RAND JAN 09 - DEALER PRINCIPAL RETURNS IN STYLE

By Scott Gooley | Monday, January 11, 2010

Randwick, January 9, 2010.
Track - Good 3. Rail - True.
Open Handicap (3yo and up) - 1300m. Time: 1-15.92.
1 Dealer Principal; 2 Imperial Applause; 3 Noble Edict.

Dealer Principal, winner of the 2008 Group 1 Rosehill Guineas, returned to racing at Randwick with an emphatic win in the AJC Members Handicap (1300m).

The five-year-old gelding had not raced since November 2008 due to a knee injury.

Despite the lengthy absence from the racetrack, Dealer Principal attracted plenty of attention in the betting ring, firming from 11-2 into 4-1.

He gave his supporters little cause for concern throughout the race.

Dealer Principal, with Rod Quinn up, enjoyed the sold pace being set by Allervite and settled comfortably mid-field, one off the fence.

Turning for home, Dealer Principal eased toward the centre of the track and cantered up to the leaders whilst still under a good hold by Quinn.

When asked for an effort at the 200m mark, Dealer Principal careered away to score, easing down, by two and half lengths from Imperial Applause, with a further half length to Noble Edict in third.

Race favourite Altered Boy (7-4) was fourth. (See Stewards Report Extract)

WINNER FEEDBACK:
Barry Smith (stable foreman for Anthony Cummings): “Very exciting. Class prevails. It was a super effort. He’s come back in great order and he’s just proved it today. It was a long road back ... very long ... but it was well worthwhile.

“Looking at today’s performance I don’t see why he can’t get back to Group 1 level. Hopefully he pulls up good and we’ll just take it one step at a time, but fingers crossed ... he should go straight back to the top.

“We didn’t have to do much with him coming into today because he is a clean-winded horse. He is lean and mean. He doesn’t take much training. You just got to keep him sound and keep him happy. There will be plenty of improvement from today’s run.”

STARTING PRICES:
Dealer Principal 5.00; Imperial Treasure 81.00; Noble Edit 10.00; Altered Boy (2.40 favourite).

STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT:
Schibello was slow to begin. App. N Berry pleaded guilty to a charge of careless riding in that passing the 1000m he permitted his mount Allervite to shift in when not clear of Subtle Cove, resulting in Subtle Cove being taken in onto Noble Edict, which was checked when crowded for room between Subtle Cove and Lockmar, which was inconvenienced. App. Berry’s permit to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Sunday, 17 January 2010 and to expire on Thursday, 28 January 2010, on which day he may ride.

A post race veterinary examination of New Edge revealed the gelding to be displaying signs of metabolic heat syndrome and a poor post race recovery. Trainer Mr J De Smet was advised that a veterinary clearance would be required for New Edge prior to its next start.

When questioned regarding his riding of Altered Boy from the 500m and in particular why he had not moved off the fence to follow the eventual winner, Dealer Principal, into the race, App. M Beadman, in the presence of stable representative Mr P Shailer, stated he had been issued with specific instructions by trainer Mr C Waller that the gelding was to be ridden back in the field on the rail and to remaining racing on the rail even in the straight.

Mr Shailer stated that Mr Waller instructed App. Beadman to ride the gelding patiently, with a view to allowing Altered Boy to unleash a finishing sprint from the 200m. He added that the gelding has had a previous tendency to run in and, for this reason, it races in a one cup blinker. Mr Shailer also added that the instructions issued today were consistent to the instructions issued to jockeys N Rawiller and J Parr at the gelding’s wins in both this campaign and its previous campaign.

App. Beadman added that, in complying with these instructions, he expected the field to fan wider on entering the straight, which would have allowed him clear running so as to have Altered Boy finish the race off in accordance with the instructions.

App. Beadman further added that approaching the 300m, when it became apparent that Testimonial remained racing on the fence, he shifted out to the outside of that runner in an endeavour to obtain clear running, however, Altered Boy was badly held up on the heels of the tiring Lockmar for some distance. Altered Boy then shifted back in and was then further held up on the heels of Testimonial and then was obliged to race in restricted room between Testimonial and Allervite for some distance until passing the 25m, where Altered Boy obtained clear running late in the race.

Mr Shailer was advised that, should the stable wish to alter those instructions, they would be expected to advise the Stewards. Stewards accepted the evidence of App. Beadman in that, had he not been bound by the instructions issued, he would have endeavoured to move away from the rail prior to the home turn in order to follow the eventual winner, Dealer Principal.
