WINNO'S WINNERS: DOOMBEN, AUGUST 6, 2022

By Darren Winningham | Friday, August 5, 2022

DOOMBEN this weekend … with the track rated ‘soft’ and with the rail in the true position. There is some rain forecast on Saturday – the track may be downgraded – keep your eye on the weather!

Was lucky enough to catch up with Jimmy Orman and his delightful family at the races last weekend. A wonderful season for Orman in 2021/22 posting 78.5 wins for the season.

A new season – and maybe the unearthing of a new star? Apprentice Angela Jones started the new season with a BOOM on Wednesday at Eagle Farm with her first city double! Congratulations Angela – great effort – will she claim the apprentice title in the 2022/23 season?

NB: As these selections were made prior to final scratchings please check for any changes to track conditions and for any scratchings on the day.

Race 1

We start the day off with a sprint race over 1200 metres – only a small field.

I suppose it is ironic that the leading trainer and jockey from the 2021/22 season combine here with Spiritualised (1) in this first race. Tony Gollan and Jimmy Orman look like they will get a winner here with this colt. He was run down in the shadows of the post by the stablemate last start – looks a solid winner to start the day.

Take your pick for the placegetters!

Selections:

1 – Spiritualised
2 – Hang Five
4 – Alert State
6 – Sir Leonidas

Race 2

Distance race over 2000 metres.

Last start winner Without Thinking (4) looks well placed again. Jimmy Orman will ride. The way he finished off last start at Eagle Farm the extra distance will be no drama.

Chris Waller and Samantha Collett combine with Za Ceibas (11). He is third up and was forced to lead last time out. That is not his go – forgive that run and his best form has always been over distances – he gets up to a distance that should see him turn the tables on the last start winner Without Thinking (4).

Taaffeite (9) drops back in distance and has the assistance of the 3 kilograms for apprentice Angela Jones. Always races handy and should not be overlooked.

Selections:

11- Za Ceibas
4 – Without Thinking
9 – Taaffeite
10 – The Love Rocket

Race 3

Self Indulgent (8) is a nice type in my opinion – trained by Tony Gollan with Ryan Maloney in the saddle. She has been trialling well and with the speed in the race and drawn barrier 2 she should get the run of the race and finish over the top of them late.

The stable mate is Liza With A Zee (2) with Angela Jones to ride. Has a superb first up record and has had two recent trials to get her ready for this first up assignment.

Zain’s Girl (9) is trained in NSW by Mark Newnham. Was impressive last start at Gosford winning easily. Ben Thompson will ride. She has been up a while – maybe she is coming to an end to her preparation.

Rich Lister (5) is trained by Steven O’Dea & Matt Hoysted who had a sterling season in 2021/22. She does resume here after a 3-month spell. No recent barrier trials, but has run well fresh previously. Boris Thornton will ride.

Selections:

8 – Self Indulgent
9– Zain’s Girl
5 – Rich Lister
2 – Liza With a Zee

Race 4

A good race here over 1110 metres

Tony Gollan and Angela Jones combine with last start winner Proper Rogue (1). Has gone up sharply in the weights, but the last start win at this track was striking – he will be difficult to beat again despite the huge weight.

NSW trainers Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou have had a tremendous run-in recent months in QLD races. They bring another runner to QLD looking for more prize money – Land Of Valens (7) will resume in this race after two solid trials. Looks difficult to beat – Jimmy Orman aboard – ticks a few boxes for mine.

Miracle Day (8) was beaten last time out by Proper Rogue (1). I think that third up he could improve – Michael Cahill keeps the ride.

Dynamic Dou (17) is trained by Sears Racing – Jim Byrne will ride. Has drawn terribly in barrier 18 and will need some luck. I think that he may find a place at good odds.

Selections:

7 – Land Of Valens
1 – Proper Rogue
8 – Miracle Day
17 – Dynamic Duo

Race 5

A Class 6 race over the mile.

Steven O’Dea & Matt Hoysted have scratched Ocean Treaty (4) in recent weeks – probably due to the track surfaces. I tipped him first up at huge odds and WINNO was robbed! So, I am staying solid here hoping that the month freshen up and a recent barrier trial could see him get the job done here – Ben Thompson will ride – he must carry me as well now!

Get The Idea (2) resumed with a dominant mid-week win here for John Smerdon. Has a good second up record and does race well over the mile. Ryan Maloney will ride.

Bold Pedro (7) is trained by Garnett Taylor and Larry Cassidy will ride. Had a month off since his last run – which he won over 1500 metres. He has had a solid trial – I expect him to go well here.

Count The Coin (9) trained by Kevin Kemp and will be ridden by my NSW closet supporter Luke Tarrant! Punters will be literally counting the coin if he can win at the huge odds of $15.

