TELL-TALE SIGNS LEAD TO A WINNER

By Graham Potter | Tuesday, August 16, 2022

The ‘beware’ sign should always appear in punter’s minds when a top jockey travels to a track for one ride.

They don’t win every time of course, but that scenario is always worth a ‘handle with care’ strategy, particularly when the price of the horse in question shortens pre-race … with both the jockey’s presence and the market support indicating a fair share of confidence in the runner getting the job done.

Such was the case with the Desleigh Forster trained Tres Redoute and Mark Du Plessis at Beaudesert in a Three-year-Old Maiden Handicap over 1100m.

Still relatively easy to back at odds of $6 due to steady support for the $3.60 favourite Louisiana Star, Tres Redoute found the lead early and the chestnut filly held a narrow advantage over Fiddler On The Roof, under a hold, all the way to the hold turn.

With the field bunching up behind him, Du Plessis waited until straightening before getting busy in the saddle and he found a willing partner in Tres Redoute who, while taking a few strides to fully get the message, lengthened her stride halfway up the straight with telling effect to pull her way to a clearcut 0.80 lengths.

That was her margin ahead of the favourite Louisiana Star, who did not have the easiest of passages before running on well enough to claim second place, without ever looking likely to reel in the winner.

Tres Redoute was first-up here after a four month layoff in what was only her second career start so she has been good enough to put that important first win on the board very early in her career and repay those who followed the pre-race signs suggesting Tres Rodoute could be the one to be with.
