GYPSY GODDESS NAMED CHAMPION 3YO FILLY AT THE AUSTRALIAN RACEHORSE OF THE YEAR AWARDS

By Graham Potter | Sunday, September 4, 2022

It’s been three months since the David Vandyke trained Gypsy Goddess won the Group 1 Queensland Oaks … and she has not raced since then … but her name was back in the spotlight on Saturday might when the highly performed daughter of Tarzino took out the Champion Three-Year-Old award for the 2021/22 racing season.

A Karaka graduate of the 2020 sale, Gypsy Goddess did not make the reserve price of $20 000 set down for her, but the sound of the cash register ringing up the prize-money she has been bringing since kicking off her career has been music to the ears of her connections since then.

Five wins from five starts in her first preparation culminated in a Group 3 victory in the Grand Prix at Eagle Farm.

After a three month break from race action, Gypsy Goddess was at it again, winning again, first-up at Eagle Farm before taking her six-win unbeaten record down south, taking a steep climb in competition to tackle the best of her sex at the highest level of the game.

A postponed meeting and unsuitable heavy going complicated her task but, while she didn’t win in Sydney, her two placed efforts in the Group 1 Vinery Stakes (in which Gypsy Goddess finished third) and in the Group 1 ATC Oaks (in which Gypsy Goddess finished second), still underlined the fact that Gypsy Goddess is a very, very good racehorse.

After some careful consideration … given that she had a testing time in Sydney … Vandyke gave Gypsy Goddess the green light to take her place in the Queensland Winter carnival, where she initially finished in third place in the Listed Gold Coast Bracelet, her warm-up run for the Queensland Oaks … which was always her target race for her Grand Final.

This the well-deserved Group 1 win would not evade her, and she crowned off her exceptional season by taking out the Queensland Oaks in telling fashion.

Now a four-year-old and still lightly raced, Gypsy Goddess currently boasts a race record of six wins and three places from her nine starts, with no less than $972 300 banked in prize-money and she now also has that Champion Three-Year-Old filly title for the 2021/22 season indelibly placed behind her name.