Selections:

4 – Ocean Treaty
2 – Get The Idea
7 – Bold Pedro
9 – Count The Coin

Race 6

This is the first leg of the Quaddie.

Joviality (4), trained by Chris Waller, was a last start winner here a fortnight ago. Jimmy Orman has retained the ride and looks like she can post two wins in a row against this opposition.

Giannis (1) is the stablemate – has always looked like he has some ability and has raced in higher grades – if he is ever going to return to the winner’s stalls, he must show something in this race – Ben Thompson is in the saddle.

The Pines (13) was unlucky at Grafton in her last start in what I believe was a high-quality race. She probably got too far back and then sprinted well late – if she reproduced that effort here, she would win this race – Jim Byrne will ride.

Oakfield Twilight (11) won on protest here two weeks ago – keep safe.

Selections:

4 – Joviality
13 – The Pines
1 - Giannis
11 – Oakfield Twilight

Race 7

1200 metres this race – a fair few early scratchings.

Gogol (1) was superb at Grafton in the Ramornie then he was sent out as favourite at the Sunshine Coast over 1100 meters and that was not a suitable distance. Up in distance here this weekend I expect an improved effort. This runner was heavily supported at Grafton and got too far back. Ryan Maloney will ride him for the powerful Les Kelly stable based on the Gold Coast.

Manhood (15) is trained by Annabel Neasham and Sam Collett is riding - the girls are trying to get the job done here! This stallion has won his past two starts and has been working through the grades well. Look he deserves to be a $1.60 favourite in these markets, but this is his first run in Saturday grade, and I will be betting on something to beat him.

Edit (3), trained by Cody Morgan and Jimmy Orman to ride, is third up here. Has drawn terrible in barrier 16. This should not be a total disadvantage as he normally settles in the rear of the field and has a solid sprint late.

Desert Dreamer (10) could sprint well for Gollan Racing - drawn well - keep safe.

Selections:

1 – Gogol
15 – Manhood
3 – Edit
10 – Desert Dreamer

Race 8

Open race over 1200 metres.

I really think that the two Kris Lees Racing runners are well placed here. I was taken by the effort of Tavisan (9) first up at Grafton in the Kirby when he humped a massive 61.5 kilograms and powered home late to run fourth. Down in the weights, will settle just off the speed and looks ideally weighted in a race like this. A nice ride for Samantha Collett - $10 on offer as well.

Snowzone (12) is the stablemate who comes off some very good efforts in Sydney on heavy tracks. Look for a massive improvement down in the weights and on a firm surface - a nice ride for Ben Thompson.

Garibaldi (8), trained by Tony Gollan, has been racing in higher grade races without luck. The claim of three kilograms for apprentice Angela Jones brings him nicely into the race - this is a race he can win if he gets any luck in the running.
Desert Lord (3) was lost in the Ramornie at Grafton - an uncharacteristic run from a David Vandyke runner. He was excellent in the Eye Liner at Ipswich the start prior when he ran a gallant second to Holyfield. It may pay to forgive that Grafton run he does have a solid effort at this track and distance and with a freshen up may sprint well. Michael Cahill will ride him - two rides for a win and a second on him previously.

Selections:

9 – Tavisan
12 – Snowzone
8 - Garibaldi
3 – Desert Lord
Rough chances – (7) Greyworm

Race 9

The last race over 1350m – tough way to end the day.

I have gone wide here - I think there is some good value here.

The Gollan Racing representatives have solid form. Knight Mariner (12) is resuming and is very handy. Trialled well recently and has drawn well and, with Ryan Maloney in the saddle, looks ideally placed by this powerful stable.

Love Sensation (14) had no luck last time out when heavily backed and sent out favourite. Has had a freshen up since - look for an improved effort with Angela Jones in the saddle. Has drawn well in barrier 3.

My tip is Mob Buster (13) from the Kelly Schweida stables. Second up here with Jimmy Oman on board. I have one concern with the barrier 16 not being ideal. He was not at his best on the heavy track when resuming here a fortnight ago. If the track is firm this weekend look for a bold performance at around the $10. He does have a solid second up record.

Enterprise Mia (17) is from the Steven O’Dea and Matt Hoysted yards. She has won her past two starts in restricted grade. Steps up here to a weekend grade race, however, looks ideally weighted and should be competitive. Rough chance to the Robert Heathcote trained Capri of Tuffy (15) who needs a firm surface to perform at her absolute best. Taylor Marshall will ride her this weekend.

Selections:

13 – Mob Buster
12 – Knight Mariner
14 – Love Sensation
17 – Enterprise Mia
Rough chance – (15) Capri Of Tuffy
