasted little time in sending the daughter of Holler about her business in the home straight … but it was still a measured run, ensuring that Hoot ‘N’ Holler would kick on to the line.

And she had to do that to get the win.

First it was No Retreat ($8) who looked like she might push Hoot ‘N’ Holler all the way, but she peaked on her run late … and then it was Tarps (the $3.90 second favourite) who began to cut into Hoot ‘N’ Holler’s lead inside the last 150m, but Cornish had ridden the Heathcote trained runner to perfection and that helped put a second successive victory for Hoot ‘N’ Holler safely in the bank.

The winning margin was 0.30 lengths.

The Gillian Heinrich trained My Adeline provided Jasmine Cornish with the second leg of a double at the Gold Coast on July 16 when taking out a Class 1 Handicap over 1350m.

The five-year-old mare had won her Maiden four starts earlier over 1100m at Ipswich and had secured two placings in her subsequent three starts … the last of those coming over 1200m and she took the next step up here when moving up to the 1350m challenge.

My Adeline started as the $4.20 favourite and Cornish rode her like she was the best horse in the race … and there was no hanging about!

My Adeline surged into an immediate lead, and she had the field well and truly strung out in the early part.

Cornish then gave the daughter of All Too Hard a bit of a breather in the sweep to the home turn which allowed the bulk of the field to become more condensed, but the others were merely being conned into thinking they had a chance as Cornish was keeping My Adeline with plenty in hand.

As keen as the chasers were in the home straight … and they were stretched out right across the track trying to snap at My Adeline’s heels … Cornish was all composure in the saddle working perfectly in harmony with My Adeline, whose showed unquestioned commitment in staying on strongly to the line to claim a commendable end-to-end victory, winning by a clearcut 1.30 length margin.
